Want to know which actor or actress has the most $100 million box office movies? How about finding which actor or actress has the highest percentage of $100 million box office movies. Interested in career box office earnings? Want to know how many Star Trek movies hit the magical $100 million mark? Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information and lots more.
I have fond memories of the summer of 1995. But why Cogerson? Well let me tell you, that was the summer Die Hard With A Vengeance was released. After a blockbuster opening weekend, Die Hard 3 started to fade quickly. For some unknown reason I really wanted the movie to make it to $100 million. My girlfriend at the time was doing the same thing …except she was rooting for Casper. All summer the two us seemed in competition as to which movie would reach the goal. It took all summer but Die Hard 3 (the taste of victory) finally got there. Casper made it at the end of September.
As soon as both movies reached the $100 million mark…they were immediately pulled from theaters. Today reaching the $100 million mark at the box office is not as pretigious as it once was….but studios still seem very interested in making that plateau. In 2014, Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow seemed to be hanging around in theaters unusually long…but once it reached $100 million it was quickly pulled from theaters. It seems that there is some marketing value in being able to say…”Edge of Tomorrow is Tom Cruise’s first lead role $100 million non sequel movie since War of the Worlds”.
I have been writing Ultimate Movie Rankings pages on actors/actresses and movie subjects for over six years. When I wrote my Dean Martin page I was shocked (I had dismissed his movie career) that he had so many movies box office hits. At that point I started to compare Martin to other performers and realized his total of 31 $100 million movies was one the best totals of all actors and actresses that I have written about over those 4 years. While doing the Martin comparisons I realized that I should do a page that put all of this information into one place….so here you go… my historical look at $100 million movies from 1930-2018.

The rules and logic of the movie stats found in this page
1. All box office totals are adjusted for inflation figures. But why? In an effort to accurately compare different era performers you have to use tickets sold as the common denominator. A 4 million dollar box office movie in 1940 would have been a monster hit….a 4 million dollar box office movie in 2015 would be a serious failure.
2. All box office figures are North America totals only. Oversea box office totals for any movie made before 1990 is almost impossible to find. Once again to make the comparisons equal…I was forced to only use North America box office totals.
3. Cameos, direct to DVD movies, and tv movies are not included in the totals. Also many silent films do not make the tally….this hurts some actors like Gary Cooper and Myrna Loy. John Wayne’s 70 plus Western B movies also did not make the tally.
4. Where do I get my box office numbers? For current movies….boxofficemojo.com is by the far the best place to look. Things get much more difficult for any movie made before 1980. Luckily I have 45 years of Variety magazines that provide box office information on movies made from 1935-1980. I have also been lucky enough to get my hands on the Eddie Mannix MGM ledgers, the William Schaefer Warner Brothers ledgers and the Richard B. Jewell RKO ledgers.
5. Almost everybody listed on the tables has a Cogerson Movie Score page…for a closer look at their career just check out the site index. There are three exceptions to that….as I have not done a Jerry Lewis, Samuel L. Jackson or Gary Oldman page. Jackson and Oldman were added because they are currently listed as the biggest box office winners of all-time. Lewis is a work in progress…but I had his box office numbers.
6. There are 1000s of actors and actresses that did not make this page. I am sure somebody (William Powell and Shirley Temple come to mind) is out there that could crack some of the Top Tens listed on this page. But I like to think that I have included almost all of the major stars from the last 85 years.
7. The minimum movies needed to make this page was 10. So James Cameron will have to wait until 2017 to be included here.
8. The box office numbers are through 04/03/2015. Obviously current actors make their numbers out of date very fast.
9. Final thoughts: Well if you actually made it all the way to the bottom of this page….congrats….I had fun putting this together. Things I will be looking at in the future. (1) Can Julia Roberts (16 movies) catch Judy Garland (23 movies)? (2) Anne Hathaway (12 movies) and Jennifer Lawrence (7 movies) are off to awesome starts…can they keep that pace up? (3) Are Tom Crusie (23 movies) and Eddie Murphy (23 movies) out of gas?…Murphy probably yes…Cruise…probably not. (4) I wonder which person I will find that I am greatly under appreciating their movie career? I never would have thought Dean Martin and Judy Garland were such beasts of the box office…but I was wrong then and will be wrong again…..but it is fun finding out!
