Our 2018 Winner – For The 2nd Time in 3 Years – Mr. Cary Grant
In order to win Cary Grant had to take down, in order, Jack Lemmon, Matt Damon, Spencer Tracy, James Stewart, Clark Gable and Gregory Peck.
Welcome to our 5th Annual UMR Movie Tournament. Usually we do this tournament in March. That usually coincides with the NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament. This year the UMR website was having some major technical issues during March and we never got around to doing the tournament. That has been bugging me for the last 7 months….so to scratch that itch…here is our 2018 UMR tournament.
The rules to qualify for the tournament: Actor/actress had to star in at least 30 movies and be ranked in the Top 64 when looking at the average Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score for their movies. The higher the UMR average the higher the rankings. Previous winners are put into the same bracket….sorry Bogart, Tracy, Grant and Stewart fans….but going to make them work to repeat!
The rules to advance to the next round: The first four rounds are a best-of-five movie matchup. The last two rounds (Final Four & Finals) are a best-of-seven. Using a random number generator each actor/actress’ movie is drawn from their Top 30 UMR rated movies. The movie with the higher UMR score wins that matchup. First one to either 3 or 4 wins moves to the next round. Movie can only be used once for the entire tournament….which is why 30 movies is the minimum to qualify for the tournament. This continues until only one actor/actress is left.

2 days into our UMR tournament….and we are down to 16 contenders. One number seed #1 Tom Hanks has been eliminated. Two number #12 seeds remain….Maureen O’Hara and Fredric March. Of the four previous winners…..3 still remain (Grant, Stewart and Tracy) while Bogart got bounced in the first round.

Only 7 months late….but finally started to play our UMR movie tournament. This is the 5th year I have done this…and 3rd year I have shared on the website the progress of tournament. Started with 64 legends….after round 1…down to 32 legends. Some big ones fell in round one….Humphrey Bogart, Bob Hope, Michael Caine, Katharine Hepburn, Bing Crosby, Charlton Heston and Jack Nicholson…just to name a few. Bruce Willis did not even get invited to the game this year.
