Finding box office information for movies made before 1980 is not an easy task.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1973 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1973 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1973.  This page will looks at 135 1972 Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.    This only represents about 33% of the movies made in 1973….but should cover the top box office movies.

Our UMR Top 50 of 1973

One of my favorite 1973 movies is My Name Is Nobody

1973 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1973 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1973 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1973 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)

  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1973 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1973 Movies received.
  • Sort 1973 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Hello Bruce,

As always, I love your table by years.
I’ve seen 19 movies of this list, and my favorites are My Name Is Nobody, Silent Green (one of the best sci fi movie of all-time, I think. So much premonitory), Exorcist and High Plains Drifter.
In France Nobody, Exorcist, Sting, Way of Dragon and Trinita were big success.
The last one was à phenomenal box office hit in Europe. Particulary in Germany, where is still in top 20 since 50 years, and in Italy (one of the ten most successfull movies since 1945 in this country !) In only one year the second Trinita gross $25 millions in rental on the old continent.

    1. Hey Laurent. Thanks for checking out our 1973 page. Glad you enjoy them. We are quickly closing in on 50 straight years of UMR pages.

19 is a solid total, especially since many of these movies probably never saw French theaters. We are in agreeance on My Name Is Nobody…..love that movie.

Been years since I have seen the Trinity movies. I knew they were popular just not as popular as your
stats show. Great feedback. WoC is tired of driving….my turn to drive again.

  2. I saw 37 . sting 10/fav, papillon 10/fav, 3 musketeers 10/fav, exorcist 10, the way we were10 , godspell 8/fav. three musketeers is one of my top 10 all time favorite. hidden gem is the paper chase. wonderful year for movies and movie stars. thanks Dan, Flora ,Steve for sharing

    1. Hey Bob cox. Tally counts…your 37 would be good enough for 3rd place…behind me and Dan but ahead of Flora and Steve. The Paper Chase is a fun movie…with Houseman really shining. Lots of 10s here for you….I just saw the Papillon remake trailer today…why are they remaking that one. I agree, 1973 was filled with quality movies.

  3. I have seen 32 movies from 1973. That is up from my total in 1979 and other recent years completed.

The highest rated film I have seen is The Sting at number 1.

The lowest rated film I have seen is Lolly Madonna XXX at number 129.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is The Exorcist at number 3.

My Viewings by Tens: Up To Top 50
7 out of 10: The Sting, American Graffiti, Paper Moon, Papillion, Magnum Force, The Three Musketeers, The Way We Were

14 out of 20: The Day of the Jackal, Live and Let Die, Robin Hood, Jesus Christ Superstar, Westworld, High Plains Drifters, Cries and Whispers

    18 out of 30
    20 out of 40
    23 out of 50

    My Favourites of 1973 are:

    The Sting
    Badlands
    Jesus Christ Superstar
    The Way We Were
    The Three Musketeers
    The Day of the Jackal
    American Graffiti
    Robin Hood
    The Last of Sheila
    Westworld

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Tally count…Dan 53, me 41, bob cox 37, Steve 35 and you at 32….so yes your counts continue to decrease.
      2. 70 % of the Top 10 is pretty impressive. Only 9 of the final 85 seems like the way to do it…..as you are watching and avoiding the right movies….lol.
      3. I have seen 9 of your Top 10 favourites. Only Jesus Christ Superstar has escaped me.
      4. I made sure to include the Badlands trailer…as I know how much you like that movie.
      5. Glad to see you mention The Last of Sheila…..love that movie….sadly not many people seem to remember that movie.
      Great feedback as always.

  4. I’ve seen 35 of the 116 films on the chart, less than I thought. Looking at my files I have 62 films from 1973 in my movie collection. I haven’t watched them all.

    My favorites include –

    American Graffiti
Battle for the Planet of the Apes
    Cahill US Marshall
    Creeping Flesh ,The
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark
    Don’t Look Now
    Enter The Dragon
    Exorcist ,The
    Flesh for Frankenstein
    From Beyond the Grave
    Heavy Traffic
    High Plains Drifter
    Legend of Hell House
    Live and Let Die
    Magnum Force
    Mean Streets
    Robin Hood (Disney)
    Satanic Rites of Dracula
    Serpico
    Soylent Green
    Sting ,The
    Stone Killer ,The
    Theatre of Blood
    Three Musketeers ,The
    Train Robbers ,The
    Vault of Horror ,The
    Westworld
    Wicker Man ,The
zz-China – Beach of the War Gods
    zz-France – Fantastic Planet
    zz-Japan – Lady Snowblood

The Exorcist was far and away the most successful film of the year, followed by The Sting. I just wished the Oscar voters were a bit braver and voted for The Exorcist that year instead of the safe bet, The Sting.

I saw a bunch of these at the cinema, some of them in later reruns usually on a double bill, they include – The Exorcist (later rerun), Enter the Dragon (multiple times on rerun), Robin Hood, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Satanic Rites of Dracula (rerun), High Plains Drifter (double bill with Death Wish), Magnum Force (double bill with Dirty Harry), Live and Let Die and Westworld.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the visit, the tally and your thoughts on 1973 movies.
      2. I am at 41….so I barely beat your tally. Just re-watched, Battle for the Planet of the Apes….not the best Apes movie, and you can tell the franchise was running out of steam.
      3. We have lots of same favorite movies for this year….as Live and Let Die, Westworld, Wicker Man, Don’t Look Now and Solent Green are movies I watch pretty regularly.
      4. Yep The Sting was the safe bet…..I have only seen The Exorcist once…..while I have seen The Sting many many times….so I like their Oscar pick.
      Good feedback as always.

  5. Off the top of my head I remember seeing The World’s Greatest Athlete in the cinema. These are the 96 1973 films I have seen since December 1992 when I hit film 8000 that I have seen. Key – title, studio, stars if I listed, date seen and source (DVD, tape, TV channel)

Although films I’ve seen in 2018 are not logged till the end of the year I saw The All American Boy with Jon Voight a few weeks ago on Turner Classic Movies.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. So I tried to count how many of your 96 watched were on our table….think I got to 53….which would put you on top of our tally contest.
      2. So you have added a 97th movie to your list…very cool.
      3. Seems I saw The World’s Greatest Athlete in theaters too.
      4. Lots of good movies on your list.
      5. Like Flora’s totals….they seem to be getting lower and lower as we approach the 1980s.
Thanks as always for sharing this information.
