  1. (Lupino whistles in admiration): What an impressive list! As Flora said, much too long for tally counts. Still, what I find amazing (among other things) is that the almost totally forgotten Luise Rainer manages to have one movie within the top 5 (I know, it’s Myrna’s movie…BUT Luise got the Oscar!), two within the top 20 and three within the top 50…and then it was all over. Would have liked my beloved gorilla higher up the ladder, but 8 out of 696 isn’t too bad either. The “Divine” Garbo is doing quite well thanks to her popularity outside the states- but Pierre will be disappointed by the omission of Dietrich. But then, we all know about the infamous “Paramount Curse” 😉

    1. Your Gorilla is not 8th….it is 592nd…..as The Gorilla sets right behind Murder Will Out and right ahead of The Case of the Velvet Claws….lol. Three movies I have never heard off….but King Kong is one I have heard. Rainer was the oldest living Oscar winner for a very long time…..she just passed a few years ago….I actually had some contact with her Twitter feed….I think it was her helpers….but still the lady had a Twitter account.

Yes you will not see many Paramount movies on this page. While looking at Robert Woolsey’s IMDb page…I was amazed that almost all of his movies were already in our database….one of the few exceptions was 1933’s So This Is Africa….the first piece of trivia was….”This was the only film Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey made for Columbia Pictures. All their other features were for RKO Radio Pictures.”….so Columbia is also in that Curse Group.

      Good feedback as always.

      1. MY Gorilla is bigger than your Gorilla and that is why MY Gorilla is within the top ten while yours is combing far away jungles for bananas and stuff 🙂
Great info on Miss Rainer, she was very virile until her fall at the age of 102, maybe it was not just her helpers who twittered with you. I think she still holds the record for the longest life span among Oscar winning actors and actresses (104 years!), and wishing no harm to Miss de Havilland, I have a feeling that she is determined to snatch that record away from my “local girl done good”.

        1. Hey Lupino….funny comment about Your Gorilla and My Gorilla….I think it is safe to say that King Kong is slightly more known than The Gorilla…..though I have seen Steve mention The Gorilla numerous times over the years…lol.

As for Olivia de Havilland….next year will be the 80th anniversary of Gone With The Wind…she has joked that she looks forward to that event….maybe the 90th anniversary in 2029 is within her reach too.

  2. Hi, Bruce. I made a comment on Top Grossing Movies of 1930 and I made an error which I have asked you to fix in a reply I made to my own comment. I ran out of time to edit it.

This is a massive list and like Steve said, it is too large to do a tally count. I have already made a tally count on all the yearly reviews from the 1930s. Love the photo up at the top. Great work Bruce.

    1. Hey Flora….no problem without having a tally count….over the last few months….we have gotten some requests to put all the worldwide grossers in our database in one page…..this was in response to those comments. A massive list that is not exactly easy to navigate….but the information is here….seems lots of people like to do research on the stats we have come up with over the years.

  3. Wow impressive work Bruce, where else on the internet would you find a list like this? Nowhere else. Kudos to Team Cogerson.

Gone With the Wind was the easy winner here, but I presume the grosses from all the various reissues were added in as well?

What no King Kong? I read somewhere once that King Kong was the biggest hit of the 1930s until Snow White and Gone With the Wind came along, an exaggeration but it was a big hit.

Snow White is missing too, should be up there in 2nd place methinks.

Too many films on the chart for a tally. But I have them counted on the yearly pages.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…gotta admit….this collection of worldwide grosses is pretty impressive….shocked that we were able to find this many movies with a worldwide gross. As for King Kong…..it is sitting in 8th place with $554 million. No you did not miss it…..for some unknown reason I had not included Snow White (2nd place) or King Kong….even though I had rentals for their first release.

Going to make this a dynamic table…..but I need the expertise of WoC to help export the information. Thanks as always for the feedback.

Using the handy edit to amend this comment….actually thinking about it….King Kong and Snow White have been in the database for a very long time…..originally there was no thought to include worldwide grosses…I had no idea these pages would become international….so I guess that means I need to go back and get some of these classic movies and include their worldwide grosses. Almost 700 movies is still pretty impressive.

      1. It’s an incredible list amigo, well done.

Glad Snow White and Kong are now on the chart and looking very healthy indeed, wow Kong in 8th place, a huge moneyspinner for RKO!

        1. Both of the ones you noticed missing were “monster hits”…..it is making me look at my ledger notebooks and think….”how many other movies did I miss over the years?”

Off topic….finally watched one of the missing Michael Caine movies that I had not seen….as I watched The Wrong Box today…..goodness he was a young pup…..a silly movie but a very memorable cast….from Caine to Ralph Richardson to John Mills to Dudley Moore to Peter Cook to Peter Sellers….Sellers was almost hard to recognize…and he had little make up on.

          1. Just saw this comment and noticed that you finally saw The Wrong Box and enjoyed it. It is one of my favourite Michael Caine movies and comedies in general.

