In 2016 I watched 541 movies. 80 of the movies were made in 2016. That means 461 of the movies I watched were older than 2016. So using my Letterboxd.com account I pulled out the Top 10 movies that I watched in 2016 and enjoyed the least….in alphabetical order.
- Army of One (2016) Nicolas Cage reaches all-time career low
- The Boss (2016) Melissa McCarthy in a not funny comedy
- By The Sea (2015) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in a movie about a married couple in trouble….slow moving and boring
- The Forest (2016) bad even for a horror movie…which normally do not have a high bar anyway
- Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) Jeff Goldblum…..one of the worst sequels ever
- Magic Mike XXL (2015) Channing Tatum….Male strippers just wanna have fun….truly a dumb movie
- Minions (2015) Sandra Bullock….kids loved it…I could not wait for it to end
- Norm of the North (2016)…..this computer animated movie bored my kids even more than it bored me
- We Are Your Friends (2015) Zac Efron….a silly drama filled with many characters you will not like
- Zoolander 2 (2016) Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson…..loved Zoolander…really disappointed in this one….Stiller forgot to bring the funny to the movie

And now the worst. 2 pictures I gave 0 and 4 half a star. The worst;
1 OUTLAWS AND ANGELS
2 ARRIVAL
3 URGE
4 MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE (more Diary of a Wimpy Kid type stuff)
5 BOO! A MEDEA HALLOWEEN
6 ASIAN CONNECTION (Steven Seagal)
Arrival is my wife’s worst picture. Boring as can be.
Dishonorable mention (1 star epics, 2/10 on IMDB) in order that I watched them.
400 DAYS
REGRESSION (Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson)
KUNG FU PANDA 3 (so anticipating Cars 3 – NOT)
DIABLO (stars Clint Eastwood’s son Scott. Clint’s daughter Francesca is in our worst film of the year)
THE LOBSTER (Colin Farrell)
THE WITCH
JERUZALEM
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY (Weinstein film went right to Netflix)
THE BOY
LAZER TEAM (Wow, a Youtube movie)
SYNCHRONICITY
MEET THE BLACKS (actually worse than 50 Shades of Black)
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
HARDCORE HENRY (Lady in the Lake type film for this generation)
EXPOSED (Yes Keanu Reeves still works)
NINA FOREVER
OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR
KEANU (awful kitten film)
JANE GOT A GUN (Natalie Portman western)
PANDEMIC
HIGH-RISE (Jeremy Irons)
THE TRUST (Nicolas Cage epic)
SHOWDOWN IN MANILA
LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (Kate Beckinsdale arty stuff)
TRUE DECEPTION
ANDRON (Alec Baldwin)
GRIDLOCKED
THE DARKNESS
DUDES & DRAGONS
LAST HEIST
QUEEN OF THE DESERT (Nicole Kidman)
INDEPENDENTS’DAY (Asylum rip-off mockbuster)
A.R.C.H.I.E!
PURGE: ELECTION YEAR
KIDNAPPED IN ROMANIA
SUICIDE SQUAD (I know it made a lot of money but blah)
LIGHTS OUT
CHOSEN
THE CORRESPONDENCE (Jeremy Irons again – luckily Assassin’s Creed was seen in 17 or he’d be 3 for 3)
MORGAN
ADVENTURES OF PANDA WARRIOR (ripoff of Kung Fu You Know What)
FIGHT VALLEY
BLAIR WITCH
DESPITE THE FALLING SNOW
KILLING SALAZAR (Yes Steven Segall again)
NEON DEMON (One of those Fanning girls)
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES (Masterminds wasn’t much better also with Zack substitute long last name starting with G)
TRANSPECOS
SHUT-IN (Naomi Watts supposed horror flic)
BURNING BODHI
LIFE ON THE LINE (Could this be the worst John Travolta movie ever made)
NO STRANGER THAN LOVE
KEVIN HART: WHAT NOW
UNDRAFTED
RESCUE DOGS
KINGSGAINE: FINAL FANTASY V
PERFECT WEAPON (3 for 3 for Steven Seagal)
WHY HIM (despicable useless comedy, Bryan Cranston should know better. Also has Keegan Michael-Kay topping his breathtaking performnce in Keanu).
HOWARD LOVECRAFT & THE FROZEN KINGDOM
Hey Dan……great list of “bad” movies.
1. Of your first 6…..I have seen 1….Arrival….my wife and I really liked that movie….in many ways it reminded me of the Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. novel Slaughter House Five (my all-time favorite novel)…..so we are not on the same side of thinking there.
2. Of the 2nd long list…..the ones I have seen and sort of liked would include The Boy (I am not a horror fan…..but I liked that one), Midnight Special (I am huge Michael Shannon fan…and would probably enjoy him reading the phone book) and Jane Got A Gun (I thought it was an ok western).
3. Of the 2nd long list….I agree with you 100% on Neon Demon (awful awful), Meet The Blacks (worst reviewed movie of the year….brutal to watch), Suicide Squad (was in the running to make my Top 10 worst movies) and The Lobster (I actually liked the first part….but when Colin goes to the woods…the movie falls apart).
Greatly appreciate you sharing this information. You are truly a movie buff…..I have actually gone a whole week without watching a movie…..my arms are beginning to shake….lol.
Some bad movies here. Though I thought Zoolander 2 had some nice moments. The worst movie I saw this year was Suicide Squad.
Hey Stein….I agree Zoolander 2 had a few nice moments. I actually enjoyed Sting in the movie…..but those moments were few and far between. Suicide Squad was in the running…..but it was not bad enough to make this list. Thanks for checking out our post.
Of the 10 films you’ve listed I’ve only seen 4 – The Forest, Independence Day 2, Minions and Zoolander 2.
Independence Day 2 was a big disappointment, they waited too long and screwed it up, audiences stayed away. I still bought it on 3D blu-ray though, I’ll buy anything in sci-fi. I even bought Jupiter Ascending [Bruce winces].
Hollywood Reporter had a list of the biggest ‘Bombs’ of the year and how much money the studios lost on them, they left out Independence Day though, was it profitable?

Hey Steve.
1. Wow…it is very hard to find an open computer at brother-in-law’s house…..but currently I have access…I feel special.
2. Thanks for the link….interesting that they did not mention ID2….maybe it’s pretty decent worldwide gross saved the day…..or they forgot it. If I had to guess….I would go with they forgot it….because I think it cost a bit of money to make….even if it was so bad.
3. Not thinking you will like any of the 6 you have not seen. I just saw Cage in Army of One…..it is so bad…you will feel sorry for Cage.
4. ID2 and Jupiter Ascending….sounds like a good double feature.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
