  1. 1968 was a landmark year for sci-fi fans – it saw the release of 2001 a Space Odyssey, one of the highest rated movies of all time. And the first Planet of the Apes movie was released too. both were big hits at the box office too. I wrote about those two films at hubpages a few years ago, aaah memories…

I’ve seen 45 of the 140 films on the chart. Looking at my files I have 82 films from 1968 in my movie collection. Favorites include –

    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Bullitt
    Coogan’s Bluff
    Countdown
    Dark of the Sun
    Devil Rides Out ,The
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave

zz-Italy – Once Upon a Time in the West
    zz-Italy – Professional Gun ,A
    zz-Japan – Destroy All Monsters
    zz-Japan – King Kong Escapes

Good to see 2001 topping all the charts. It was initially a slow burn at the box office but it kept getting bigger and bigger as word of mouth got round among young people that it was ‘the ultimate trip’ which was the poster tagline on the first of many rereleases.

Btw 2018 is the 50th anniversary of Space Odyssey and director Christopher Nolan, a big fan, is presenting a brand new 70mm print of the film at the Cannes film festival. And it will have a limited release in a few theaters on May 18th.

Another epic movie year page Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the V.T.C (visit, tally, comment) C.V.T. (comment, visit, tally) or T.V.C. (tally, visit, comment).
      2. I agree 1968 produced some of the most iconic science fiction movies ever…..2001 is our UMR movie of the year……while Planet of the Apes is still going strong 50 years after making it’s debate……last year an Ape movie was one of the best of the year.
      3. Ah…..the good old HubPage days…..sadly those days are ancient memories….with problem only me, you, Flora and Soren having any idea what you are talking about…lol.
      4. Tally count: Dan 76, Flora 45, Steve 45, Cogerson 43 and Laurent 24.
      5. I have seen about half of your favorites with Once Upon A Time, Planet of the Apes and Night of the Living Dead being in my favorites as well.
      6. King Kong Escapes is listed as a 1967 movie on IMDb…it can be found on our 1967 Movie Page.
      7. Very interesting about Nolan presenting a brand new 70 mm…..that sounds like it would be fun to see on the big screen.
      Good feedback as always.

  2. Although my overall total for 1968 movies is around the same total for other 60s years, the percentage of top films I have seen has started to drop as I predicted it would as we get more recent.

    I have seen 45 1968 movies.

The highest rated film I have seen is Oliver!

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is 2001: A Space Odyssey. Really. I have seen parts of it including the ending, but I have never watched the whole film. This is the first time I have missed the top rated film, and it won’t be the last.

The lowest rated film I have seen is The Legend of Lylah Clare. Kim Novak plays the title role.

My Viewing By Rankings Is As Follows:

6/10 (ouch!) – also not seen Lion in Winter, Rosemary’s Baby, and Romeo and Juliet
    13/20
    18/30
    23/40
    25/50

    38/90
    42/100
    44/110
    45/120
    45/140

My Top 12 Favourite Movies of 1968 are:

Once Upon a Time in the West
    Bullitt
    The Thomas Crown Affair
    Funny Girl
    Madigan
    The Odd Couple
    Planet of the Apes
    The Devil’s Brigade
    The Stalking Moon
    Oliver!
    Where Eagles Dare
    Firecreek

