Errol Flynn in The Adventures of Robin Hood

This movie page looks at 1938 Top Grossing Movies Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1938 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1938 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1938.  Obviously many movies made in 1937 earned box office dollars in 1938.  On the other side many movies made in 1938 made money in 1939 and later.  This page will looks at 125 1938 Top Grossing Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1938 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

  1. Hello Bruce, did you have box office figures for “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” released in 1938 and produced by David O’Selznick ?

    1. Hey Max….The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is sitting in 54th place. By using the Harrison Reports, some books and wiki…..was able to produce a box office number for the movie. That is by far, NOT, the source we want to use….but we feel pretty good about the result. Plus….by knowing it lost $300,000 on a $1.50 million budget……we have another formula we can use……and both calculations produced the same number.

  2. Cogerson

Interesting stats as usual. My tally is 33 of your listed films that I recall watching. Just looking at your critics’ ratings, there are 9 movies rated above 80, (and none above 90). 1939 has 19 above 80 on your critics’ ratings, which I think are not definitive, but these totals are about what I would expect going in. I agree with Steve that only The Adventures of Robin Hood really seems a first water classic. Bringing Up Baby? Funny, but also silly at times. It has been a while since I last watched it, but it did seem to me that characters stepped out of character at times to provide farce. I guess how one reacts to that determines if one thinks of this one as one of the funniest of all time or just a pretty good comedy. Marie Antoinette deserves a mention for utter lavishness. MGM’s Palace of Versailles was actually bigger than the original. Ah, Hollywood at its grandest! About that one—Norma Shearer in my judgment, despite acting occasionally marred by over emphatic silent film gestures, probably gave the best performance by an actress during that year, going convincingly from a naïve teen-age girl to a broken woman heading to the guillotine. The movie is surprisingly candid about Louis XVI’s impotence, and the performances of Robert Morley (who should have gotten the best supporting actor Oscar) as Louis XVI, John Barrymore as Louis XV, and Joseph Schildkraut as the Duc d’Orleans are first rate. Schildkraut really goes all the way into mincing, effeminate posturing. Despite all kinds of flaws, and historical omissions, I find myself returning to this one quite often. The Great Waltz is another MGM extravaganza which has fallen through the cracks. It is a “biography” of Johann Strauss. Of course, as biography it is worthless, but the presentations of Tales of the Vienna Woods and The Blue Danube by imported director Julian Duvivier are spectacular. I think Duvivier should have won the best director Oscar. Pygmalion also deserves a mention as a very well done version of the Shaw play. Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller were much better casting than the aging Rex Harrison of 1964 and the miscast Audrey Hepburn.
1938? The lull before the explosion.

    1. Hey John
      1. Great comment….it was fun to read.
      2. Tally count: Dan – triple digits Flora/Lupino 34, John 33, Steve 16+, Cogerson 14.
      3. Love the mini-reviews on the movies.
      4. You have me interested in seeing The Great Waltz.
      5. Good take on Bringing Up Baby.
      6. So 1939 has twice as many 80% movies than 1938…well that makes sense.
Thanks for all of the feedback.

  3. Cogerson and anyone interested

1938 was actually a bad economic year. After unemployment was at 20% and more through 1935, it fell to 16.8% in 1936, and 14.2% in 1937. But the “second Depression” in 1938 sent it back to 19% in 1938. Unemployment would be 17% in 1939 & 14.5% in 1940. So the bottom line is 1938 & 1939 were worse economically than 1936 & 1937. This might explain the poor box office performance of some movies, such as Bringing Up Baby.
I recall that my old history prof back in the stone age (early 1960’s) blamed this second Depression on FDR trying to balance the budget.

    1. Hey John….thanks for a very good comment. Great stats on the second Depression….which I only vaguely remember reading about.

As President….I am sure FDR was used to being blamed for everything…..lol.

As for Bringing Up Baby….an out of control budget pretty much sunk that movie. But luckily it overcame that to become an all-time classic.

  4. Hey Dan. Wow..,what a massive list. Your tally easily tops the rest of us. Lots of great information on in this list. Reading your lists makes me realize I need to combine my records. Currently I have a red notebook from the 1980s, Letterboxd.com for the last three years….and an Access database from 2005 to 2014.

I am envious that you have seen so many of these classics on the big screen. Glad you are able to post these lists. It lets poeople see all the hard work you have done to make a log of your movie viewing history….very impressive….my hat off to you!

  5. These are the 155 1938 films I have seen since December 1992 when I hit film number 8000 that I had seen and started logging them two ways. Before that it was alphabetical but I added chronological then. Any classics I have probably seen before that, like the best picture of 1938 You Can’t Take it With You whick I saw in the Regency revival theater in 1979 with Twentieth Century (1934) with Carole Lombard.

The films are listed alphabetically followed by studio, star or co-stars (I stopped that part a few years ago) , date seen and source (TV channel, tape, DVD). A few notes FXM is the Fox Movie Channel, FN or First National is just another name for Warner Brothers, CUNY is a public television channel in the city etc.
