Hey Mike…..my spelling errors, literally take seconds to fix. Now…a new movie in the database takes much more effort. That increased time is required to put the movie in the database…and then have the database share information with the “dynamic”…when we first started doing that….it was pretty quick…now that is so much bigger it takes about a hour each time..WoC has it set to do it automatically in the middle of the night…but when I am working on it during the day…that hour is a pain.
1957 must be one of my favorite movie years – so many great titles! Like Chris, my top picks are 12 Angry Men and Paths of Glory (banned in France until 1975), two films which were not hits at the box office, but became timeless classics. Close follow-ups are 3:10 to Yuma and Bridge on and the River Kwai. Other favorites: Sweet Smell of Success, Witness for the Prosecution, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Sayonara, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Curse of Frankenstein, A Hatful of Rain and The Enemy Below. Two less well-known films I am curious to have box office information in case you are able to dig up any are The Strange One (Ben Gazzara’s first film) and The Bachelor Party.
Hey Phil. Glad you like this year in movies as well as this page. I agree there are some amazing movies listed here. Paths of Glory is a classic….sad only film buffs seem aware of that movie. I just recently rewatched The Curse of Frankenstein….good movie….one of Cushing’s better roles. I will have to see about the other two movies….I admit when it comes to this page I did no further research…..just listed the movies already listed in my database. So maybe I will have some b.o. information on those movies. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Bruce, I understand the list reflects the films in your database, and since so many successful movies are in fact in the database, usually I feel these annual lists are quite comprehensive. Still, it would make them even more so if all the Variety listed films were included, or at least those that grossed above a certain threshold. Though I realize it’s easy to make suggestions when one does not have to put them into practice 🙂

For me the two best movies of the year was 12 Angry Men and Paths of Glory, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Incidentally, Kirk Douglas is 101 today.
Funny Face and Silk Stockings weren’t bad musicals but clearly the Glory Days of MGM musicals were over. Although Warner’s Pajama Game is very good. Another favourite is The Incredible Shrinking Man. I’m surprised they’ve never made a remake.
Old Yeller was every school boy’s favourite, a must for anyone who loves dogs. Compared to some other years in the 50’s I don’t think ’57 is quite as distinguished.
Hey Chris. Those are two awesome movies. 12 Angry Men is a Top 10 IMDb movie. While Paths of Glory is my favorite Kubrick movie. Happy belated Birthday to Kirk. His 100th birthday got lots of press….apparently 101st is not as impressive…..lol. I agree it is interesting that The Incredible Shrinking Man never got a reboot. These are the 138 1957 movies that I have seen since I saw my number 8000 in December of 1992 through December of 2016. Ooh the lists will be updated next year any 57’s seen in 2017. Classics like Bridge on the River Kwai and Jailhouse Rock were seen previous to 800. Key – film, studio, stars when I used to list (through 2013), date seen and source, whether DVD, tape or TV channel. You know I saw over 800 movies in revival theaters, all prior to 1991.
