Cogerson Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Why I watched this one? Numerous reasons: (1) This movie has some serious Oscar buzz. (2) It won 4 Golden Globes…including Best Picture. (3) I like Sam Rockwell….this was the 32nd Rockwell movie that I have seen. (4) Trailers looked interesting.

What is this one about? A mother (Frances McDormand) personally challenges the local authorities (Woody Harrelson & Sam Rockwell) to solve her daughter’s murder when they fail to catch the culprit.

My thoughts on this one? I knew immediately that this is a good movie. But it actually took a few days to determine if I liked the movie or not. My wife quickly decided that she did not like the movie.

The Good: 1. The performances are outstanding. Movie does a wonderful job of giving EVERY character in the movie something memorable. 2. McDormand, Harrelson and Rockwell give Oscar caliber performances. Woody comes off best…but that is because his character is the nicest. McDormand and Rockwell’s characters have some deep dark issues. 3. Many many memorable scenes. 4. The story, though depressing, seems very real.. You will feel the pain McDormand is going through.

The Bad: 1. Movie seems a tad bit too long. 2. Some of scenes of violence will make you feel pretty uncomfortable…..which is probably what the director wanted….but it is too “real”. 3. No real consequences for the horrible actions of McDormand and Rockwell. In the world of Twitter….many of their actions would become national phenomenons….and not for good reasons.

So after weighing the good versus the bad…..came to the conclusion…..that not only is the movie good…..it is a movie that I liked. I can however, understand if somebody does not like this movie.
