December 26th – Just realized we made another mistake!

  1.  First of all….hope everybody had wonderful holiday.

2.  Ok….this morning I was updating our Jack Lemmon page (see the last post). When I was noticing that many of his movies had “no box office rentals” listed in the database.  Instead….in the box office total section the only box listed was “adjusted gross”.

3.  At first I thought…”That is weird that Box Office Mojo had so many of Lemmon’s pre 1980 movies listed”.  As I neared the end of the update….I remembered what happened and what I did wrong!

4.  So faithful readers….jump in the UMR time machine and let’s go back to 2011 and say hello to Hurricane Irene.  When Hurricane Irene hit our area it took out the power for about 24 hours.  During that power outage…..we lost the last 5 or 6 movie subjects we had researched.  At the time I was not concerned about losing all the research on those pages….because the published pages were alive and well on HubPages.com…..just the information was gone forever in our database.

5.  Back into the UMR time machine…as we go to 2013.  After getting frustrated with HubPages….we decided to start our own website…CogersonMovieScore.com (CMS.com).  This required us to transfer all the pages from HubPages to CMS.com.  Lots of work….but made easier because all of the stats were in the database…..EXCEPT….for the 5 or 6 that got lost in Hurricane Irene.

6.  When I got to those missing pages….I took a SHORTCUT…..using the still published HubPages….I quickly transferred the information for HubPages to the database.  This was quicker….but it only brought back the final numbers …..not the numbers in the equation.  So instead of having all the sources for our critic/audience rating….we now only had the final score.  Instead of having box office rental numbers…and actual gross…..we only had adjusted gross for all of those movies.

7.  Back into the UMR time machine…as we go to 2016.  After another website provider switch…we decided to change our box office calculation formula.  This meant we had to update every page we had ever written….but to do this update we NEEDED box office rental numbers.  For 98% of the pages, those numbers were in the database, and were not a problem.  For the missing Hurricane Irene page this was a major issue.  Of the missing 5 or 6 pages….I know I have updated some of the missing pages (Gary Cooper & James Garner) using the wrong number.  This means….I will (a) have to update the Cooper and Garner pages yet again….and (b) figure out the other couple of pages that could have the error.

8.  For Gary Cooper fans…this could be good news as his already pretty impressive $9.94 billion box office career total should be improving even more…..enough to catch Clark Gable for third place? Maybe.  Good news is….with the Jack Lemmon page being fixed on the update…..that this problem is already either 20% or 16% fixed already.

Probably too much information……but in my world…..this was a pretty big mistake.

  1. I’m now sitting quaking in case the missing pages are my idols like for example Widmark, Peck Stewart or Laddie and you actually reduce their figure. Won’t sleep till it’s sorted. I’ll let John worry about Cooper.

    1. Most of your favorites are safe……though it looks like Brando will be taking another hit when it comes to career box office….lol. Actually it appears it was only 4……Gene Hackman, James Garner, Jack Lemmon and Gary Cooper. All were from the HubPages days. I think I have fixed most of Hackman’s numbers…..all of Lemmon’s numbers….and Garner and Cooper are back on the list for yet another update. I have come to realize that I will never ever be done updating these pages.

    1. Hey Helakoski…..I got long winded….but I felt that I should explain all the moving parts….thanks for reading….and for commenting.
