1930 Top Grossing Movies

This movie page looks at 1930 Top Box Office Movies.  Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1930 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1930 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1930.  Obviously many movies made in 1929 earned box office dollars in 1930.  On the other side many movies made in 1930 made money in 1931 and later.  This page looks at 130 1930 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1930 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

Hell’s Angels was the biggest box office hit of the year

  1. Hello,
    Sorry may be 10 but in the mean time i am not sure;
    The blue Angel of course but only German version, Anna Christie but i stopped it after 10 minutes and of course The Marx Brothers;
FOR ME 1930 is a frontier between The Muet and the speaking, something change, new Stars , news Directors ,Terrible Has Been for some stars and after the break down of 1929 for money and invest, i am not sure it was an easy moment but what i am sure that movie was not expensive at all and it was two hours of dreams with a film….
    So that simply Hollywood
    See you
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre….thanks for checking out our 1930 movie page. 10 tops me…..as I have only seen 7 of these movies. Good points about that time period in the History of Hollywood. Awesome feedback as always.

  2. I’ve seen just 5 movies from the 130 films listed on the chart – All Quiet on the Western Front, Animal Crackers, Hells Angels, The Big Trail and The Unholy Three.

Looking at my database – I have 19 films from 1930 in my movie collection, I haven’t watched them all. They are –

    Abraham Lincoln
All Quiet on the Western Front
    Animal Crackers
    Anna Christie
    Bat Whispers ,The
    Big Trail ,The
    Dawn Patrol ,The
    Doughboys
    Feet First
    Follow Thru
    Free and Easy
    Hells Angels
    Just Imagine
    King of Jazz
    Madam Satan
    Morocco
    Murder
    Unholy Three ,The
    zz-Germany – Blue Angel ,The

From that list I’ve also seen Feet First, Just Imagine, Murder (early Hitchcock) and The Bat Whispers.

Looking at the adjusted worldwide grosses chart – Hells Angels was a massive hit, I’ve never heard of Check and Double Check.

Excellent work as always Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the visit, the tally and the comment.
      2. So you have seen 5…..I have seen 7…..6 of the Top 10…..and then The Big Trail with a young John Wayne.
      3. Check and Double Check starred the famous radio voices Amos and Andy…..they were huge back then…..if that should was on today….it would last about 15 minutes before the boycotts would start.
      4. So you have 19 of these movies in your collection….I am at 0….though there is Hitchcock collection around that might include Murder.
      5. Surprisingly box office was not the biggest issue in putting this page together….instead it was finding enough reviews for many of these movies…did not see that happening….great feedback as always.

    2. I have seen 15 movies from 1930’s list which I mention in my original comment below, but I noticed on your list of films you own that Murder by Hitchcock is from 1930 as well – which I have also seen. It is a great early Hitchcock film.

      1. Hey Flora and Steve….those early English Hitchcock movies are ones I have wanted to include for a very long time….but sadly still have not figured out a way to do it. I will have to check out Hitch DVD collection to see if Murder is one of the movies in that collection.

  3. In going through this list of 1930 movies, I cannot be sure about all of the titles I may have seen. Some titles sounded familiar, but unless I was positive I have seen it, I did not write it down.

I have seen only 15 movies from 1930. That’s right. Fifteen movies only. Five of those movies are from the top 10. There my percentage drops off. Therefore, I will answer this page a little differently than the other yearly reviews.

The highest ranking film I have seen is All Quiet on the Western Front.

The highest ranking film I have NOT seen is Whoopie.

The lowest ranking film I have seen is Free and Easy.

My brief thoughts on the 15 Movies I have seen: thank Robert Montgomery for many

All Quiet on the Western Front – best picture winner it is a powerful anti-war film showing pathos to both sides of WWI

The Big House – a taut jail break drama with a screenplay written by a woman it shows the harshness of prison life; love Montgomery

The Blue Angel – wonderful early Marlene Dietrich where you can already tell she would be a big star

The Divorcee – Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery is one of my favourite screen teams.

Tom Sawyer – I saw this once years ago

Min and Bill – Dressler and Beery surprise as a strong screen couple

Raffles – I love the gentleman thief. I watched the remake too

Their Own Desire – Shearer and Montgomery

Romance – Greta Garbo is mesmerizing as a singer who falls in love

The Devil to Pay – I became a Ronald Colman fan last summer when TCM had him as a Star of the Month. I found more films of his online.

The Silver Horde – A little known Joel McCrea film about fishing canneries and rival businessmen

Doorway to Hell – You can never go wrong with Cagney.

Doughboys – Keaton in uniform is wonderful

Free and Easy – two favourites of mine Robert Montgomery and Buster Keaton.

    Wow. What a tiny total.

