  1. It is getting worse….only 24 movies seen, and really no favorites to mention. Of course I somehow like Hello Dolly, but it is not among my favorite musicals or Streisand films. Some of my alltime favorite movie stars appeared in dreadful pictures in 1969- still didn’t get further than the first 30 minutes of Jennifer Jones’ Angel, Angel, Down We Go, never finished the movie, Jane Wyman starring in a Bob Hope movie is not enough reason to give this one a try- though I do have it at home. Lana Turner in The Big Cube- gosh! Hepburn’s The Madwoman Of Chaillot…gimme a break, please! The Appointment and The Gypsy Moths are interesting, at least…but favorites? OK, Butch and Sundance, along with Dolly seem to top my personal chart- but give me any year between 1932 and 1962 to make this movie lover happy 🙁
Worse, I am afraid it won’t be getting any better with the yearly charts that are still missing…though the 80’s might be a better decade for me than the late 60’s and 70’s were.
Anyway, interesting oportunity to reflect on my perhaps quite limited taste in movies…but I could name a few European movies from this period that I enjoyed much more. So, as a reminder of were my preferences are, this is, again, a very interesting page and most welcome!

    1. I forgot to mention Topaz- my least favorite Hitchcock movie. Why do I feel the need to mention it? Simply because it proves the old saying that a weak Hitchcock film somehow is better than the best efforts of some other directors. Karin Dor’s dying scene is visually stunning.

      1. Any Hitchcock movie is indeed worth mentioning. That dying scene is spectacular. Topaz didn’t make my top 10 and it is not among my favourites, but my least favourite Hitchcock film is actually Under Capricorn, a film starring Ingrid Bergman.

        1. Flora, I do understand your comment about Under Capricorn, it is pretty close to Topaz in my book…but I must admit that I like it better- though nowhere close to other “non favorites” directed by Alfred the Great 😉
You wrote some time ago that you- like me- love british classics- I really think that movies like 39 Steps or the Lady Vanishes are top-notch Hitchcocks!
Happy to read that you are with me on Karin Dor’s dying scene!

        2. Hey Flora….right there with you on Under Capricorn….a great cast and great director in a very disappointing movie.

      2. Hey Lupino……good breakdown on Topaz….actually looking at Flora’s comment too…..Topaz and Under Capricorn of my least favorite Hitchcock movies. I have watched Topaz twice…..Under Capricorn has only one Cogerson viewing…..so maybe that one would be better on a second viewing….but I doubt it.

    2. Hey Lupino…..sorry your tally is getting smaller….but it is still a pretty good percentage of almost 20%. I agree it looks like your favorites had a rough 1969. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have not seen Hello Dolly…..though the crisp look of the attached trailer makes me think I should finally check that one out. I still remember seeing Hello Dolly appear in Wall-E…and thinking….I need to watch that movie….and now 10 years later…I am still thinking….I need to watch that movie…lol.

My tally should keep increasing……..so I am looking forward to the new years….as the march of UMR Yearly reviews continues. I appreciate the comment, visit and kind words. Good stuff!

  2. Getting closer to the 70s – my moviegoing years.

I’ve seen 32 of 123 films on the chart. Looking at my files I have 61 films from 1969 in my movie collection, I haven’t seen them all. My favorites include –

    Battle of Britain
    Bridge at Remagen ,The
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Good Guys and the Bad Guys ,The
    Illustrated Man ,The
    Italian Job ,The
Journey to the Far Side of the Sun
    Krakatoa – East of Java
    Mackenna’s Gold
    Marlowe
    Marooned
    Midnight Cowboy
    On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    Support Your Local Sheriff
    True Grit
    Undefeated ,The
    Valley of Gwangi ,The
    Wild Bunch ,The
    zz-Italy – Five Man Army

Butch Cassidy was a massive hit. Steve McQueen must have regretted dropping out of the film but he didn’t want to be billed second to Newman.

