1950 Top Box Office Movies

Bette Davis & Thelma Ritter in 1950’s All About Eve

This movie page looks at 1950 Top Box Office Movies.  Finding box office information for movies made in the 1940s and 1950s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1950 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1950 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1950.  Obviously many movies made in 1949 earned box office dollars in 1950.  On the other side many movies made in 1950 made money in 1951 and later.  This page will looks at 174 1950 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1950 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis. *The box office totals for Cinderella include all of the re-releases it has had over the years.

  • Sort 1950 Top Box Office Movies by yearly domestic box office rank

  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each 1950 Top Box Office Movies received.

  1. I love the new Dynamic page.

I have seen 52 of these movies. Favourites include:

    Sunset Blvd.
    Night and the City
    Panic in the Streets
    All About Eve
    D.O.A.
    Winchester ’73
    Champagne For Caesar
    Captain Horation Hornblower
    Harvey
    Born Yesterday
    The Asphalt Jungle

    1. Hey Flora….glad you like how the new dynamic tables look….hopefully we will keep finding ways to make it more visually appealing….just last night we found a % for the critic audience button.

Your 52 movies watched tops me and Steve but is behind Dan’s massive total. I have seen all of them except for Champagne for Caesar which I have not even heard of. I will have to check that one out. Thanks for checking out our latest yearly review page.

  2. These are the 151 1950 movies I’ve seen since December 1992 when I hit film 8000 that I’ve seen. Pictures like The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve were seen pre 1992 and who knows what I’ve seen from this year if any till I update my listings early next year. So these were all seen December 1992 through December 2016. Key – title, studio, stars when I used to list them, date seen and source (TV channel, tape or DVD).

    1. Hey Dan….as always your movie watched lists are truly impressive. 151 movies is easily the most of people that have shared their tallies. Lots of great movies on this list….thanks for sharing.

  3. Hi Bruce,

Yeah, your dynamic webpage it’s a great idea. And I like the new presentation of the table. Congratulation to WoC.

1950 was a good year. My favorites are Winchester 73, Eve, Rio Grande, King Solomon’s mines, Sunset Bvd and Asphalt Jungle (I love this film). I’ve seen 21 films of the list.

    Wait 1951 impaciently.

  4. Hi Bruce, good to see you back on board.

Not sure if I should comment now or wait till it’s finished. I see boxes with the word Mistake on them.

Looking at the chart my suggestion would be to make the boxes containing the title of the movie bigger so we could see the film titles more clearly.

The Box Office Rank by Year box is too big for the 2 or 3 numbers they would contain, it’s bigger than the film title box. Not sure how useful that chart is, you could simply get rid of it and add a comment at the bottom mentioning what the top 5 or top 10 box office films of the year were.

Be back later to see how it’s going. Good luck!

    1. Hey Steve….WoC has read your comment and included some changes…what do you think now? Your feedback is greatly appreciated….as we strive to make these pages easy to read. The bad news is we lost the “Rank” column the older table and the “Search” button is not very cooperative. On the good side is it is dynamic….we no longer have issues with people with ” ‘ ” in their names like Maureen O’Hara and Pat O’Brien.

As for this page…you get an early appearance by some guy named Charlton Heston. Your return feedback is eagerly antcipated.

      1. Bruce, Debbie, it looks great! Much more readable, a clean interface, I like it a lot.

The titles stick it out more, as they should and I like the highlighted UMR links to the actors from each film, adds a nice bit of a colour to the chart. Less clutter now. You can figure out the box office rank of each film by sorting the box office gross, no need for a separate column.

I’ve seen 32 of the 174 films listed, less than I thought. Favorites include – All About Eve, Sunset Boulevard, Cinderella, Destination Moon, King Solomons Mines, Rio Grande, Treasure Island and Winchester 73.

Looking at my files I have 60 films from 1950 in my collection, so I may have seen more from this list and can’t remember. Some are missing from the chart.

All About Eve tops the charts followed by Sunset Boulevard, must have been hard choosing one of those two at the 1951 Oscars.

Cinderella was a big money maker for Disney.

        A big vote up!

        1. Hey Steve
          1. Glad you like this version better.
          2. One of the big things missing from this table that the older table had was the “rank” column which automatically appeared on the older table.
          3. The “too wide” column will be a probably on pages that we do not have many worldwide box office numbers on….for example…we have a https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/paul-newman-movies/ with that extra wide column.
          4. I am sure that in the future this current table will look way out of line….as we keep making changes.
          5. I have seen 26 of these movies….so I am not too far behind your tally of 32.
          6. I have seen most of the famous ones you listed…I was actually just reading about about Destination Moon….and how the special effects were ground breaking in that one…I will have to check that one out in the near future.
          7. I fixed you missing “A”s.
          8. Once again thanks for the feedback….it is greatly appreciated.

  5. Well this is the first brand new “Dynamic” webpage. Lots of tiny issues making this a slow process….but we are taking baby steps now.
