Since we are traveling for the next 6 days…..the I am still alive post of the day will have no pictures and no links….at least until we make it to my sister-in-laws house.
In 2016 I watched 541 movies. 80 of the movies were made in 2016. That means 461 of the movies I watched were older than 2016. So using my Letterboxd.com account I pulled out the Top 12 movies that I watched in 2016 and enjoyed the most. Year of release was not relevant. The rule was it had to be new to me …..none of my all-time favorites that I watch every year we’re included…..sorry A Bridge Too Far and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

In 2016 I saw 764 new movies to me of which 303 were 2016 releases. 154 were seen in the theaters and 149 on DVD or TV. That was a big jump in films from last year, thanks to Time Warner giving us Starz, Showtime and EPIX. This year I only gave 2 films four stars and I’ve been doing this since 1980. Usually I give about 6 to 10. So here are my 10 best of the year seen this year followed by some honorable mentions. Not listed is the Revenant a 2015 I only saw in 2016 which I give 3 1/2 stars or 7 out of 10 on the IMDB. Nor does it count Assasin’s Creed which I saw today and gave 1 star (makes no sense to me). I have not seen La La Land, Patriots Day, Hidden Figures or Silence yet . And now drumroll;
1 RACE FOCUS

My wife saw about 60 films from this year. Her favorites included Sully, Lion, Lady in the Van (2015 seen in 2016), Jackie and Don’t Think Twice.
Hey Dan. That is a ton of movies seen at the theaters. You must have a job that requires you to see that many movies? Movie critic? Work n a theater? Or just a serious put me to shame movie buff? Good top movies of the year…will comment on this comment when I get home. Last stop before home….a very long day.
No, just retired. Worked in music licensing for 15 years, worked on overseas television for 10 years. Went to 800 or so movies I think in 1992 when I first had cable. Also have been down in the 300’s for a few years when I worked and Cablevision which I had where I lived had limited channels. Like when TCM started, Cablevision didn’t carry it at that time. TNT used to run all the old movies till Ted Turner started TCM so had no access to them. When I moved from the Bronx to Queens we got TCM, and Encore Westerns (don’t get that one now by choice) etc.
Hey Dan….thanks for the information. My peak years of watching movies was in 2013 when I watched 1,418 movies….https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/how-and-why-i-watched-1418-movies-in-2013/…then in 2014….I decided to watch a movie every day of the year….I accomplished that and watched over 1,000 movies that year….then in 2015 I dropped to about 750…..and last year it went down to 541. Off to a bad start in 2017…3 days in and I have only watched Chisum
Sounds like you are a serious TCM fan…..amazingly….I do not even know what channel TCM is in my area….though….through Flora’s comments….many of the movies on my list of movies to watch play on TCM….one day…I will check out that station….I get most of my movies from the library….and walk on a treadmill as I watch them.
It must have been nice to have a job in the entertainment business….the closest I got was working at Arbitron Ratings….which did the surveys to determine what people were watching and listening to in the local areas.
🙂
I remember when I was about 20 and had lost interest in TV (I told you I did ratings in high school) either Arbitron or Nielsen called us up and paid us about $7 in cash and U.S. postage stamps to keep a diary for one week. I wrote what my mother watched and I didn’t watch any TV that week.
Hey Dan…..that is exactly how it worked….I worked my way through college at Arbitron. It was actually a high pressure job…..even though we paid for the information…..people always thought it was a scam.
Hey Dan.
1. Thanks for your top movies of the year….of the 21 you mentioned….I have seen….Sully, Rogue One, Rise, Finest Hours, Eddie The Eagle, Man Who Knew Infinity, Remember, Deadpool and Race. I really want to see Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester by the Sea, Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts. Our little ones have been begging to see Sing over winter break…somehow we have managed to NOT take them.
We have two of the same Top 10…Deadpool and Sully….which I only had 5 2016 movies…..so that is 40% when looking at the five. I really enjoyed Finest Hours and Race….and Remember blew me away…Plummer is excellent and Landau is sneaky good…..in a movie that will have you looking at Landau’s performance like it was the first time you saw the movie.
Thanks for your wife’s Top movies…..my wife really enjoyed Sully, The Jungle Book, Zootopia and Deepwater Horizon.
Great comment…fun talking movies with you.
Taste of Fear was a good psychological thriller, Hammer did a bunch of those in the early 60s thanks to the success of Hitchcock’s Psycho. But Christopher Lee has been in far better films and had far better roles than that one.
I saw Hell or High Water, similar in tone to the Coens No Country for Old Men but without the creepy killer. Jeff Bridges was good as always and you can understand some of what he was saying in this one. 🙂
Yeah I shouldn’t be nasty to dear old Clint, I was a huge fan back in the 70s. And those westerns he made are among my all time favorites.
Hey Steve….thanks for checking out our Top Films 2016. This has actually moved to 13 since you first commented as I realized I left off Hell or High Water. Sorry you did not like Sully….I think you are being a little tough on Clint….I think for sure that this was the best movie directed by an 86 year old this year.
I actually think that Star Trek Beyond might be my favorite movie of the year….still trying to figure out why it did not do as well as previous Star Trek movies. Deadpool is a close second for sure. I want to see Snowden…….but I JGL was really good in The Walk. On the classic side….I remember that the Hammer film…Taste of Fear really surprised me…I read that Christopher Lee thought it was the best movie he made….so I think the two of us agree on that…lol.
Of the ones you missed…I highly recommend all of them….Cranston is great in one of them….one is a classic from that awesome 1939 movie and year and the last one has to be seen to be believed. Thanks for the movie thoughts.
An interesting list Bruce. I’ve seen 9 of those films, the ones I’ve missed are The Infiltrator, Midnight and What We do in the Shadows. Good to see Deadpool listed, I enjoyed that a lot too. Other favorites – Star Trek Beyond and The Jungle Book.
I wasn’t that impressed with Sully but then you’re a huge fan of Hanks. I hope Inferno is better. Clint Eastwood hasn’t directed a good film since The Outlaw Josey Wales [cue gasps and a fainting in the back row] okay okay Unforgiven was pretty good.
I watched Gordon-Levitt recently in Snowden. The film wasn’t great but Levitt was good. I like him. Eye in the Sky was good too.
