1990 Movies

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1990.  Obviously many movies made in 1989 earned box office dollars in 1990.  On the other side many movies made in 1990 made money in 1991 and later.   This page will looks at over 200 movies made in 1990.  The movies are listed in two massive tables that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

1990 Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

  • Sort 1990 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)

  1. 73 Duck Tales: The Movie (1990)

The Title may be DuckTales: The Movie – Treasure of the Lost Lamp
    [No space in “Duck Tales”]

  2. I saw 52. including top 13. 10s and favorites: dances with wolves, hunt for red October, pretty woman. 10 not favourite: home alone. 9s and favorites: It, pump up the volume, Quigley down under, Rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead. hidden gems: hamlet 8, Russia house 8, green card 8, grifters 8, long walk home 9, reversal of fortune 8. great page, great year

    1. Hey bob cox….52 1990 movies would put you in 4th place….trailing…Dan, Steve and me…..but it is still an impressive total. 4 10s is pretty good. I agree with you about The Grifters being a hidden gem….love the movie…except for the ending. Not sure if you have seen them or not….but Quick Change and A Shock To The System would be in my hidden gems.

So….looking at your comment….there is no mention of Goodfellas. So…have you not seen that one?….if so….shocking. If you did not like it?….if so….shocking. Good stuff as always.

      1. I almost explained goodfellas omission in my comment but decided not to. I am not a gangster film lover. I loved the first 2 godfathers but I had read the book, I love pacino, deniro, duvall, Keaton. I appreciate brando and the supporting cast. the plot was superb, the dialogue and character development were great, the acting perfect, the directing great. the killing and violence was sensible for psychopathic murderers.
goodfellas not so much. liottas and pescis performances were great. I thought deniro was not at his best. the killing was horrific and nonsensible. it was probably much truer to mob life since 1960 when most mobsters/psychopaths joined the drug culture . others generally accepted as great that I downrate due to violence that does not contribute to plot and nonsensical killing: scarface, prizzis honor, white heat, and most tarantino directed movies.
you will not find these in my favorites and rarely in my 10s. goodfellas was a 9.
I do not mind violence or killing if it makes sense and fits with a good plot. I like john wick and kill bill. just psychopaths killing nonsensically gets downrated. I almost downrated pulp fiction but could not. still I would not recommend it to 90% of my friends.

        1. Hey bob cox…..thanks for explaining the absence of Goodfellas……it now makes sense. Well…we can not agree on everything….that would be boring…..lol. Good points throughout your comment….thanks for sharing it. Good stuff.

    1. Hey Dan…..in the last few yearly reviews…I have gotten somewhat close to your totals….but 1990 you destroy my tallies…especially in the movies seen in theaters….I did not go to many movies in theaters….I saw most of these movies on VHS…those were the days.

You can not argue with Goodfellas as being the best movie of the year. It is a great movie, and a great movie that is aging well. Time has not been too kind to Dances With Wolves…..when people talk about movies made in 1990….Goodfellas is the one they want to talk about.

As always….your record keeping skills are truly impressive. Thanks as always for sharing this information. Remember…..you ….are ……the …..MAN!

  4. I have seen 20 movies from 1990. Most of them are in the top 20.

The HIGHEST ranked movie I have seen is Dances With Wolves.

The highest ranked movie I have NOT seen is Goodfellas.

The LOWEST ranked movie I have seen is Cadence.

Top 10 Movie I Have Seen:

    Dances With Wolves

    Dick Tracy
    Awakenings

Top 20 Movies I Have Seen:

    Favourite 1990 Movies:

    Ghost
    Pretty Woman
    The Hunt For Red October

    Days of Thunder
    Dances With Wolves
    The Russia House

Other 1990 Movies I Have Seen:

    Dick Tracy
    Awakenings
Back to the Future III(not as good as the first two)
    Home Alone
    Misery
    Postcards From the Edge
    Reversal of Fortune
    Bird on a Wire
    Pump Up the Volume
    Mr. and Mrs. Bridge
    Young Guns II
Lord of the Flies – saw film and read the book for English; hated both
    Cadence

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for sharing your input into our 1990 yearly review. I imagine each year will offer less and less appeal to you……so I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. 20 is (I think) slightly less than your 1989 total…I imagine that total will continue to slide the closer we get to connecting the gap between 1991 and 2010…..amazingly….all the years from 1928 to 2019 are complete.