    1. WHOOPS! I screwed up. I got FAST AND LOOSE mixed up with FREE AND EASY. FAST and LOOSE is a Carole Lombard comedy. FREE AND EASY is Montgomery and Keaton.

PLEASE WILL YOU EDIT MY COMMENT FOR FAST AND LOOSE TO READ “A FUN CAROLE LOMBARD COMEDY.

    2. Hey Flora….thanks for the mini-reviews of the 15 that you have seen. Not sure many people realize that Robert Montgomery had such an amazing 1930. 7 movies and most were hits including the massive hit The Big House. When I attached that trailer….I noticed that Montgomery looked very young. Your 15 tops the combined total of 12 that Steve I reached. Of the ones you have seen…I have only seen The Divorcee, All Quiet on the Western Front and Blue Angel.

I would not worry too much about only seeing 15 of these movies…..heck I might have only heard of 15 of them….granted these movies are now 88 years old. Looking at my database….t looks like I have about 90 movies from 1929…..but can’t see going any further back than that….looking forward to marching to 1980 with the yearly reviews….somehow…..1976 is already done…I wonder how that happened…lol. Thanks for the feedback.

    3. Flora, don’t worry. I call myself a classic movie buff and I am only certain about EIGHT films! Many sounded familiar at first, but I pretty soon realized that I did indeed see Kismet- but it was the Colman/Dietrich Technicolor extravaganza more than a decade later. The Furies? I guess I was thinking about Stanwyck and Houston 20 years later. Same goes for No No Nanette, Sunny, Moby Dick and some :O(
Of the few films I have definitely seen, my favorites are All Quiet on the Western Front, The Blue Angel (though I still must say that I prefer the german original Der blaue Engel), The Big House, Ladies of Leisure (Stanwyck and Capra- a great combo!) and Garbo’s Anna Christie. A pretty short list which did surprise me…
Still, a great chart from Bruce, with hopefully so much left to discover for future viewing!

      1. Hey Lupino
        1. Gotta admit..these early 1930s movie review pages have been more like a chore than a fun thing to do….some many movies and movie stars that I am unaware of…..but…now I know the Wheeler and Woolsey comedy team……the short but bright career of Winnie Lightner…..and the struggles of Rin Tin Tin….three movies with a combined box office total of $46.60 million in 1930.
        2. Tally count…..Flora 14 (or is it still 15?) Lupino 8, Cogerson 7 and Steve 5.
        3. I thought some of the same thing when I same the titles like The Furies and Kismet….I think Kismet got remade three or four times.
        4. Glad you liked the chart…..but we will be fast forwarding 35 years for the next set of movies…..ones that I am much more aware of….as always…thanks for the feedback.

        1. Bruce, although I know most of the stars, I think it’s easier to find their more contemporary outings…like Winnie Lightner’s box office smash of 1932, Play Girl or Connie Bennett’s Topper from 1937 lol.

          1. Funny comment….I just realized I short changed Winnie Lightner…..as I forgot to go back and include her 3rd 1930 movie….She Couldn’t Say No earned $81 million…not enough to pass Garbo….but needed to be in the Top Stars anyway…will not show up until the entire database gets updated later today.

Connie had a good 1930….maybe it is time to do a UMR page.on her….good feedback as always.

          2. Hello Bruce,
A very good idea for a Constance Bennett s page because i think she is one of the last classical actress of the 30 who is not on UMR.
            Thanks
            Pierre

    1. Hey Dan…..good catch….The Indians Are Coming was a late addition…..so I guess when I saw a Tim name I went with Mr. Holt versus Mr. McCoy…….thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    2. Hey Dan
      1. Epic list as always.
      2. Looks like I have about 60% of these movies on the table….so your 109 destroys everybody in the tally contest…..heck….combined the four of us only reach 32 movies.
      3. Watching all the Best Picture Winners sounds like a cool experience….I have seen most of them….with only two or three escaping me…..I know Calvacade is one of those movies.
      4. Interesting trivia about the television debuts of All Quiet on the Western Front and Rebecca.
      5. I get parts of All Quiet on the Western Front and Goodbye Mr. Chips mixed up….the school parts of course.
      6. Being a collector of useless trivia…I always appreciate your thoughts and memories of movies….keep em’ coming…lol.

  4. These are the 117 1930 films I have seen since December 1992 through December 2017. I saw All Quiet on the Western Front circa 1979 at the Regency Theater when they played all the Oscar winners for best picture of the year. Key is film, studio, stars if I listed, date seen and source whether it be tape, DVD or TV channel.

Useless trivia, on October 12, 1958 WCBS (local) New York debuted All Quiet on the Western Front. On the same night WNBC local debuted 1940’s Rebecca opposite it. This is the only time in New York broadcasting history that 2 films that won best picture of the year debuted on TV on the same day.