So almost a year ago….we decided to update all of these pages…with (1) a new way to calculate adjusted box office (2) a new way to calculate UMR score…reviews meant more in the formula (3) including a co-star column in every page and (4) trying to include as many worldwide box office numbers as possible… Well….almost to 85% done with these updates. So in the above table….if the actor/actress’ name is a highlighted link…then there update is complete…if no link…then they are on the list of updates to do.
85% done! 85% done! 85% done!
Just fooling around. Currently the top 100 people who have starred in films that made 100 million adjusted box office appeared in 16 such movies or more. Taking some of your numbers and putting them with people in my database comes up with these others who have appeared in 16 or more 100 million adjusted films and don’t have pages on them (not that anybody would do them0. This is incomplete, they may have more, I have not used all films listed over 100 million but for a laugh you can read. First number is how many, followed by their biggest box office film and your adjusted box office number for that film. Yes Arthur Tovey and Bess Flowers have quite a few. There are people who have their biggest hit in the silent era. There are people with outrageous numbers and they probably have more. A few have a bit of trivia listed. Enjoy.

I was wondering–doesn’t the concept of a $100 million dollar movie somewhat discriminate against older stars as the potential market is so much smaller due to the smaller population. The census had the population at about 120 million in 1930. It is 330 million today. I would think reaching $100 million became easier decade by decade. Where am I going wrong?
I noticed you occasionally list top ten or top 20 placement. I think this is much better as the #5 movie is the #5 movie in 1930 or 1960 or 1990.
Dean Martin and Judy Garland as box office monsters–Years ago I found a list of top ticket sellers for the 20th century & also broken down by decades. Judy Garland was the top female ticket seller of the 1940’s (behind Crosby & Hope). It is not surprising to me that she did so well as besides her own hits, she had cameos in the big Technicolor MGM all-star deals like Thousands Cheer, Ziegfeld Follies, Till the Clouds Roll By, and Words and Music. Martin was in the top ten in both the 1950’s (teamed with Jerry) and the 1960’s. He was the #17 ticket seller of the century overall. Yes, I didn’t realize how successful he was at the box office until I saw those figures. He finished ahead of Fonda, Newman, Lancaster, etc.
Hey John….thanks for a great comment. It is true that the population is bigger….but…..movie attendance is about a third of what it was during the 1930s and 1940s…back in it’s heyday 95 million people a week were going to the movies….now that number is about 20 million a week. My adjusted grosses are based on tickets sold….so actually it was easier to reach $100 million in adjusted back then versus today. If you sort this table by most $100 million hits…the top 20 are all classic stars…will continue y
Fair enough and you are correct. But it hit at first glance that the pre-war movies seemed to do less well at the box office. Fortunately, you printed a year by year list of $100 & $200 million movies that I found gophering through your fantastic research. I added them up by decade and–
$100 million
1930’s—107
1940;s—422
1950’s—224
1960’s—154
$200 million
1930’s—19
1940’s—78
1950’s—48
1960’s—60
So I was wrong about the population but right in a way, due I think to the Depression. I still think stars of the thirties (Temple and Harlow) or stars whose careers peaked in the thirties (Gable, Garbo, Powell, Rogers, Loy, Cagney, Colman) to be a touch undervalued as to their impact. That Gable does so well in your lists points, I think, to his exceptional stature at the box office.
Hey John …I agree the early 1930s and before it seems pretty hard to find a $100 million dollar movies. Glad you found that page…earlier this year…we made a big decision to change the way we took rentals to gross to adjusted gross….and that page was done to pretty much prove we needed to change our formula. We actually have not updated all the stars with the new stats. This page is actually on list of pages done and the ones needed to do. If the name in the page is link…then the updated stats have been done for the actor/actress.