Seen all of your favorites….with the exception of The Russia House….liked all of them too. Dances With Wolves is not my favorite Best Picture Oscar Winning Movie……but I like the story….I can not believe that movie is already 29 years old.

Mr. and Mrs. Bridge is one of the few Paul Newman movies that I have not seen….at least of the ones he made after the 1960s….got a handful of his 1950s movies to track down. Seeing it is not on your favorites list…makes me think…I am not missing too much. Good feedback…as always.

      1. I see by Bob Cox’s comment that I missed listing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I saw that in school after we read it in English. Therefore, my total is 21.

        1. oops. I do not find Rosencrantz and guildenstern in 1990 on UMR. I must have it from my letterboxd account. I apologize Flora and Cogerson.

          1. Hey bob cox….you and Letterboxd are correct on the year of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern…..it has now been fixed in my database and on this page. Good catch!

        2. Hey Flora…that was an error on my part..Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was made in 1990 and released in 1991. My database had it made in 1991……it has since been fixed…and now sits in the 111th range on this table. A few movies have gotten through like this…WoC has the computer programmed to use the release year as the year when certain factors are missing…which in this case they were indeed missing…so it made it 1991. Long way of saving…our mistake…but it is fixed.

  5. I’ve seen 97 of the 221 films on the chart. Might be more but those I know for sure I’ve watched. Looking at my files I have 94 films from 1990 in my movie collection.
    My favorites include –

    Arachnophobia
    Back to the Future III
    Class of 1999
    Dances With Wolves
Dark Angel (aka I Come in Peace)
    Darkman
    Desperate Hours.
    Dick Tracy
    Die Hard 2
    Edward Scissorhands
    Exorcist III
    Flatliners
    Frankenstein Unbound
    Ghost
    Godfather III
    Goodfellas
    Gremlins 2
    Hard to Kill
    Hardware
    Home Alone
    Hunt for Red October ,The
    Internal Affairs
    Joe vs The Volcano
    Marked for Death
    Moon 44
    Night of the Living Dead.
    Nightbreed
    Predator 2
    Pretty Woman
    Quigley Down Under
    Rescuers Down Under
    Robocop 2
    State of Grace
    Total Recall
    Tremors
    Young Guns II
    zz-China – A Bullet in the Head
    zz-France – La Femme Nikita

For a while it looked like Ghost would be the number one film of 1990 and than along came Home Alone in December. I think at the time it was the biggest grossing comedy of all time? Or should that be Beverly Hills Cop? Animal House?

Good stuff Bruce. Epic page. Vote uP!

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for the comment, tally and visit on our latest year review….as we take our second step into the 1990s. I have seen 112 of these movies….so our tally counts are pretty close. It looks like I did not see many movies in the theater that year…..at that point in my life…I was finishing college….working on the night shift….and had just gotten married and had a kid…..that did not allow alot of time to see movies.

I do remember after seeing Misery in theaters….we came home….and I had to get something out of the attic…..up in the attic….I was thinking about the movie….and totally freaked myself out….and had to get out of the attic. The attic…looked a lot like the room James Caan found himself in.

I remember when Home Alone took the world by storm….back then you had to get your box office information in USA Today (a national paper here in the states)…..Home Alone opened against Rambo 3. I could not believe my eyes, on that Monday morning, when I saw that Macaulay Culkin had not only beaten Stallone …but destroyed Stallone during their opening weekends.

With the exception of Frankie Unbound, A Bulllet to the Head and Quigley Down Under…I have seen and enjoyed all of your favorites. Some of my favorites not on your list would include Michael Caine’s A Shock To The System, Bill Murray’s Quick Change (watch this one pretty often), and Miller’s Crossing (Danny Peary of the Cult Movies thinks this is the best movie of 1990).

When looking at adjusted grosses….it looks like Ghostbusters would have that honor…..just looking at actual grosses…the DeadPool movies would be near the top of that list…though…there seem to be many many versions of what a comedy movie is.

      Good stuff!
