  1. I have seen 13 movies from 1986.

    The HIGHEST Rated film I have seen is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

    The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Platoon.

    The LOWEST rated film I have seen is Maximum Overdrive, which I saw at a birthday party three years later.

    Top 10 Movie I Have Seen:
    Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    A Room With a View
    Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which is the first “grown up” film I saw in the theatre
    The Color of Money

    Top Gun
    An American Tail
    Peggy Sue Got Married

    Other 1986 Movies I’ve Seen:
    Pretty in Pink
    Flight of the Navigator
    The Delta Force

    Heat
    Maximum Overdrive

    Favourite 1986 Movies:
    A Room With a View
    Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    An American Tail
    Top Gun
    The Color of Money
    Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

    1. Hey Flora
      1. As always…thanks for the feedback…it is greatly appreciated.
      2. Tally count. Cogerson 127, Steve 82 , bob cox 53, Flora 13.
      3. In bob cox’s comment he thought the year had “too many good movies and no great ones”….so I do not think you have missed too much……Platoon is very good…but very very intense.
      4. 40% of the Top 10 and 35% of the Top 20 is not too bad.
      5. Seen all of your favorites….with our best match being Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home….which is still my favorite Trek movie.
      Good feedback as always.

  2. I saw 53 including top 15. 10s and favorites: hoosiers, ferris buellers day off, aliens, stand by me, top gun. 10s not favorites: a room with a view, children of a lesser god. 9 and favourite: star trek IV. 9s not favorites: blue velvet(too weird to ever recommend), the fly, crocodile Dundee, platoon, color of money, the mission. hidden gems: highlander, night mother(dark with great performances), running scared, legal eagles, big easy, nothing in common, name of the rose, f/x, (all 8s) best of times , mona lisa, sid and nancy, (7’s worth a look if no 8’s available).

    very tough year to rate , only 6 cross the 100 mil barrier and 1 is karate kid part 2 with a 47%review and top gun with a 56 % review was number 1. second was crocodile Dundee with a 68% review and no Oscar nominations. I thinks its possible there were too many good movies and no great ones. UMR did well with a tough task.

    1. Hey bob cox. Tally count….Cogerson 127, Steve 82 and you at 53. I really like 60% of your Top 10s…Top Gun and Ferris Bueller are entertaining….but….I would not rate them that high. Lots of good movies in your 8s and 9s. I really liked Running Scared….it was a pretty decent hit back then….yet almost nobody talks about….I thought a sequel was coming….sadly it never did. I agree with you 100% about Blue Velvet….I would put The Fly in the same category. I like your assessment of “too many good movies and no great ones”. Good stuff.

  3. Hello girls, hello boys,
    I saw a lot but as usual i will not count them because it is too long
    My favorite picture without any questions is Alien the worst i saw is crocodile Dundee;
    I was in USA for the last month but i forgot my iPad so no comment from me for a moment; I was in LA, and it was terrible with fire around;
    When i look the bo of 1986 i saw the name of Steve Guttenberg, he was very popular in that days, and after three men and a baby what happen to him because he disappeared from the landscape of movie, in France , but in the mean time i dont know for USA.
    I see Manon a french movie with Emmanuelle Béart, good point for french cinéma;
    It is so rare that a French film is in the BO in america;
    Bruce, could you on the Dietrich page put two films like Around the world and Follow the boys, simpl because you put Hollywood canteen for some others, and it was just two or three minutes like cameos Dietrich in this two films;
    Anyway it coul be worst of course, it could be raining like now in France;
    IT is always good to come back home……
    Tchao
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre. That is cool that you were in the United States last month. Hope you enjoyed your visit. Glad to hear from you again. Steve Guttenberg was indeed very popular in the 1980s. He has pretty much been forgotten as the years have passed….but I remember seeing him in many popular comedies. Manon and Jean de Florette are well thought of here….so I like you was glad it earned some box office dollars here…..I like how those two movies work together. Sorry you did not like Paul Hogan’s Dundee….it took America by storm….and for awhile made Hogan a star…even hosting the Oscars. I will add those two Dietrich movies….just for you my friend. Hope the rain stops….once again…good hearing from you.

  4. I’ve seen 82 of the 207 films on the chart, normally I would find that impressive but seeing that Bruce has watched 127… and gawd knows how many Dan has watched…

    Looking at my files there are 78 films from 1986 in my movie collection, my favorites are –

    Aliens
    An American Tail
    Big Trouble in Little China
    Biggles
    Black Moon Rising

    Tough Guys
    Vamp
    Wraith ,The
    zz-China – Armour of God
    zz-China – A Better Tomorrow
    zz-Japan Anime – Castle in the Sky

    Good to see Aliens topping the critics chart, an all time favorite of mine. Platoon tops the UMR chart, my favorite Oliver Stone movie.

    Top rated films I haven’t seen include Hannah and her Sisters, and Hoosiers.

    Sad to see Highlander rated so low, a cult classic of the 80s, watched it a zillion times on video tape back then. Star Trek IV was a lot of fun and David Cronenberg’s The Fly is still his best film IMO, and one of the rare times a remake beats the original.

    Another epic movie year Bruce, a blast from the past, so many favorites from the 80s, the video era! We were rewinding VHS tapes endlessly, something we mercifully don’t have to do any more. And some video recorders were really noisy on rewind.

    Nice work. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….this was a fun page to put together…..this was one of the years I was an adult with no kids….so I went to and watched a lot of movies. 82 is pretty stout…..even if it trails me and Dan. I have seen all of your favorites…..though I am shaky if I saw all of The Great Mouse Detective….so I did not count it in my totals. Highlander got its audience on VHS days…for years it was a top renter. But it failed at the box office. Aliens is one of my all time favorites…so no arguing with your comment at all. Good stuff as always.

  5. Got some good totals for this page. Overall I have seen 127 of these movies….including 20 in theaters.

    Seen in theaters: Platoon, Star Trek IV, Back To School, Crocodile Dundee, Color Of Money, Stand By Me, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Running Scared, Heartbreak Ridge, Legal Eagles, Manhunter, Nothing In Common, Gung Ho, One Crazy Summer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Hitcher, Firewalker, Wildcats, Blue City and Club Paradise.

    My Favorites:
    Aliens…one of the best action movies ever made….one of my all-time favorites
    Crocodile Dundee…..fun movie…just watched it recently with one of my daughters
    The Hitcher…..a blast to see in theaters….poor Jennifer Jason Leigh
    House…..William Katt and a haunted house…need to re-watch
    Manhunter…good thriller….the orginal Hannibal Lector movie
    Nothing in Common….Tom Hanks’ breakthrough performance as a dramatic actor
    Platoon……great movie…has aged very nicely
    Ruthless People….first time I saw this one, I laughed so hard
    Something Wild….fell in love with Melanie Griffith in this one
    Stand By Me…..one of Rob Reiner’s better efforts
    Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home….fun Star Trek movies…it’s the whale one

    I was working at House of Video in 1986…one of the perks was watching two movies a day back then….those were the days.

    1. Cogerson, I am disappointed Hannah and her sisters(second best 86 reviewed) did not make your favorites list, “you know who” is in it, rhymes with paine. I agree platoon way too intense for me , a downer. aliens , truly great,is top 5 all time action with die hard, terminator 2, pulp fiction, Indiana jones and the last crusade.
