I think Burton must be one of the most inventive directors of his generation. So full of imagination and vision. He leaves such a stamp that you know it’s a Burton movie and if Johnny Depp is in it, it’s definitely made by Burton!
You can see that he was heavily influenced by old classics like The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari and the old Universal horror cycle. I’ve seen most of his films and with the exception of Sweeny Todd, (far too dark for me) I’ve really enjoyed them all, especially Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands (wonderful Vincent Price) Beetlejuice (which I seen on my honeymoon) but my favourite is Ed Wood. The story of the worst director ever. A man who lacked technical ability but made up for with enthusiasm and passion. He was a real eccentric and surrounded himself with eccentrics. There’s a wonderful scene where he’s in a bar, sharing his frustrations with a fellow director, and who’s the director, none other than Orson Wells. I don’t know if it actually happened, doubtful, but it’s a great touch.
There’s another scene where he’s trying to get financial support off this millionaire, where he’s insisting on giving his son the lead role, a guy who couldn’t act if his life depended on it and of course would have to concede. The film is just a labour of love for all eccentrics.
Best of all, Martin Landau playing Bela Lugosi was outstanding, he definitely deserved an Oscar.
Also, Burton’s animation is superb. I watched Frankenweenie and thought it was fantastic. The Night Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, so Gothic. Hopefully he will produce another real classic.

2. Beetlejuice on your honeymoon? Very cool. My honeymoon movies were Must Love Dogs, The Wedding Crashers and Sky High (we both brought kids into the marriage who went on our honeymoon too).
3. I love Ed Wood too. I really think you have to be a movie person to really enjoy that one. My wife hated that movie with a passion.
4. I thought Samuel L. Jackson was ripped off when he lost the Best Supporting Actor to Landau …..but when I finally saw Ed Wood….I realized that as great as Jackson was in Pulp Fiction….Landau was even better in Ed Wood.
5. My younger kids love his animation. Frankenweenie is in heavy rotation in the house….as is The Night Before Christmas.