          2. Hey Flora….I was downloading Blake Edwards trailers when I stumbled across The Wrong Box….and since it was one of the few Caine movies that I had not seen….I gave it a chance. Caine looks so young in the movie. I liked Ralph Richardson’s character…and fear I might be like him…especially if I get to talking about movies….lol. Thanks for the mini-review….it is appreciated.

  4. This is really cool! Given that it’s just regular text though, won’t you run in to the same problem of this never updating like the domestic data does on the individual year pages?

      1. Hey Bobby….I need WoC’s help to do this….hopefully this weekend I can get a few minutes of her time.

    1. Hey Bobby….that would indeed be the problem…..if this page gets some traffic…I will probably delete the lists in each year…and share the link for the entire decade.

      1. I don’t know. An entire decade of global and domestic data (so, over a thousand movies?) sounds like a lot for users to sift through. The yearly pages still have value, as seen by how some of your other regulars are able to engage with the yearly pages and make lists of which ones they’ve seen, while similar users give up and don’t bother with even a list this long. I admit, the yearly pages would probably have even more value if the intro few paragraphs were less cookie-cutter and talked more about the state of movies or the industry that year.

I’m also admittedly assuming that one of the reasons the global data isn’t just in the same table as the yearly domestic data is because you’re rather limited in how many columns you can display because of the limited horizontal real estate you have. If you were to delete the yearly pages, all of the data that is on there would have to go somewhere, and merging it here would run in to the same limited columns problem. If I’m wrong about it being a space issue, then I’d highly encourage merging that data in to the same table anyway.

        1. Hey Bobby…..it was a request…..using the Control F makes finding a particular movie easier to find. Sadly we are limited in the columns on the main table….or else they would be included there. I basically view this has a research tool and nothing more than that…I know I would have been thrilled beyond belief if I found a table like this 7 years ago.

The “cookie cutter” opening paragraphs are the ones that include all the key words that google likes to see….on the regular page….the first paragraph is jammed with key words and then the rest of the page is specific to that thespian or movie maker. A necessary evil to keep the google searches going.

By the time I am done collecting and typing these numbers into the database…..the thought of doing an essay on that year is not too appealing….does it have merit….of course…..just limited time….makes doing the pages the same way the most productive…plus another key thing is to have the pages look the same…cookie cutter….most of our pages are set up the same way.

You had a comment a few weeks ago about putting the entire database on the website…..WoC has looked into doing that…but currently it is not possible…..or at least not financially possible….apparently the size of the database is a concern for the website provider.

Plus…there is the “rental” disclosure problem. During our research we had….ok I had to sign lots of paperwork about the rules and usage of the ledgers…before going into the archives……that is one of the reasons….you will rarely see me mention rentals…I might share the estimated actual gross…and the formula I use…..which would allow you to calculate the rental number…..but having the rental numbers on our website will not be happening anytime soon.

We appreciate your thoughts…good suggestions…which helps us try and make this the best possible website. Good feedback.

          1. Ah ok, great. In that case, I’m a perfect use case since I use this site and it’s data for research.

As far as putting the entire database on the website, that’s only sort of what I said. I said give me a more dynamic way to make a query to your database. Very similar to the Report Builder that The-Numbers website has, though tweaked to fit what data you have available more. Basically, just take whatever API calls are being made on the individual pages, and give the users a way to construct those API calls for themselves.

          2. Hey Bobby…just checked out The Numbers Report Builder….not sure how we can do that…but we will check it out…..I will let my tech support read your comment tomorrow and see if she knows any tricks in dealing with AFI…..and if we can do it without having another price increase by our website provider. Good stuff.

          3. AFI? Do you mean API? Either way, I did what investigation I could digging through the requests I can see come through the page in the dev console. I was REALLY confused at first (like I guess wdt_var1 is some sort of static ID to go get a manually pre-built query?), but I think I’ve figured out that it’s the wpDataTables plugin? Looks the same.

Assuming it is wpDataTables, then I haven’t worked with anything related to WordPress before, but based on their documentation I think I understand your limitations. That page on “advanced filtering” teased me, since I wrongly assumed that be an “advanced SEARCH” feature, which would be perfect, but no, sadly only filtering on the table that’s already there on the page, which I see you have on.

Hmm. Maybe the dynamic queries with placeholders? Looks like it limits you to only three dynamic variables. That’s annoying. If that does work I’d just request that “year” be one of the three. Do you have the table data export tools turned on? That’d be pretty sweet.

As I said before, I haven’t worked with these tools before, so all of this is spit-balling, and I trust that your tech person knows what the capabilities are of your tools with your data better.

    2. Bobby… i really like the comments, stuff I can work with. Lets take the tech stuff elsewhere and let the movie comments dominate here. Contact me @debbie3416 on twitter.

  5. Simply wonderful !! It’s such an amazing work !! Thank you so much ! Hope you’ll do it for the 40’s 50’s 60’s 70’s 80’s !

    1. Hey Max….that is the plan….and then a page that lists the Top 200 Adjusted Worldwide Grossers….at least the Top 200 in my database….thanks for stopping by and commenting.
