1944 Top Grossing Movies

This movie page looks at 1944 Top Box Office Movies Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1944 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1944 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1944.  Obviously many movies made in 1943 earned box office dollars in 1944.  On the other side many movies made in 1944 made money in 1945 and later.  This page will looks at 128 1944 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1944 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

Our UMR Top 50 of 1944

How the Box Office Numbers were Calculated

Sadly in 1944….BoxOfficeMojo was not around to keep track of box office earnings. Back then earnings seem to be a secret and a secret that needed to be safely locked up.  When studios did report box office stats they used “box office rentals”.  Box office rentals were the amount of money the studio got back from the theaters.  It is NOT the box office gross.  We created a computer program that looked at box office rentals and known box office grosses in my database.  My program found over 2,000 movies that matched that criteria and came up with an average of 2.2.  Meaning that box office gross was 2.2 times greater than box office rentals.  It is not an exact calculation….but it is the multiplier I used to calculate the grosses.  For example:  Lets look at Errol Flynn’s Desperate Journey. Desperate Journey returned to RKO studies $2,029,000 million in box office rentals.  Using my multiplier of 2.2….I calculate that the box office gross was $4,463,000 million in 1942.

If a big budget movie made $4.43 million today it would be considered a huge box office bomb (can you say The Adventures of Pluto Nash?).  To compare box office results from movies from different eras you have to use tickets sold as the common denominator.  Back in 1942 the average movie admission was .28 cents (Box Office Mojo says it is .23 cents…but I disagree with their number).  So you take the box office gross and divide it by average movie admission….in this case…$4.43 million divided by $.23 you get 15.8 million tickets sold in 1942. Now (have I lost you yet?) you take the average movie admission price today ($8.14) and multiply that by tickets sold.  15.8 * $8.14 = $128.61 million  So if Desperate Journey was released this year it would earn about $125.00 million.  Desperate Journey’s unadjusted box office total of 4.43 million would rank as the 153rd highest grossing film of 2014….right behind The Skelton Twins.  But if we look at Desperate Journey’s adjusted box office total of $125.00 million…it would rank as the 23rd highest grossing movie of 2014….one spot ahead of Lucy.

    1. Following are the New York City free over the air debut dates for 161 1944 films. All films debuted on local TV except for the U.K. film Madonna of the Seven Moons which actually debuted on the ABC network. Code, CH 2 -= WCBS (local, film debuted in other cities on different dates), 4 = WNBC (local), 5 = WNEW, 7 = WABC (local), 9 = WOR (an RKO station and got most of RKO’s films), 11 = WPIX and 13 at the time, up till 1962, WNTA (it became WNET public TV that year). This is not every 1944 film that aired on free TV, only ones that I have a record of. Source was TV Guide for the New York Area which listed debuts back then.

      1. Hey Dan….as always your lists are always interesting and impressive. So taking your total of 161 1944 movies watched….I dug out my Reel Fact book which lists the amount of movies released in a year.

In 1944 401 American movies and 40 imported movies were released in the United States….so some percentages…..my table which currently lists 103 movies only represents 23.35% of the movies released in 1944.

Your percentage watched is at a pretty incredible 37%. I would guess my total would be about 25 or 5.66%. I thought I watched lots of movies…but you are the champ.

Thanks for the headsup on Belle of Yukon….not sure how I did that…but the error has been fixed.

        Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I have seen something like 20 for this year and my favorites are
Gaslight/ one of the best part of Grant
to have and have not/ Bogart and Bacall first meeting
double indemnity / Mrs Dietrichson by Stanwick / Wilder wanted Dietrich
kismet / Dietrich in gold legs
hangover square / London and Darnell
    lifeboat / Hitchcock
henri V / famous part of Olivier
it happened to morrow / Clair french director and Darnell
and the best for me is
    Laura
    i saw it a lot
great pages it would be interresting with the world box office because that was the end of the war so all these films were the first we saw in Europe
    thanks for the page
    pierre

    1. Hey Pierre

      Tally count:
Dan 128 (Total all 1944 movies)
      Lupino 51
      Flora 40
      Steve 25
      Pierre 20
      Cogerson 17

I like many of the ones you mentioned as your favorites…..with Laura and Double Indemnity being all-time classics.

I plan on adding in the worldwide grosses that I have before I go to bed.

      Thanks for the feedback.

  3. 51 of the movies seen. Can’t understand what made Frenchman’s Creek so popular, although I really love Joan Fontaine.
My favs are Summer Storm, It happened Tomorrow, Hangover Square (Darnell was VERY busy in 1944, 2 more of her movies on the list!), Double Indemnity, Laura.
Meet Me in St. Louis, Going My Way, Murder My Sweet, Lifeboat, Arsenic and Old Lace (Grant and Priscilla Lane!), Since you went away, The seventh Cross, Woman in the Window, Cover Girl, Pin Up Girl, White Cliffs of Dover, Mr. Skeffington and Dragon Seed. Thank you for another full classic Year!

    1. HI LUPINO

I don’t want to steal your thunder but I simply HAD to say I agree with you about Frenchman’s Creek and to be fair Bruce doesn’t go overboard about it either as you will see he gives it just a 58% rating for critic/audience in his table, PS Agree with you too about Joan Fontaine!

