1966 Top Box Office Movies

Finding box office information for movies made before 1980 is not an easy task.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1966 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1966 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1966.   The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.    This only represents about 25% of the movies made in 1966….but should cover the top box office movies.

Ok….I guess ths picture should be the Top 6 minus Alfie….which got a picture at the top of the page.

  1. Hello Bruce,
Very good and very interresting time because i was near to be a teenager
    I saw a lot in movie place or on tv etc;
    My favorite film
The good, the bad and the ugly, without any doubt
And then my favorite actors, Burton, Mac Queen, Clint Eastwood, George Peppard
For the actresses, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Julie Andrews
Do you know that in Grand Prix, you can see Françoise Hardy who is a french singer and she was very famous at top 50 in those days….in France!!
    Always good to read
    Thank you
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre. As always thanks for the visit and the comment. I am right there with you on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. As we get closer to the 1970s and 1980s more current stars are making their presence felt….Eastwood, Andrews and Fonda are still making movies….not to mention my favorite Michael Caine. Interesting about Hardy in Grand Prix. Thanks for the kind words about this page.

    1. Hey Helakoski…..yep work and life keep getting in the way of quality time on UMR……seems lately I have been getting about 30 minutes before work and 20 minutes before sleep lately…..I would cut back on the sleep…but I only sleep about 5 hours a night.

    1. It’s working now. The yearly totals will keep dropping the more modern as more films were seen prior to 1992 when I started tracking my older pictures. My school made us see A Man for All Seasons, they rented it and we had to pay $1.50 to see circa 1970. The Jerry Lewis and Elvis pics were seen in that era. Anyway between December 1992 and December 2017 I have only seen 74 1966 films for the first time. Key is film, studio, stars if I listed, date seen and source (TV channel, DVD or tape).

You’ll notice a couple of Robert Vaughn David McCallum pictures on the list. There were 8 Man from Uncle movies made from 2 episodes each shown in cinemas in Europe, a couple were big hits in the U.K.

      1. Hey Dan
        1. Yep….your totals are indeed falling….but they are still pretty impressive.
        2. Wow….they made each student pay…..I guess back then getting a print of the movie was not an easy thing to do….watching a Best Picture Oscar winning movie like A Man For All Seasons would have been worth it.
        3. I did notice the Man From Uncle Movies……another example of just how big James Bond was back then…..he made spies an entire franchise of movies and television shows.
Thanks as always for sharing this information…..it is always appreciated.

    2. Sorry your comment had some issues……looked in Spam folder and I did not see anything caught up in the filter…..or at least anything in the filter that should have not been caught.

  2. Of the 128 movies on the chart there are 48 films I know I’ve seen, and probably a few more I’ve forgotten I’d seen from way back.

Looking at my files there are 88 films from 1966 in my movie collection, I haven’t watched them all. Favorites include –

    Blue Max ,The
    Brides of Fu Manchu
    Carry on Screaming
    Destination Inner Space
    Dracula Prince of Darkness
    Duel at Diablo
    El Dorado
    Fahrenheit 451
    Fantastic Voyage
    Funeral in Berlin
    Grand Prix
    Khartoum
    Modesty Blaise
    Murderer’s Row
    One Million Years BC
    Our Man Flint
    Paradise Hawaiian Style
    Plague of the Zombies
    Professionals ,The
    Queen of Blood
    Rasputin The Mad Monk
    Reptile ,The
    Sand Pebbles ,The
    Silencers ,The
    Wrong Box ,The
    zz-Italy – Big Gundown ,The
    zz-Italy – Django
zz-Italy – Good the Bad and the Ugly ,The
zz-Italy – Hills Run Red ,The
    zz-Italy – Navajo Joe
zz-Japan – Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster
zz-Japan – War of the Gargantuas

My top favorites are – Fantastic Voyage, Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Professionals, The Blue Max, El Dorado and Our Man Flint.

Looking at the grosses – Hawaii biggest hit of the year? I saw it, not that impressed. John Huston’s The Bible not quite the flop I’d thought it was, maybe I was thinking of George Stevens Greatest Story Ever Told. Good to see Sergio Leone’s western classic one of the years biggest hits, and a worldwide hit too I suspect.

Nice work as always Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. The odd thing about The Good the Bad and the Ugly is that it was really a 1968 smash hit in America, it opened at the end of December 1967 there.

A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965) also first opened in 1967 in the US, so all three Leone western classics were released within months of each other in 1967.

      1. Yep the Eastwood/Leone movies will be out of line in these yearly reviews. When we get back to current years…WoC has it where the movies will actually be listed twice….in the year they were made and the year they were released…..not 100% sure if I like that or not. Clint actually became an international star……while here in the states he was still only known as “that guy from Rawhide”.

    2. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the tally, the visit, kind words and comment.
      2. 48…..pretty sure that is slightly less than your 1965 tally….I thought my totals would start to increase the closer we got to 2018….so far….that is actually a big fat NO.
      3. My tally is 12 behind you.
      4. Your favorites list is smaller than your epic 1965 favorites…..of those movies I have seen 13 of them with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and El Dorado being two of my all-time favorite westerns.
      5. I think The Bible falls into the Waterworld category….made a lot of money….but the budget is all people remember it for.
      6. Hawaii…when looking at the years a movie was made was actually Julie Andrews third straight number one movie of the year…..after The Sound of Poppins and Mary Music. She was a huge draw…unless it was Gene Hackman in a supporting role that got people to the theater…lol.
      Good stuff.

  3. Hello everybody.
    1. The latest yearly review now gives us coverage from 1930 to 1966….only three more years and the 1960s will be done.
    2. Sorry…did not have time this morning to include trailers…..will try to go back and add about 40 or 50 trailers in the near future.
    3. I have seen 36 of these movies….a couple LESS than my 1965 tally….I was hoping it would increase.
    4. Glad to see Michael Caine hit the Top 25 Grossing Star list.
    5. My Top 5 1966 movies? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, How To Steal A Million, Alfie, Seconds and The Professionals.
    6. Casino Royale is one of the worst movies ever assembled…..how did it make so much money?
    Time to go to work.
