  1. Hello Bruce
    So many films i saw in that year, and i am so lazy that i will not count them but my favorite films are Poseidon, Cabaret and its music numéros with Liza directly inspired by the Blue Angel with Dietrich and it is normal because it was Berlin;
    Sex by Woody and Sex by Linda were great moment too. And funny because in that time porn were in box office and everybody goes to see because it was just the beginning for the great public and it was simply new;
    In. The mean time i saw the Last Tango and i think it was very very difficult to see and not excited at all but very triste;
    I saw Fritz the Cat and i loved it like Frenzy and the Cow Boys with the Duke
    Good inspiration for memories but in that time everything was so easy to live…..
    I have to take another glass of Chablis
    So long
    Peter from France

    1. Hey Pierre. Thanks for checking in from France. Thanks for sharing your favorite movies and your memories from this year. Poseidon is among my favorites as well…..Cabaret is not among my favorite musicals….but I liked Liza in that role. I agree Everything About Sex has some funny moments…..my favorite is Burt Reynolds and Tony Randall controlling the brain….funny funny stuff. Hope your Chablis was good…..sounds like a good time…Chablis and 1972 movies…lol.

  2. 1972 The Year of the Godfather.

    I’ve seen 42 of the 136 films on the chart, less than I thought. I have 75 films from 1972 in my movie collection. I haven’t watched them all.

    I see hardcore porn has finally made it to the UMR – Deep Throat – which was a huge success and very profitable. The UK had strict censorship rules back then so I doubt it ever hit mainstream theaters here but it may have been covertly available in some of the more dodgy soft porn cinemas we had in London’s West End district.

    There was no beating The Godfather that year, over $700m adjusted domestic, which is about as much as Black Panther did this year. The Poseidon Adventure did very well too.

    I saw Elvis on Tour at the cinema in 1977 after Elvis died, a late night showing. I remember I was with a bunch of friends singing Elvis songs all night.

    I went thru a Bruce Lee / Kung Fu phase during the 70s and watched The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon a number of times in various double bills throughout the 70s. Enter the Dragon was my favorite of his films, I must have watched that well over a hundred times in the 70s and 80s.

    Another top movie page Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for checking out this page.
      2. I have seen 35….so I am trailing your 42.
      3. Yep….the year Godfather became a legend.
      4. I think there are actually 3 X rated movies on this table…Deep Throat, Pink Flamingos and Fritz The Cat…now that I think about there are 4…I just can’t remember the 4th one.
      5. When looking at adjusted gross….The Black Panther still needs about 8 million to top The Godfather….the producers are keeping The Black Panther in theaters until it reaches $700 million….it is playing in 140 theaters still……a couple more weeks and it will get there.
      6. Good story about you and your friends singing Elvis songs.
      7. Two Bruce Lee movies made the Top 30….just saw Birth of the Dragon the other day…..it was a decent Bruce Lee re-telling of a story from the 1960s.
      8. Thanks for the votes up…and for sharing these movie memories.

    1. Hey Dan. 105 is easily the most. Good lists as always. Looking at the movies and looking at movies on the table….they are probably the closest match yet when looking at these yearly reviews. I was happy we found so many of these movies….I was thinking some of the 1970 years were going to be difficult to find even 100 movies….hopefully….the rest of the 1970s will prove me work as well….we have now done 40% of this decade. Good information.

  4. And the trend continues where my total seen films dwindles away. I have seen 26 movies only from 1972.

    The highest rated film I have seen is Cabaret at number 2. That’s right. I have never seen The Godfather. I think Bruce and Steve already knew that. I have never been interersted in seeing any of the trilogy. The reasons are rather involved and probably best kept private beyond it being extremely violent. I have seen some violent movies where I am a fan of cast member.

    Of course, this is not the first year of these yearly reviews where I have not seen the number 1 movie.

    The lowest ranked film I have seen is One Is A Lonely Number at 124. I am surprised it is ranked so low. I did not think it was that bad.

    With only 26 movies seen, I am only going to list by tens my seen films up to the top 20.

    Top 10 Films Seen:
    6 out of 10 – I have seen Cabaret, The Poseidon Adventure, What’s Up, Doc?, Last Tango in Paris, The Getaway, and Sleuth

    11 out of 20 – I have seen Frenzy, Butterflies Are Free, The Cowboys, The Lifeand Times of Judge Roy Bean, and The Valachi Papers

    I have not seen the Richard Widmark movie When The Legends Die. It’s never been available to me.

    My Favourite Movies From 1972 are:

    Cabaret
    The Poseidon Adventure
    The Getaway
    Sleuth
    Travels With My Aunt
    Junior Bonner
    Butterflies Are Free
    Elvis On Tour

    1. Hey Flora
      1. You are correct….that tally is going down….but 26 is not too bad of a total…..I am at 35…..I thought it was going to be higher.
      2. Yep….I remember your reasons for not seeing The Godfather…..WoC is with you…she has never seen it either….I have tried a couple of times to get her to watch…..but she always gets bored with the movie.
      3. My first miss was #8 Lady Sings The Blues. You held your own on the Top 10 (60%) and the Top 20 (55%).
      4. Wow…a Richard Widmark movie that has escaped you….When the Legends Die (1972) actually got decent reviews.
      5. I have seen all of your favorites except for Travels With My Aunt…..Sleuth, Poseidon and The Getaway are among my favorites too.
      6. One Is A Lonely Number got some weak reviews….which really pulled down the score for that one.
      Great feedback as always.

  5. An interesting year in films. Hitchcock’s last good movie. The Godfather might be the best movie ever made. Deep Throat got people to theaters to see a porn movie. Cabaret was a musical like none earlier. Deliverance is one of the best thrillers ever made. Pink Flamingos might be the grossest movie ever made, which probably makes Divine happy. Pam Grier was becoming a star while John Wayne was headed to the finish line. This was a wonderful find. Thanks Phillip for sharing it.

    1. Hey Robin H. Thanks for checking out our 1972 yearly review….and thanks to Philip for sharing it with you. The Godfather is one of 11 movies that has a perfect 100 UMR score….so I agree with you. Deep Throat was a “cool” thing to see……I have seen documentaries on that movie….and the crowds were huge. Pink Flamingos is a very gross movie…never understood why so many people love that movie….it is listed in one of my favorite author’s book Cult Movies….but for me it was a one and done movie for me. Good thoughts…hope to see you again.
