1937 Top Box Office Movies

Myrna Loy’s two 1937 movies grossed almost $300 million in adjusted box office

This movie page looks at 1937 Top Box Office Movies Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1937 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1937 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1937.  Obviously many movies made in 1936 earned box office dollars in 1937.  On the other side many movies made in 1937 made money in 1938 and later.  This page will looks at 132 1937 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1937 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

Snow White is the top grossing movie of 1937…but….it took many re-releases over many decades to end up with close to a billion in adjusted domestic gross

Our UMR Top 50 of 1937

1937 Top Box Office Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1937 Top Box Office Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.  If you want to see the 3 Paul Muni movies on the table…just type in his name in the search box and up they will come
  • Sort 1937 Top Box Office Movies by domestic actual box office grosses (in millions)
  • Sort 1937 Top Box Office Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort 1937 Top Box Office Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each 1937 Top Box Office Movies received.
  • Sort 1937 Top Box Office Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Hey Bruce,

thanks for another box office year! Haven’t posted for a few days (since I checked out the 2 chosen ones Loy and Crawford), work is merciless currently and I spend enough time at the computer there 😉 ..but a week off lies just around the corner!

Of the above listed films, I’ve seen 49- not enough for the Gold medal but quite decend I think. One of my top 3 films ever was released in ’37, so The Good Earth has to be my favorite movie of the year. Yet, there are so many others that are close runner-ups: Lost Horizon, Stella Dallas, The Awful Truth, the movie that introduced me to Sylvia Sidney, Dead End, her other 1937’s outing You only live once, Easy Living, Stage Door and Robert Montgomery’s departure from his usually sympathic characters in Night must fall. Marlene Dietrich got a lot of money for the british made Knight without Armor, and while it was another flop at US box offices, I enjoy this movie very much. Robert Donat was great, Marlene (sometimes too) beautiful and competent in a role that was a departure from her von Sternberg movies. I’m sure there are other films of the year that would deserve to be singled out, but I will leave it at this.

    1. Hey Lupino…..no problem about not posting for a few days….heck I have had a hard time making time for UMR.com….lol. 49 is good enough for 2nd place….and easily beats my total. I enjoyed The Good Earth as well….Paul Muni is outstanding in that one. The Awful Truth is my favorite of the year. Mmmm….I will have to check out Night Must Fall. Good feedback…thanks for the comment, the visit and the tally count. 🙂

  2. Cogerson

thanks for all the information. I have seen 37 of these films, heavily tilted toward the ones with a higher UMR or critic ratings. My reaction is surprise that The Hurricane does so poorly as I found it one of the better 1930’s John Ford movies with terrific special effects. The UMR system drops Snow White to #4, but I think it is obviously the movie of the year of those released in 1937. It was simply not eligible for most Academy Awards, but did win a special one. I personally think it should have won the best picture Oscar, but with human actors so prominent in the Academy, it was never in the cards for a movie with animated characters to come out on top.
*If one wanted to get Snow White to the top in your system, one could give it credit for eight Oscars, the regular sized special Oscar along with the seven small “dwarf” Oscars which Shirley Temple presented at the ceremony to Walt Disney.

    1. Hey John….thanks for checking out this year in review. If Snow White would have gotten those 8 Oscars in would indeed have been the top ranked UMR movie of the year….but since it was pretty much ignored by the Oscar voters….it lost almost all of the possible points in that category.

As for The Hurricane….it finished in the Top 30 in lots of the categories….I have not seen it…so I will go with your thinking on it being a quality movie….but in fairness…when people mention great John Ford movies….I think it takes a very long time before they get to The Hurricane. I need to track that one down. Glad your 37 movies watched were near the top of my two main ways to rank movies….to me it tells me our system is good at the getting the cream to rise.

      Thanks for the feedback.

  3. Hello Bruce.
I think it’s great that you’ve been doing yearly film box office pages.
I’m on the run or I’d say more. I appreciate what you been doing.
I’m glad James Stewart won the actors tournament. Stewart has always been in my top ten of greatest male film stars.

    1. Hey Lyle….glad you like these pages….pretty sure 1943, 1944 and 1945 ones are coming soon. Glad you like that Stewart won our Actors tournament…..our Actress tourney is almost now…with Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine being our Final Four. 🙂

    1. Hey Dan….I imagine stopping the tracking of the movies you watched was a tough decision after collecting so much data.

I am having the same issue with Letterboxd.com. After reviewing over 2000 movies I have started having time issues with doing reviews. I am currently 30 movies behind and part of me wants to stop the reviews while the other part is saying keep going.

Still this is a massive amount of 1937 movies watched. Kudos to you for all of your record keeping. Thanks for sharing all of this information.

      1. I didn’t stop logging the movies, just listing the stars. When I first put everything on a computer years ago I listed the top 2 stars, till maybe 2009. I stopped because one book I used basically fell apart or the internet would freeze up. I put most of the actors up for numerous years (my years viewing) all at one time then just didn’t update.

  5. Hi, Bruce.

I have seen only 39 movies of 1937 movies listed here.

The highest rated film I have seen is Snow White and the seven Dwarfs.

The lowest rated film I’ve seen is Quality Street.

Favourites movies from this year include, in no order:

    Night Must Fall
    Personal Property
    The Awful Truth
    In Old Chicago
    The Last of Mrs. Cheyney
    The Prisoner of Zenda
    The Hurricane
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    Captains Courageous
    Dead End

There are some Robert Montgomery titles on this list that I have not seen. I will have to look for them.

    1. Hey Flora…your 39 more than doubles my total of 18.

One of your favorites is my Top movie of 1936….The Awful Truth…..and Cary Grant has nothing to do with it…..lol.

Snow White is an all-time classic…..I wonder what would have happened if it tanked and put Disney out of business….think of all the great movies that might not exist.

Thanks for checking out this yearly review, your comment and your tally….all are greatly appreciated.
