  1. Hello Bruce , you did a nice job again !
I have a question about the worldwide gross of some movies, I was wondering if you or somebody else had any information…
Among the films I propose to you, which version have been more successful worldwide :

    1) Treasure Island 1934 vs Treasure Island 1950
    2) The Hunchback Of Notre Dame 1939 vs The Hunchback Of Notre Dame 1956
    3) The Three Musketeers 1948 vs 1973 version vs 1993 version
    4) Knights Of The Round Table vs Excalibur vs First Knight
    5) The Mark Of Zorro 1940 vs Zorro 1975

    Thanks !

    1. … I also forgot Frankenstein 1931 vs 1994 version … Which one was the most successful worldwide according to you ?

      1. Hey Karen…..we sadly do not have worldwide grosses for the 1931 Frankenstein……but with $232 million in adjusted domestic gross….it only trails 1994 Frankenstein by 20 million when looking at adjusted worldwide gross..what has a adjusted worldwide gross of $252 million. Pretty sure the original Frankenstein did that much overseas. Sorry that I do not have better numbers on that classic scene.

    2. Hey Karen…sadly I do not have many worldwide box office totals on these movies….here is what I have.
1934 Treasure Island….$259.32 million in adjusted worldwide gross
1950 Treasure Island….$224.03 million in adjusted worldwide gross

1948 Three Musketeers ….$508.04 million in adjusted worldwide gross

1953 Knights of the Round Table….$375.40 million in adjusted worldwide gross
1995 First Knight…………..$269.28 million in adjusted worldwide gross

      Hope this helps.

  2. I have seen 58 out of 133 movies from 1934.

Up to and until the top 50, I had seen most of them films with 43 out of 50, then I dropped off a bit.

The highest rated film I have seen is It Happened One Night at Number 1.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Cleopatra at Number 2. I believe that is the first time in these yearly pages that the highest ranked film I have missed has been in the top 5.

The lowest rated film I have seen is The Man With Two Faces at 119.

    My Top Ten Favourites are:

    It Happened One Night
    The Thin Man
    The Gay Divorcee
    Riptide
    Twentieth Century
    The Scarlet Pimpernel
    The Count of Monte Cristo
    The Merry Widow
    Dames
    Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Thanks for your thoughts on our 1934 movie page.
      2. 58 is only behind Dan….and well ahead of Steve and me.
      3. 43 of the Top 50 is very impressive.
      4. I have not seen Cleopatra either.
      5. Of your Top 10……I have seen It Happened One Night, Thin Man, 20th Century and The Gay Divorcee….and I liked them all.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. I’ve seen 15 of the 133 films listed on the chart. And looking at my datafiles I have 33 films from 1934 in my movie collection, I’ve seen 20 of those.

Favorites from both lists include – The Black Cat, It Happened One Night, Cleopatra, The Gay Divorcee, Dames, Tarzan and his Mate, Treasure Island, Viva Villa, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Charlie Chan in London and The Thin Man.

I haven’t seen Bright Eyes, which looks like the biggest hit of 1934, bigger than Cleopatra and It Happened One Night. Seems 1930s audiences were completely entranced by talented tot Shirley Temple.

Nicely done Bruce. Keep em coming!

    Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..thanks for the feedback. I did not even reach double digits on this page…..as my total is 8. So you almost double my total. Of my 8….6 you have listed as your favorites. 1934 was the year Shirley took off….and she would maintain that high status for the rest of the decade. Thanks for the nice words and the vote up.

  4. In 1979 I started going on a regular basis to the Regency revival house. They started off with a series of films starring lady comedians. The first double bill I saw included Twentieth Century (1934) with Carole Lombard and John Barrymore. Also in that series and from 1934 I saw It Happened One Night. In my kid days I had seen both 1934’s Laurel and Hardy features Babes in Toyland and Sons of the Desert along with W.C. Field’s It’s a Gift.

Here are the 169 1934 films I have seen since December 1992 when I saw film 8000 that I had viewed through the end of 2017. Key is film, studio, stars if I wrote down, date seen and source (TV channel, videotape or DVD).

    1. Hey Dan…..very cool. That is a lot of 1934 movies. My total is almost nothing compared to your massive list. Thanks for sharing it on our 1934 page. Truly impressive.

  5. Still have some things to add to this page…..like trailers and worldwide grosses on 52 movies….but I have to go to work.
