    1. Hey Sam….your attempt to be the 10 millionth visitor failed…..but thanks for your first ever comment on our website….love your Dad.

  1. Hey Bruce, one of my all time faves Casablanca is famously a 1942 movie, you won’t find it listed as a 1943 movie in any decent movie book. I know it competed with the films of 1943 at the Oscars and Wikipedia explains this anomaly thusly –

“Although an initial release date was anticipated for spring 1943, the film premiered at the Hollywood Theater in New York City on November 26, 1942, to coincide with the Allied invasion of North Africa and the capture of Casablanca. It went into general release on January 23, 1943, to take advantage of the Casablanca Conference, a high-level meeting in the city between British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt.”

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for the explanation about Casablanca. It sure makes it confusing….why could it not follow the directions that so many other movies followed successfully?….lol.

No matter what year this is, it is still an all-time great movie. 🙂

  2. And now we come to a ‘war’ year, 1943, a time when people were flocking to the cinema in their millions to escape the grim news stories of death and destruction happening in Europe and Asia.

I’ve seen just 35 of the 108 films listed, could have been better I suppose. And without a shadow of a doubt one of my favorites has to be Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt, his own personal favorite according to the man himself. Other favorites include – Phantom of the Opera, Destination Tokyo, Victory Through Air Power (Fascinating Disney animated movie on WWII), Action in the North Atlantic, Heaven Can Wait, Girl Crazy and I Walked With a Zombie.

For Whom the Bell Tolls was a huge hit, I have a good copy of it but it’s not a big favorite of mine though it looks great in Technicolor. At nearly three hours it drags, it’s about an hour too long.

Looking at my datafiles I have 44 films from 1943 in my movie collection – and I’ve seen 40 of these, so either my previous count was wrong or there are some films here not on your list.

    Action in the North Atlantic
    Air Force
    Bataan
    Crash Dive
    Desperadoes
    Destination Tokyo
    Edge of Darkness
    Five Graves to Cairo
    For Whom the Bell Tolls
Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman (Legacy box set)
    Gangs All Here ,The
    Ghost Ship
    Girl Crazy
    Guadalcanal Diary
    Gung Ho
    Guy Named Joe ,A
    Heaven Can Wait (Criterion)
    I Walked with a Zombie
    In Old Oklahoma
    Journey into Fear
    Lassie Come Home
    Leopard Man ,The
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
    More the Merrier ,The
    Northern Pursuit
    Outlaw ,The
    Ox-Bow Incident ,The
    Phantom of the Opera (1943)
    Return of the Vampire
    Revenge of the Zombies
    Sahara
    Saludos Amigos
    Seventh Victim ,The
    Shadow of a Doubt
    Sherlock Holmes – Faces Death
    Sherlock Holmes – In Washington
    Sky’s the Limit ,The
Son of Dracula (Legacy Box Set)
    Stage Door Canteen
    Tarzan Triumphs
    Tarzan’s Desert Mystery
    Thank Your Lucky Stars
    Victory Through Air Power
    zz-Germany – Munchhausen

Looks like you’ve missed a couple of horror classics – Son of Dracula and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. I’m a big fan of the Universal monsters series.

Another epic movie page Bruce, good work amigo. Voted Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. First of all….sorry I took so long to respond to this comment. My part-time job somehow managed to turn into a full-time job….but the 6 month contract I signed comes to an end at the end of this month….so hopefully I will be able to catch up here at UMR.com.
      2. Yep World War 2 was very good for the worldwide economy and movie theaters….movie admissions averaged over 90 million a week for the entire 1940s decade.
      3. War movies and news reels pulled millions into theaters a week. Once the war ended and television arrived…these glory days came to a quick end.
      4. Your 35 movies watched almost triples my total….but falls to Flora and gets destroyed by Dan’s total.
      5. Of your favorites…I have seen Shadow of a Doubt (one of the better Hitch movies) and Destination Tokyo (Cary Grant hit)….but I have not seen any of the others you mentioned. I will have to check them out.
      6. This page is just the ones that have been fully researched….I did not include the ones that I have box office grosses on but have not included in any current page. I am sure I have box office numbers on some of the ones you listed but are not on my table. You and Dan…put me to shame when it comes to listing the movies watched.
      7. I do have most of the movies that I watched in theaters….thinking about condensing lots of my notes and making one long long list of movies watched in theaters. That would be movies from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s….five decades….damn I must be getting old…..lol.
As always…thanks for the visit, the comment and the tally count….always appreciated.
