Hey Dan. Thanks for the Ethan Hawke lists. I would have guessed he would have made the Top 100…..to see he did not even cross the Top 500 is very hard to believe. But…at the rate he is currently making movies, he might get there very soon. Looking at the first list…Vincent D’Onofrio jumps off the list….I think there is another movie they appeared in…Sinister….as Vincent appears on video in that one…at least I think. Thinking they must be friends off screen, to appear in that many movies together.
27 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty good. He gives Robin Williams a lot of credit for the success of his career. Williams contacted his agent about Hawke, while they were filming Dead Poet’s Society…I think Hawke still has the same agent 30 years later. As always…your lists provide an awesome amount of information. Thank you.
I see Vinnie as listed as uncredited for Sinister on the IMDB so they’re together 8 times then.
I saw 10. one 10, dead poets society, not a favorite. no favorites, no hidden gems.
Hey bob cox…..thanks for the visit, tally and comment. Tally count….Me 38, Steve 20, you 10 and Bob 2. Looks like Ethan Hawke has not made much of an impact on you. He is grown on me over the last few years. He gives good interviews. Good stuff.
Joe Dante’s Explorers must be the first time I saw Ethan Hawke on film, it’s an old classic now and co-starred River Phoenix.
I’ve seen 20 of the 60 films on the chart, one third. Favorites are – Explorers, Gattaca, Daybreakers, The Magnificent Seven, Assault on Precinct 13, Training Day and Valerian and the Planet of a Thousand Cities.
I haven’t seen any of the ‘Before’ movies… oh wait I’ve seen one – Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. I haven’t seen Boyhood either. [Bruce faints]
Dead Poets Society was his biggest hit, surprised it was so successful, must have been when Robin WIlliams was a big draw, after Good Morning Vietnam. I’ve watched it a couple of times since it’s 1989 release, it was too downbeat for moi. Might give it another spin for Robin.
Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve…..Tally Count. Me 38, you 20 and Bob 2. Seen all of your favorites. I would put Gattaca in my Top 5. I have seen two of the Before movies…the one you saw (good movie but depressing as hell) and the Before Sunrise. Williams was at the peak of his awesome box office run when Dead Poets came out….I think any movie he made would have been big. But that one is the favorite of many teachers that I work with. Predestination is an interesting time travel movie…still not sure if I like it or not. I want to see his The Kid…..it opened in limited theaters this weekend, with so so reviews. Thanks for the feedback.
Hey Work Horse- slow down! You beaver away like a Trojan 24/7 whilst for me, being fully retired, it’s a case of “And that lucky old sun ain’t got nothing to do but roll around Heaven all day” and yet my posts can barely keep up with your new input.
Ethan Hawke has always impressed me as being one of those actors like William Hurt who acquired much prestige but overall had no great direct box office worth. Your material above tends to bear out that impression as you draw attention to Ethan’s artistic achievement such as 4 Oscar nominations but in your stats table credit him with just 8 movies with an adjusted domestic gross of over $50 million dollars – that’s just 13.33% of the 60 you’ve listed as a result of your usual obviously painstaking research.
Even when one consults your informative worldwide grosses column one sees that only 6 [approx 10%] of the 60 movies crash the 100 million dollar mark that’s normally a valued target for you on just the domestic scene alone. However the beauty of your site is that it “tells it as it is” and [people like Queen Myrna aside!] doesn’t gush sycophantically about performers as most fan magazines do but clinically reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of careers. Please keep that up – we get enough hype today.
I have already mentioned today that I am not normally a great fan of modern movies but as seemingly Ethan has done a lot of good work, it is to my shame that I’ve seen only 2 of his movies right through – Dad and Lord of War. I can’t remember Ethan in Dad but enjoyed him in the Cage flick. I started viewing Training Day on video but switched it off as I found it unwatchable despite the supporting actor nom, your own fine 75% rating for the film and the fact that one of my top 20 idols, Denzel Washington, was its star.
However Ethan has kept going and as your first table, which is very helpfully for doing chronological calculations, shows his output in very recent years has been highly prolific – 18 films in the past 5 years alone. He’s still getting top billing too as often as not, which further confirms my impression of him as a prestige actor. As I write he has a further 2 at post-production stage, and he is top billed in one of them. IMDB credits him with 59 acting awards overall and 142 noms and his net worth is reported at $55 million
Hey Bob…rarely do I put two pages out on the same day…..but have a classic star and a current star might not be a bad idea…keep all factions of the web site happy. I have been toying with a Ethan Hawke page for awhile….the fact that The Kid quietly opened this past weekend, got me to finally pull the trigger on this page.
Good breakdown on his career. I like the comparison to William Hurt. I think it shows, that dispute a great box office record….that making quality movies will keep you in the business for a very long time. I think he compares well to Jake Gylllehnalhallladdl and Colin Farrell…busy busy actors with limited box office success.
I am beginning to like the first table of movies as well….seeing the person’s movies by year has more benefits that I originally thought. I agree…he has been very busy the last few years. Thanks for the tally, comment and visit. Good stuff.
