1966 Top Box Office Movies

Finding box office information for movies made before 1980 is not an easy task.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1966 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1966 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1966.   The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.    This only represents about 25% of the movies made in 1966….but should cover the top box office movies.

Ok….I guess ths picture should be the Top 6 minus Alfie….which got a picture at the top of the page.

  1. Hi. Was looking for “The Family Way” and did not find it here on in ’67. Then saw you don’t have either Hayley or John Mills on the site. Wikiwhateverthe hell has rentals at $2,225,000 (I guess for ’67) Great movie, by the way. Any thoughts? Cheers,Mark

    1. Hey Mark……looks like I might have missed adding that one into my database. Probably because a 1966 movie got listed on the 1967 Variety Year Top Grossers List. But my Variety sure enough shows the rental figure show on wikiwhateverthe hell….lol. After my database gets through updating I will add in that movie. Good eye as always.

        1. Hey Mark…….The Family Way is now in the database and will show up on this 1966 table the next time the entire database updates later today. Here are the rankings we have for Hayley Mills so far.

  2. ‘ The Sand Pebbles ‘ has now emerged as the most durable, compelling
    –indeed– prophetic picture of 1966.

WHO really cares about the big winner of that year, ‘Man for ALL Seasons’ ?

WHO cares about MATHAU’s ‘Fortune Cookie’ ?

Surely, surely, ‘Sand Pebbles’ should have been picked – –
    and McQueen’s and Mako’s performances – too.

‘The Sand Pebbles’ – -continues to move – – 6 decades later !

    CHECK IT OUT

    1. Hey H%…..good thoughts on The Sand Peebles. Happy to see our ranking system put the movie in the Top 3. Personally my Top 3 would be The Sand Peebles, Alfie and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I agree that The Sand Peebles is still very relevant today. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

  3. HI Bruce,
Not that 1966 was a bad year for the movies, but I have fewer favorites than in most other years you covered from the 60s so far. Still, I have again attempted to put together my personal top 10 of the 38 films on the list I have seen (in no particular order):

The Sand Pebbles (McQueen takes another big step forward)
Seconds (disturbing but effective, with an interesting performance from Rock Hudson)
The Blue Max (George Peppard at his peak)
Khartoum (one my favorite performances from Charlton Heston)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (my favorite film of the year)
Duel at Diablo (under-rated by UMR in my view; unusual western with great musical score)
Alfie (Caine becomes a major star, and I see his photo heading this page 😉 )
The Professionals (Burt Lancaster in top shape)
The Fortune Cookie (the first pairing of Lemmon and Matthau, with the latter now becoming a star)
Our Man Flint (James Coburn’s star-making role, though the film was not quite as entertaining as it should have been)

A few other worthy (or unworthy) mentions: A Man for all Seasons, the critical winner of the year; Fantastic Voyage was a landmark sci-fi film, though it becomes less exciting upon repeated viewing); Grand Prix is the ultimate racing movie and it broke new grounds in terms of technical aspects and effects, but had a conventional story line; Return of the Seven, one of the worse sequels to a great film ever made (it seems they did not even try to make it good). Meanwhile, the two biggest box offices of the year, Hawaii, and the Bible, get relatively lukewarm critical ratings, though I enjoyed them enough.

As a James Garner fan, I find it interesting that Flora listed Mister Buddwing within her top 10 list, as it is sometimes seen as one of his worse films. I recently saw it, expecting to be disappointed. However, despite some glaring imperfections, it is actually an interesting film.

    1. Hi, Phil.

I am a James Garner fan as well. I enjoy Mister Buddwing as a compelling drama about amnesia. I don’t mind the imperfections because I enjoy watching Garner.

      1. Hi Flora, same here, I would watch Garner in any-thing. Overall, I enjoyed Mister Buddwing as well, but my favorite film performances from James Garner are in: The Great Escape, The Thrill of it All, The Americanization of Emily, 36 Hours, Hour of the Gun, Support Your Local Sheriff, Marlowe, Skin Game, Murphy’s Romance, Maverick and The Notebook.

  4. Hello Bruce,
the were very good Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef but the best and the best of the best
THE MUSIC, so so good in this film like Stars Wars when you heard it you know exactly
    What is the film.
    Bye
    Pierre

  5. I have seen 49 movies from 1966. I just barely edged out Steve.

The highest rated film I have seen is A Man For All Seasons at 1.

The highest rated film I have not seen is The Sand Pebbles at number 3. I have tried watching it before. I may try again.

The lowest rated film I have seen is Alvarez Kelly at 95.

    My totals by ranking are:

    7/10
    13/20
    20/30
    27/40
    31/50
    35/60
    38/70
    43/80
    47/90
    49/100
    49/135

My Top Ten Favourite Movies Are:

    The Professionals
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
    Georgy Girl
    Our Man Flint
    Arabesque
    Fantastic Voyage
    Gambit
    The Wrong Box
    Mister Buddwing
    The Glass Bottom Boat

    1. One other thought. I could not come up with a top 15. If I had done so, Alvarez Kelly and The Blue Max would have been included.

      1. That would make a very good Top 12. I figured there would have to be away to get a Widmark in your favorite list…lol.

    2. Hey Flora
      1. Yep you just barely edged out Steve….is this the last yearly victory for Flora over Steve and myself? Our counts….49 to 48 to 36 (another last place finish for me).
      2. My first is #12 Born Losers…which rated so high because it earned so much money…that 61% review score is not too impressive.
      3. Alvarez Kelly is also my lowest scored movie that I have seen.
      4. 65% of the Top 20 …and then you pretty much hold that % for the next 30 movies….as you are at 50% of the Top 50.
      5. I am actually at 75% of the Top 20….but then start fading fast……just doomed to be at the bottom….lol.
      6. As for your favorite movies….I have seen 7 of them……only missing Mister Buddwing, Gambit and Arabesque (which I want to see)…..I would say Good, Bad and Ugly, Fantastic Voyage and The Professionals would be among my favorites too.
      7. Gambit is one of the few Caine movies that I have not seen….I saw the remake…but never the original….as you know…I just recently watched The Wrong Box….so my total Caine movies is now over 90.
      Good stuff as always.