    1. Hey Flora
      1. As always thanks for (1) the Visit (2) the Tally count (3) the Comment…..I need to come up with a quick way to say all of that…..how Thanks for the T.V.C. or Thanks for the C.V.T…..or Thanks for the V.T.C.?
      2. Yes your totals are going down….but your are still holding off Steve and myself…..though it is getting tight…..45 for you and Steve and 43 for me……with Dan being the Top Dog and Laurent with 24.
      3. Ouch is right….you have actually seen more of the movies ranked 11th to 20th than the Top 10…..not thinking that has happened too many times.
      4. I am sure Steve is stunned that you have not seen all of 2001: A Space Odyssey……that movie has lots of supporters…..but it also has lots of people that do not understand why people love it so much. I have a friend that jokes….”If I can’t fall asleep…I start to watch A Space Odyssey and within 10 minutes I am asleep.”
      5. Of your Top 12…I have seen 11 of them…..only The Devil’s Brigade has escaped me. I wonder how Madigan made the list…lol.
      6. Good to see two Steve McQueen movies in your Top 12….The Stalking Moon is an underrated western for sure.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. And the numbers keep dropping, 76 1968 films seen for the first time since December 1992 when I hit film 8000. I saw Blackbeard’s Ghost and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the theater, Never a Dull Moment, Speedway, Stay Away Joe and Head with the Monkees on network TV back in the early 70’s. Don’t Raise the Bridge Lower the Water which I also saw in a theater back then was the first Jerry Lewis film I saw. Also saw The Detective in the cinemas back then (i’m remembering these without looking at your list). I saw Wild in the Streets at a American International film festival at the Museum of Modern Art in 1979. Anyway the 75 I saw for the first time when they were 24 years or older;

    1. Hey Dan….your tally might be dropping but it is still a pretty stout number….and one that still leads the way. Dan 76, Cogerson 43 and Laurent 24. Wow….the second mention of Blackbeard’s Ghost….that one barely registered with me…when looking at all of these great movies.

I remember seeing the trailer for Never A Dull Moment and getting all excited……when I finally saw it in the mid to late 1970s…. released (a) it had lots of dull moments and (b) that it was a Disney re-release. Probably the first time I released that Disney loved re-releasing their movies.

Lots of good movies in your “Seen” movies list. As always…thanks for sharing the information.

      1. Disney used to what release maybe 3 to 5 films a year back then. Also saw Blackbeard’s Ghost on a re-issue in the mid 70’s. I think the Love Bug is 1969, first of 3 films I saw at Radio City Music Hall (we went to the Easter show). They were all Disney films I saw there, the other two being Pete’s Dragon in 1977 and Return to Oz in 85 (and you got stage shows). When I was a kid in 1968 I went to the neighborhood theater to see The Future Perils of Laurel and Hardy. I was surprised lots of kids I knew went to that also. They really went to see the other half of the double bill, Planet of the Apes. I saw 4 of those early Apes pictures which were always on double bills with something else I wanted to see. The 3rd Elvis movie of 68 (I mentioned the other 2 in previous comment), Live a Little, Love a Little I saw on TV in the early 70’s also (couldn’t remember title).

    1. Hey Bobby…..just fixed those pesky 1967 errors. Sometimes as I am writing some of the changes do not take because I have the page opened in too many places….this was an easy fix….when it wipes away the “Possibly Interesting Things About The Table” stats it is very very frustrating.

  4. I have seen 43 of these movies or 30.70% of the movies listed. That is up 13 movies from my tally count in 1967…and now I go to work.

    1. Hi Bruce,
Thanks for this new year. I think 1968 was a good year. I’ve seen 24 movies of this list. I like à lot of them. Bullitt, 2001, Green Berets, Where Eagles Dare, Coogan’s bluff, BlackBeard’s Ghost was funny and Once Upon a Time in West, one of my favorite movies.

In France, as you know the last one was a very big success. One of the 20 biggest of all-time, with near 15 millions people who saw it in theatres.
Bullitt was a big success too with near 4 millions of admissions. And 2001 was the first big success in France for a SF movie, with more than 3 millions admissions.

A very good stuff again Bruce. +1

      1. Hey Laurent….good to hear from you. This now makes 39 straight years with an UMR review….from 1930 to 1968……ranking over 5,000 classic movies….with it increasing almost every day.

Tally count….so far at least….me 43 you 24. I agree there are some quality movies in this table. Where Eagles Dare and Once Upon A Time In The West are favorites of mine as well. I have not seen Blackbeard’s Ghost…I will have to check that one out.

Great stats on how those movies did in France….amazing that Leone’s Once Upon At Time was 5 times more popular than the legendary 2001. Thanks for the visit and the kind words.