      1. Hey Bob,

always nice talking to someone here 😉
I usually like movies based on novels by Daphne du Maurier, but Creek is just a long, albeit colourful, booooore….

        1. HI LUPINO
          1. I felt the same way about Alfred Hitchcock’s Under Capricorn which Bruce gives a paltry 55.3% for critic/audience approval on his Hitchcock page and which unlike Frenchman’s Creek does not seem to have been over popular with wider audiences earning an adjusted domestic gross of jut $65.9 dollars according to Bruce and appearing as low as No 90 in the 1949 box office charts

2 Mind you I risk Steve Lensman sulking with me for daring to criticise Hitchcock – I think it’s an Englishman- idolising-another-Englishman kind of thing you know whereas I’m a sort of cosmopolitan guy myself. You will need to be wary in the matter because believe it or not some people will go into their shell if you disagree with them.

3 These annual reviews of Bruce’s are very interesting to me because film historians have long argued that though film audiences in general have dropped off there has been such a standardisation of tastes in recent years that the very top films today can often be just as popular as the biggest earners in the 40s. There seems to be some evidence of that in Bruce’s comprehensive stats because the combined adjusted grosses for the top 20 movies in a number of the years that Bruce has covered and I have sampled are remarkably similar to the overall actual gross that Box Office Mojo quotes for the top 20 movies of 2016. Without the Cogerson site it would be impossible to make such comparisons so we’re very lucky.

          Best wishes BOB

          1. LUPINO In my posts I meant $65.9 MILLION dollars of course for Under Capricorn. Apologies for the error. BOB

          2. Hi again Bob,

interesting comparison between Creek and Capricorn, although I would prefer the latter one, I must admit it doesn’t invite repeated viewing 😉 Considering Bergman’s popularity at the time, it really was a disappointment at the boxoffice. I am a huge Hitchcock fan myself, and I think even a bad Hitch has something good to offer, so I might understand where Steve is coming from 🙂 Still, I wouldn’t argue with anybody calling Capricorn boring or Topaz overblown and confusing- just leave The Birds and Vertigo alone!!! I am really glad I discovered Bruce’s page, so many interesting information to be found here… Good comment on the similarities in classic and modern box office grosses!

          3. Hey Bob…thanks for the kind words. Good to know that the Top 20 are close….when we switched the box office equation….I spent many hours comparing the numbers and it seems these “new” numbers make a whole lot more sense. Good feedback.

          4. Hey Lupino….glad you discovered our page as well. Sorry you found it when for the first time in 5 plus years I am having a hard time keeping up. Hopefully things are getting back on track.

        2. Under Capricorn is one of my least favorite Hitchcock movies….so I agree with your comment…100%….it does make you wonder what Hitch saw in the novel…that made him want to make the movie. 🙂

      2. Hey Bob….I double check the numbers….and it did in fact earn that much….3.5 million in rentals was pretty stout for 1944. That 58% does not make me want to rush out and watch it. 🙂

    2. Hey Lupino
      1. Tally count: Dan 128 (Total all 1944 movies), Lupino 51, Flora 40, Steve 25, Pierre 20 and poor Cogerson did last at 17.
      2. As for Frenchman’s Creek…..it is listed as one of the biggest hits of the entire 1940s decade….this was found in Variety.
      3. I am sure many years from now the Transformers movies will be confusing lots of people….as they will not understand how they made so much movie.
      4. Like Bob mentioned in his comment….it did not score well in my critic/audience column….58% is not too stellar…especially since it seems it is easier to reach 60% with the classic movies….I think critics are more forgiving that when they look at modern movies.
      5. Yep Darnell was very busy…4 movies with an average gross of $96.50 million.
      6. I like many of the favorites you list….with Murder My Sweet, Lifeboat, Arsenic and Old Lace and Woman in the Window being my favorites.
      7. Glad you liked this page….when I do the next year in will be 1945….which mean we have pages from 1937 to 1946. I guess I will have to knock out the rest of the 1940s to.
Thanks for the visit, the comment and the tally count.

      1. Hey Bruce,

5: Linda Darnell has 5 movies on your list- guess you forgot her costarring part in Buffalo Bill? O’ Hara and Darnell in one film- only the big screen was able to showcase those two beauties at once lol!
6: Looking forward to ANY page featuring a whole classic year!

        1. Hey Lupino….yep I forgot about Buffalo Bill….my UMR column works best with 2 stars listed…and Buffalo Bill currently has 4 stars with UMR pages….and Darnell and Joel McCrea got left off…..I know that is crazy leaving McCrea off.

My next classic page will be Rosalind Russell….almost done with that one….and a 1945 page is coming in the near future too.

          Thanks for all the support.

  4. I have seen 40 of these movies.

You’ve listed Belle of the Yukon twice.

    My ten favourites are:

    Double Indemnity
    Laura
    To Have and Have Not
    Gaslight
    Meet Me in St. Louis
    Going My Way
    Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
    Murder My Sweet
    Lifeboat
    Arsenic and Old Lace

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Fixed the Yukon issue….thanks for seeing that.
      2. I have 17 to your 40.
      3. Of your favorites….I have seen 9 of the 10…..and I have Meet Me In St. Louis ready to watch.
      4. I agree…the nine we have seen are all excellent movies.
      Thanks for the feedback.
