I saw 3. 2 of top 3 missed the anime. no 10s, no 9s. hidden gem is almost famous ,an 8, a charming coming of age movie in the wreckage of groupies in the music industry, phillip seymour hoffman is powerful in a small role. not for everyone.
Normally I painstakingly check a performer’s filmography to try to assess the extent to which his/her contributions to the movies justify the grosses credited to the individual concerned on this site.
However in Kate’s case I didn’t make an assessment as it would have been a meaningless exercise because Kate is not apparently a particularly strong box office star as illustrated by (1) she has only 3 one hundred million dollar barrier crashers in the table above, one of which is a movie with a large ensemble cast and her role is voice only (2) the overall gross of the 28 films in the table averages out at just under 26 million per movie.
IMDB credits her with 17 acting awards and 37 nominations but it does not list her among its perceived 100 Greatest Movie Actresses of all time though that’s not as big a negative in a way as it might at first seem as ranked no 100 in the list is Doris Day.
However if reports of her net worth are accurate she will be pleased that it amounts to $38 million.
CLARIFICATION
In my previous post the $38 million I referred to relates to Kate and not Doris, whose net worth is said to be $200 million. A slight difference you will no doubt think!
Anyway apologies for any initial confusion.
Hey Bob…..thanks for checking out our Kate Hudson page. I basically agree about your assessment on her career. She had a nice run as a popular leading lady in the 2000s. In some regards she has become a Oprah like celebrity….as her opinion on lots of subjects have been received positively…from books to exercise to clothes. Since I am a Goldie/Kurt fan I have always followed her career. That is a nice collection of wealth by her.
Last night I watched her short film Cutlass (she wrote and directed) with Kurt Russell…..a nice short film with an impressive cast. It can be seen here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvzrPQjcla4
Good stuff as always.
HI BRUCE Thanks for your feedback on my Kate Hudson/Russell-Hawn family posts and for the link to Cutlass which I shall enjoy watching.
Bette and my Joan didn’t agree on much but they both did share the view that to be regarded as a genuine star a performer had to pull his or her weight at the box office by demonstrating the ability to “open” a string of box office hits [as in modern times Cruise, Willis and Hanks’ Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock for example have done] as opposed to sporadic commercial success and/or benefiting from “other people’s movies”.
I have long felt that there is now so much money in the entertainment business that even relatively lowly ranked entertainers are capable of generating vast fortunes that in Hollywood’s classic era, especially with stars having tightly controlled “to scale” contracts, only the TRUE stars would normally have accumulated.
Aligned to that, it seems to me, that hype has today reached such exaggerated proportions that many performers are regarded as “stars” because large swathes of the general public do not always enjoy the benefit and privilege of access to cold, hard comprehensive box office stats, information and comparisons such as those that you so richly provide us with.
Off screen I admired performers like Gary Merrill, who campaigned for black voter registration, Myrna Loy, who championed the “underdog”, Clark Gable who campaigned against racially segregated rest-rooms at MGM, Robert Vaughn, who spoke out against the Vietnam War when it was still popular in the States and Britain’s Baron Richard Attenborough who refused to offer his support for the Iraq War.
However whilst I have idolised people like The Duke, Mumbles and Sir Maurice I have never needed them to tell me how to arrive at my own political convictions, what kind of clothes to wear or how to exercise.
Even if I did find their observations about such matters valuable –and that would have to be for the advice’s OWN MERITS and not because of who they are or were – I would not consider that such a situation would make them any greater a movie STAR. In short I feel that, because of the factors that I have mentioned above there are today many performers who are over-hyped and/or can climb on numerous bandwagons but whose situation back in the days of the likes of Crawford, Davis, Gable and Wayne might well have veered more towards being “almost famous” or [like the Gabors] “famous for being famous”
I’ve seen 9 of Kate Hudson’s movies so far, Kung Fu Panda 3 is my only real favorite here but I do remember enjoying Almost Famous many years ago. Deepwater Horizon was a well made disaster movie, I bought it on blu-ray recently for a fiver. The Skeleton Key was a weird horror mystery. The Killer Inside Me was quite nasty I remember.
Surprised Kate didn’t appear in movies with her mother Goldie Hawn, or Kurt Russell.
Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!
Kate and Kurt are both in Deepwater Horizon.
Hey Dan….you are 100% correct. She and Kurt are in Deepwater Horizon. She played Wahlberg’s wife and Kurt played Wahlberg’s boss. They sadly only have one scene together. Kate did direct in the 2007 short film Cutlass…a short I want to see but have never found. Thanks for the feedback.
Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our Kate Hudson movie page. I have seen 22 of the 28 movies or almost 79% of her movies. I really liked Deepwater Horizon…and thought she did well in her supporting role. I saw Almost Famous….I thought it was ok…..but, realize lots of people really like that movie….maybe I need to see it again. I agree with you about The Skelton Key and The Killer Inside Me., as they were indeed both weird and nasty. Thanks for the comment, tally and visit. Good stuff.
