After a month of hard work…..pretty much our upgrade is complete…..here are the 9 changes (both good and bad) explained.
- The Ranking Column: This is actually one of the changes I do not like as much. Previously the rank stayed in the correct order no what which column you sorted the information. Now the rank is our UMR score rank and it moves all over the place when sorting. Still….at one point during the upgrade we did not have a rank at all….so the current situation is better than nothing.
2. The Search Box: When we moved from a static to a dynamic website…we had to change tables….well….the new table’s search capability was horrible compared to the old table’s search capability. After ditching the new search button WoC found this one…which sadly does not even say it is a search box……But like the Ranking Column it is better than nothing. Ok….that is all the bad stuff….the rest is all supercool!
3. Oscar Winners: All major Oscar winners (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actor & Actress and Writing) will have a Gold tag listed directly under the movie.
4. Oscar Nominees: All major Oscar nominees (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actor & Actress and Writing) will have a Silver tag listed directly under the movie.
5. Movies Still In Theaters or New To The Table: If a movie is still in theaters or new to the table it will be given a green row. Mainly this will be on new movies….but every once in awhile a classic page will get a new addition. Right now, two recently discovered box office grosses on John Wayne movies have joined his table and they have green rows.
6. Blue Rows: The previous tables were all white….the new tables will have a blue row on every other line.
7. New Movie Links: One of my favorite additions….whenever you see a movie title with a link….that means we have a UMR page on that movie. Click on the link…..and you will see some pretty interesting information. For example if you click The Towering Inferno….this is one of the pieces of information that will pop up.
8. New Way To Calculate UMR Score: One of the biggest complaints we got about our website was on the fact that our UMR Score did not make much sense. A movie that had a 60 old UMR Score was actually a pretty good movie….but when somebody saw a 60 they would say…..”60 is not a good score”. So to make our UMR Score more understandable when are now using percentiles. Now the scores match better with your typical grading schedule.
9. Dynamic Website: After talking about it for years…..our website is now attached to our movie database…..we change something in our database…..and it is automatically updated to the website. I can tell you two things: (1) It is awesome……and (2) As awesome as it is…..it is nothing compared to WoC. WoC has put many many hours to make this happen. Thank you so much.
Why did you do away with the box-office tallies from the year-of-release? I have been using many of your figures on my blog Movies Ala Mark (moviesalamark.com) and juxtapose them when I feel warranted with Wiki and other sources. It does on occasion throw me when I see variances as wide as Victor Mature’s “Zarak”, which you post as #76 and Wiki’s list puts it at #15. ??? (I do love your site)
Hey Mark….On all the yearly reports (at least I hope) every movie has the actual gross (estimation of course). I checked a few of the years…and they all had the information. That is 1936 through 1952, 1959 and 1976. Granted some of the “actor” or “actress” pages lost that column….but that was only a handful.
I of course am willing to share specific performers if you want….just leave a comment….and I will share what I have. With mobile devices making up almost 45% of my traffic…I have had to reduce the number of columns we list…as we generally have more stats. Just let me know which person you are interested in….and I will share the information.
Hmmmmm Zarak…my 1958 Variety 1957 yearly review puts at the 70th biggest hit of 1957….my database now has it at 79……I am thinking it is way off. I have a lot more faith in my numbers than Wiki…..in this case.
Thanks for the return visit. I checked out and liked your website….keep up the good work. Plus I am sharing the link….https://thane62.wordpress.com/
I miss the search box but the update/upgrade/remodel looks nice. Like the Oscar links and the new scoring makes a lot more sense. You and WoC have done impressive work.
Hey In The Shadows….I miss it too…..but there are so many other great new things here….I think I will quickly forget about that box. Thanks for the nice words for me and WoC.
Round of applause to you and your team.
Thank you Taylor….it is greatly appreciated.
This awesome. Made your website even better. Love the changes. Thanks for letting me know that the second Movie box is the search box.
Hey SteinHOF….good to hear from you….it has been awhile. The new search box is almost invisible….hopefully regular readers will find that hidden treasure.
