John Wayne made 88 movies before becoming a star in 1939’s Stagecoach. From Stagecoach to 1976’s The Shootist, Wayne made another 82 movies. That is a grand total of 170 movies in his career. John Wayne was the first movie star that I became aware of as a child. I still remember the shock of watching him die in The Alamo (my older brother had told me he was going to survive…he obviously lied to me). For nearly forty years, Wayne was one of the most popular stars making movies.
John Wayne’s IMDb page shows 180 acting credits from 1926-1976. The following table only lists about half of John Wayne’s movies. Cameos, television appearances, and almost all of his B westerns from the 1930s were not included in the rankings. His remaining 94 movies are ranked by 6 different columns of sortable information.
John Wayne Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.
John Wayne Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- If movie title is a blue, then there is a John Wayne movie trailer attached to the page link
- Sort John Wayne movies by co-stars or in some cases directors
- Sort John Wayne movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
- Sort John Wayne movies by box office rank in the year of release
- Sort John Wayne movies by how the movie was received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each John Wayne movie received.
- Sort John Wayne movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
- Use the search and sort buttons to make this table very interactive.

If you do a comment….please ignore the email address and website section.
John Wayne, is the # 20 most connected actor of the 1960’s, and the # 96 most connected of the 1940’s.
Hi Mr Cogerson,
It’s been a while since I’ve participated on your site despite my continuously coming back to refer to it.
Being my favorite star I am always on John Wayne’s page and any page he is on such a the Top 100 stars. He is arguably the most consequential star of the 20th Century; a cultural icon who embodied the very best of the American male.
So here is my complaint: having 12 of his B movies included on his A List page drastically reduces JW’s averages such as on the Top 100.
Having over 160 movies under his belt wouldn’t warrant two distinct pages? A and B?
Marcel
Hey Marcel…..thanks for the return visit. Interesting point about his B movies pulling down his averages. In our All-Time Top 50 Movie Stars…Statistically Speaking book….we addressed that concern….our answer for that was to only look at the Top 25 UMR movies of that performer…when we did that John Wayne finished in the 7th spot. Another way is to look at the decade pages we created….Wayne is in 5 of those pages….those box office rankings. 1930s – 143rd, 1940s – 7th, 1950s – 10th , 1960s – 1st and 1970s – 103rd. Over the years we have done our “overall” rankings differently….not sure if there is a “right” answer…..just fun lists that use different variables. Thanks for the feedback.
Hello girls and boys,
Wayne how can I say, the first time I met him it was in Hatari, and I loved as a kid so much that film, with animals and Elsa Martinelli and à french actress, Michele Girardon and a lot of stars from all the countries…
He is simply the Duke not the king, Gable take the place for ever but he is the Great Duke.
so many good films and the three films with Dietrich are good specially seven sinners.
But I recognise one thing that the film I love so much is Rio Bravo, And this scene before the storm in the jail with Dean, Walter end Ricky when they sing together two songs ….
So great moment, the voices of Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson…together with the smile of The Duke and the harmonica of Walter…..so good….
Really one of the great western for ever….for me ….bien sur….
Bye
Pierre

Hey Dan. Thanks for the information. I actually know many of the actors on this list….but Yakima Canutt in 32 John Wayne movies…..now that is some good trivia. I will have to keep an eye out for him when watching Duke movies. Good stuff.
