2020 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

    • Sort 2020 Movies by the star or stars of the 2020 Movies listed in table
    • Sort 2020 Movies by domestic box office grosses
    • Sort 2020 Movies by wordwide box office grosses
    • Sort by how 2020 Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
    • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each 2020 Movies received….this column will remain 00 / 00 until next February.
    • Sort 2020 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
    • Green highlight means the movie is still in theaters and still earning UMR points

  1. A horrible year for theaters. Near me Connecticut is offering movies now and New Jersey starts Friday. Unfortunately our governor has no intention of opening cinemas . Yesterday the governor announced no indoor dining until they get thru flu season which would be about May 2021. The mayor doesn’t want anything open till a vaccine is found. These 2 are destroying numerous businesses than the mayor complains he doesn’t understand why people are leaving. He believes restaurants are for rich people. They asked him what about the workers in these restaurants. He says if they can a burger or a slice of pizza they too are rich and won’t be missed if they leave.

I have seen the follwing 2020’s on your list.

    1-7,10,13-16, 18,19,24,25,27,29,32,34,37,43,44,45,49,55,57,59,61,63,64,66,70,73-75,77,82,91,92.

    That’s a grand total of 40.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing how things are in New York these days. We actually have a few theaters open currently in my area. That being said WoC wants nothing to do with them. My son and I are debating seeing Tenet this weekend….that is assuming it opens in my area. I was pleasantly surprised that The New Mutants opened so high. Maybe can get close to 20 million.

As for 2020 movies…I agree…I horrible year for theaters. I have seen 31 of these movies….actually not too far behind your total. I watched The King Of Statten Island last night…it was ok….but the first half was pretty slow. I see you have missed #8 Palm Springs…I liked that one…and it is growing on me as time passes. Good information.

  2. Halfway through the year….and this yearly page looks so sad….as the Covid19 is creating a movie year that has never been seen before. Seen 23 of these movies.

  3. I hate to be the bearer of bide tidings, but unfortunately the covid shelter in place is driving movies out of theaters (not to mention “going concern” issues among major theater companies) and into direct streaming avenues like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple and the like. How will this be impacting their inclusion in your lists that typically require box office results? Would you consider a moderate departure this year and include them based upon ratings like IMDB and RT as well as Oscar nominations. I would hate to see the utility of your efforts be lost to the void of these terrible events. Please consider some kind of rule change to give us a better list of movies for 2020. Thanks again. PS. I hope you and all the other fans a healthy recovery. If you do get COVID track down the Harry Potter author’s youtube video advice about UK doctor coaching breathing and coughing patterns and laying on your stomach and not back.

    1. Hey Sidney. Thanks for the comment and the concern. Video on Demand is something WoC and I have been thinking about for awhile. Luckily box office grosses is just one element of our formula. So…..if the Coronavirus does in fact kill the movie theater business…..I suspect the reporting of VOD sales and streaming rentals will become mainstream. Right now Netflix likes to keep their stats secret….but I suspect in time….they will realize that showing the numbers is a great way to get free publicity.

Once that happens, then we here at UMR will figure out a way to merge the numbers….pretty much how we merged rental numbers with box office gross numbers. It will not be a perfect science….but with lots of tweaks…we should get in the neighborhood……which is our claim today.

A couple of weeks ago, we did launch a new feature…..if a movie was released straight to a streaming or paid service (HBO) we are now including those movies with the stars. In 2019 we have about 10 movies that meet this criteria…..and we already have 6 on the 2020 page. We are going back an adding in movies from HBO…..movies like Glitter Dome will soon be on James Garner’s page.

We have had to put the box office at the lowest total for my database to recognize it, but reviews and awards allow you to sort by those totals. In the end…..to stay current we will have to keep changing with the times. All that being said….I suspect….movie theaters are not dead yet…..once this nightmare ends….going to theaters will be something the general public wants to do. Thanks again for the feedback.

    1. Hey Taylor. Created this one….not ready to share it….as it has a few bugs in the table that I need to fix. Thanks for the mini-review on Fantasy Island, a lady I work with thought the same thing.