I think you will see that many of the stars you mentioned will see some dramatic improvements in their box office grosses….let’s see…I have done updates on Temple (20 $100 million hits), Harlow (16 $100 million hits – out of 21) and Cagney (24 $100 million hits) and Gable. I have not updated Loy, Powell, Rogers and Colman…I bet their numbers will be more in line with what you are thinking when I update their pages. Speaking of Loy….I bet her $100 million hits will go from 16 to 30 or more when I get her update done..which her update has been on the deck circle for awhile now.
Thanks for the detailed comment….it is greatly appreciated.
Hey John-Old Movie Fan.
1. Sorry my return comments are all over the place…I was literally waiting to get on a plane when I started my return comment….when I got called to get on the plan.
2. If you sort this table by most $100 million hits…the top 20 are all classic stars.
3. If you sort by % of $100 million hits…once again the classic stars own the Top 10….with Tom Cruise, Will Smith and Eddie Murphy cracking the Top 25.
4. I try and include the yearly box office rankings on every page…..my first choice is to use Variety’s Top Grosser rankings….if those are not available…I do the rankings based on database….which causes a little discrepancy ….but they are close.
5. So far we have written almost 500 movie pages…Dean Martin and Judy Garland both shocked us when we saw how many successful movies they had appeared in….Garland has more $100 million hits than all other actresses besides Joan Crawford…and her % of movies to hits is the best one out there.. (using a mininum of 20 movies)…meanwhile the thought that popped into my mind when I did Dino….was…”He was a beast at the box office”….so I agree with your comment on them.
6. Glad you commented….if you see a subject you are interested in us writting about….just drop a note on the request line…and we will be sure to get one done.
Well, I was impressed with Garland also when I came across a list of the top ticket-sellers of the 20th century. She was the 6th female star overall, but all the others ahead of her had much longer careers and made many more movies. Considering that her movie career more or less went off the rails when she was only 28 in 1950, one can speculate that had she stayed healthy and active through the fifties and sixties, she would be very close or right at the top.
Hey John….I was shocked when I did her page….almost every movie was a box office smash…not just a hit….but a smash. If your sort this table by actress and career box office she is currently in 5th place….but since some are updated and others are not….thinking she will stay in 5th place…but I she, her staying in the Top 10…thought I know Loy will definetly pass her…..as well as Stanwyck and possible Ginger Rogers. But her movie total is easily the smallest…which makes her overall ranking even more impressive. Thanks for the return visit and the comment.
Bing is No. 7 in the Box Office stats, Bruce, but he’s No. 1 in my book.
I understand….lol. Since HubPages…I have now written almost 450 of these pages…..so 7th out of 450 is pretty incredible. Samuel L. Jackson (haven’t updated that yet) passed Bing this weekend with the new Tarzan movie….but 8th place is still stellar. Plus Bing carried his movies while SLJ is more of a supporting player.
The truth is, Bruce, that I gave up going to movies after watching three popular films in 2005 because I couldn’t stand the ultra-fast scene changes and all the gimmicks directors use these days. I’ll take the movies of the ’30s and ’40s any day. I wonder how many movies Sam Jackson made — Bing was in some five dozen movies (and starred in most of them.)
Bing starred in 55…..The Legend of Tarzan is Jackson’s 93rd movie…..so pretty much close to double Bing’s output….an average Bing movie grossed $156.60 million (adjusted) to Jackson’s $94.50 million (adjusted).
It’s a big adjustment, Bruce. In 1939 it cost me $0.12 to see a movie (children’s price.) That would be at the Terrace Theater “The Itch” in Yonkers.
Very cool….that you remember that. 12 cents buys nothing now.
Looks like Joan trumps Bette again…La Crawford with the most $100 Million Movies for an actress. More reinforcement she was the greatest Female Movie Star of all time!
Hey Roaring 20s Rule….yep Joan topped Bette in that category. I have not finished updating all the pages….but pretty sure Joan will end up pretty high on that list. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