Hmmm the rating for Butch Cassidy is a bit low Bruce, barely made the top 10, even Cactus Flower is rated higher! Considering it’s one of your top favorite films… time for an update methinks. 😉

On my video charts the top 3 for 1969 so far are –

    The Wild Bunch 9.2
    Midnight Cowboy 8.9
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 8.6

Another top movie page Bruce, how many yearly charts have you done so far 40? Impressive. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for visit, comment, kind words and tally count.
      2. Hope your weekend went well.
      3. Tally count….Flora 34, Steve 32 and me 31….now that is pretty close.
      4. As for Butch Cassidy…..it would be the top one for me……but Metacritic’s low rating pulled it down…..a few months ago WoC included the Metacritic scores….some movies improved….but some like my Butch struggled.
      5. You have many great movies in your favorites….but more than a few I have never even heard of before…I will have to check some of those out.
      6. Let’s….with this 1969 page wrapping up the 1960s….we now have yearly reviews for 40 straight years…1930 to 1969.
      7. Good stuff as always.

      1. Bruce, I don’t use Metacritic for my ratings and now I’m glad I don’t – Butch Cassidy got 58 out of 100 or 5.8 out of 10 there which is far too low. Even the highly respected Die Hard gets just 7 out of 10 on there. The Sixth Sense, one of your favorites, a lowly 6.4.

You’re better off using Flickmetrix, which used to be called Cinesift, for modern movies – Die Hard gets 8.4 there and The Sixth Sense 8.0. Butch Cassidy gets 8.0 too. Flickmetrix alongside Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB and possibly Maltin should give a fair and sensible average rating total for both classic and modern movies.

        1. Flickmetrix uses Metacritic in their calculations too, though. That 80 that Flickmetrix calculates for that movie is clearly dragged down by Metacritic’s score.

EDIT: Yeah and Flickmetrix is just using the straight average of the five numbers it has to arrive at that 80. A better use of time would be finding some way to contact Metacritic about those movies and see if they can get more data, since a low number of reviews for those movies appears to be the only real problem for them.

    2. Steve, thanks for sharing. I saw 29. I have only seen 10 of your 20 favorites. I still have some catching up to do. : ^ )

  3. I have seen 34 movies from 1969. That is a steep decline from the previous years when I was averaging around 45 movies a year. This trend will continue.

The highest rated 1969 film I have seen is Midnight Cowboy.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Z.

The lowest rated film I have seen is The Great Bank Robbery at 94.

The film at the top of my to-see list is Death of a Gunfighter starring Richard Widmark.

Here is my viewing by rating:

    7/10 – missing Z, Anne of a Thousand Days, and Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice
    14/20
    18/30
    24/40
    27/50
    29/60 – below 50% now
    32/70
    33/80
    33/90
    34/100
    34/120 overall

My Top 10 Movies of 1969:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    Support Your Local Sheriff
    Cactus Flower
    Midnight Cowboy
    Paint Your Wagon
    The Reivers
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
    Battle of Britain
    MacKenna’s Gold
    The Italian Job

      1. Works for me…..not thinking any movies are going to be added……though I am still trying to figure out box office numbers for Last Summer and The Southern Star…..but I think I am going to fail with those two movies.

    1. Hey Flora…..it is getting closer in the tally count….but as we end the look at the 1960s…you are still on the top…34 for you, 32 for Steve and 31 for me. Here come the 1970s…..lol. Let’s see….I have seen all of your Top 10….with Butch, Sheriff and Paint Your Wagon being among my favorites. Paint Your Wagon is probably my favorite musical….I know I have terrible taste in musicals…lol.

My first miss is Hello Dolly…..but I have seen 15 of the Top 20……but after that my totals really drop. Surprised you have not seen Death of a Gunfighter…..it does not look (statistically) like a good movie…..maybe you will get a chance to see it soon. Sorry for the confusion yesterday….WoC did some changes this weekend to the database and the website…..and I was unaware that I was “working” in plain site…lol. Good feedback as always.

    2. Flora, I enjoyed every movie I have seen on your favorites list. thanks for including paint your wagon. one of my 100 all time favorites along with true grit and butch Cassidy and the sundance kid. for me not a lot of great movies in 69. midnight cowboy was too dark. I do not appreciate peckinpah and his wild bunch . did not enjoy carnal knowledge. hello dolly is good , not great. did not see Z. I enjoyed cactus flower and support your local sheriff and easy rider but not in my top 400 or my favourites.

      1. oops , I typed carnal knowlwdge when I meant bob and carol and ted and alice. doesn’t matter didn’t enjoy either one.

  4. Hey Flora…..actually still working on this page…somehow….the “publish” button got hit…….see you are seeing a work in progress…..by the time I am finished those bugs will be ironed out.
