Happy 93rd birthday to the wonderful Dick Van Dyke!
Hey Flora….when I first saw you commenting on this page….I was thinking he had passed….glad to see it was a birthday shout out. Happy Birthday to DVD.
Dick Van Dyke or DVD has never been on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list (amazing he is in Mary Poppins Returns in December with Meryl Streep). Hey Dan….compared to the other list of the other 90+ thespian…Dick Van Dyke has lots of current young co-stars on his list…..that should keep him connected for a very long time. Sounds like you were a huge DVD fan in the 1960s. That had to be his most popular decade….between the television show and a solid output of movies. Looking at the second list…surprising that his first “match” is Newman at 67th. Night of the Museum is a great “connector” for all three lists. Dick Tracy was pretty helpful too. Only 12 Oscar winning co-stars….but a decent total since he has less than 20 movies on our table. Fun lists to look at….thanks for sharing this information.
HI BRUCE
Thanks for the feedback. I wasn’t of course complaining about your scant attention overall to TV performers but just commenting on it as a fact. Heaven knows you give us enough great stuff as it is.
Hey Bob….understood.
Not as many films as I expected from DVD, maybe because he was mostly a TV personality? Anyway I did see one of his films at the cinema when I was young ‘wif me parents’ and that was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I enjoyed it and even had the song album. I didn’t see Mary Poppins at the cinema but other family musicals I remember watching on the big screen were Paint Your Wagon and Bedknobs and Broomsticks… aah memories…
Okay I’ve seen 5 Van Dyke films from the chart – Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty, Dick Tracy and 2 Night at the Museums. All of them enjoyable.
Mary Poppins tops all the charts, as it should. Here in the UK that film was notorious for Dick’s terrible attempt at a London cockney accent. I remember one movie poll listing it as the worst on-screen accent in film history. Even Dick himself called it ‘atrocious’. Other contenders were Kevin Costner’s failed attempt at English in Robin Hood and Russell Crowe’s ‘oirish’ sounding Sir Robin of Locksley in er Robin Hood. 🙂
Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!
STEVE
Another contender maybe Richard Gere’s “Oirish” accent in The Bruce Willis flick The Jackal?
Good suggestion Bob….Gere’s Irish accent was pretty bad in that one.
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for the visit, the comment, the tally count and the sharing of DVD memories.
2. Tally count….bob cox 10, me 9, Flora 6 and you at 5…..wow….I did not think you would be last…..but there you are….lol.
3. I was just watching the attached Chitty Chitty Bang Bang trailer…I realize I have forgotten almost most of that movie…at least in regards to the smaller scenes….memory is a fickle beast. The granddad almost looks like the hunter in Jumanji (Williams version)…I wonder if they borrowed that look from this movie.
4. Yep…his number one movie was not in doubt….Dick Tracy being in 2nd is interesting….but his role is very small.
5. His accent is indeed horrible in Mary Poppins….but it was an accent I copied when I was younger….I used to say “bloody in an English accent all the time”. Not only that…I practiced my “bloody” all the time too.
6. At least DVD did the same accent the entire movie….Costner only uses the accent every once in awhile in Robin Hood. There might be a page in worst accents of all-time.
Good stuff.
