  1. I think Geena is one of the tallest actresses in Hollywood, about 6ft methinks. wonder who’s taller Geena or Sigourney?

I’ve seen 15 of the 20 films on the chart. Favorites are- Beetlejuice, The Fly, Fletch, Thelma and Louise, Earth Girls are Easy and The Last Kiss Goodnight.

Tootsie was a monster hit, watched it a couple of times, not a favorite. I’d rather watch Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire. 🙂

Good work Bruce and thanks for video share, it is appreciated. Vote Up!

    1. Ask the question in another way: which one would Laddie have required the higher box for him to co-star opposite?

As far as I know the position is as follows:

Geena : 6ft dead. In fact the tallest girl in her class when she was at school. WH wouldn’t have pushed her around!

Sigourney: 5ft 11 and three quarters.

Nicole Kidman: 5ft 11″; To reporters after divorcing Cruise “At last I can wear high heels again!”

      1. Tall ladies. Alan Ladd would look like a child next to them.

But was he that short or are we all exaggerating? Was he as tall as Michael J Fox or Tom Cruise? Had to be taller than Danny DeVito surely? I know Veronica Lake was tiny. Ladd’s favorite co-star. 🙂

        1. SHORTEST TO THE BOTTOM TALLEST TO THE TOP

          Danny DeVito/4ft 10ins
          Joe Yule Junior/5ft 2ins
          Holly Hunter/5ft 2ins
          Veronica Lake/5ft 2 ins
Joe Pesci/5ft 3ins [in real life but 6ft 3 inches on the Cogerson site]
Michael J Fox/5ft 4 and one quarter inches
Alan Ladd/5ft 6 and one quarter inches
James Cagney/5ft 6 and one half inches
          Al Pacino/5ft 7ins
          Eddie Robinson/5ft 7ins
          George Raft/5ft 7ins
          Tom Cruise/5ft 7 ins
          James Arness/6ft 6ins
          Bruce Cogerson 7 feet

THE ANOMOLY: Ladd is just quarter inch shorter than Cagney and only three quarters shorter than Pacino, Robinson, Raft and Cruise, yet Laddie has been treated as almost a movie freak for years whilst the others have all gotten a bye. I have just watched an old Fred Astaire film in which within the space of 5 mins the middle-aged Fred was 3 times addressed as “young man”

    2. Hey Steve….our tally counts are very close. She is indeed 6 feet tall….Weaver is just a tick under 6 feet…so the edge goes to Davis. The Last Goodnight is a sneaky good movie…Samuel L. Jackson considers that movie to be one of the best of his career….which is really impressive when you know how many movies he has made. I am right there with you on Williams and Hoffman…though neither Tootsie or Mrs. Doubtfire get rewatched much by me. Always glad to share your videos. Good stuff!

  2. Wasn’t MIchael Douglas along with Tom Cruise mentioned for Cutthroat Island before Renny Harlin decided his wife should be the star? I think Cruise didn’t want to be second billed to a woman and Michael Douglas was originally supposed to be the lead. Didn’t Geena also participate in the Olympics in archery?

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for the lists on Geena Davis…they are greatly appreciated.
      2. As for Cuthroat Island….I have read a book about the greatest box office bombs of all-time…and that movie has a long chapter in the book.
      3. You are correct….Douglas and Cruise were indeed attached to the movie. Cruise at the beginning when Davis and her husband were not involved. Douglas bowed out when he saw the approaching trainwreck. Davis was going to be the second lead…until everyone bailed. Even Charlie Sheen passed. That left Matthew Modine in the role..and his star wattage was well behind Davis’ clout.
      4. Davis finished 20th of 24 in an Olympic archery tournament….I think it was one that decided who got to go to the Olympics.
      5. I liked the Accidental Tourist as well…she was easily the best part of that movie.
      6. With only 20 movies listed here…not surprised she did not crack the Oracle top 1000.
      7. Looks like Jeff Goldblum is her most frequent Oracle co-star….they were married when they made those movies.
      8. Not many Oscar winning co-stars…heck that might be the lowest tally ever…at least from the lists you have provided.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. I have seen 5 Geena Davis Movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Tootsie.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Stuart Little.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Accidental Tourist. I read the book in high school English.

    Favourite Geena Davis Movies:

    Tootsie
    A League of Their Own
    Thelma and Louise
    The Accidental Tourist

Other Geena Davis Movie I Have Seen:

    Beetlejuice

    1. Hey Flora…..thanks for the comment and thoughts on Geena Davis. I have seen 17 or 85% of her movies. The only one I missed during her prime movie star days was Angie. Seen and liked all of your favorites…with Tootsie, A League of Their Own joining A Long Kiss Goodnight, Beetlejuice and Fletch as my favorite Davis movies. Not thinking you are missing much by skipping either Stuart Little movie. Good stuff as always.

  4. 1/As Bruce’s charts above show Geena has barely registered on the big screen since the Stuart Little films at the turn of this century. Probably her potential for major lasting stardom was dealt a savage blow by the massive commercial flop of 1995’s Cutthroat Island in which she was billed as the top star.

2/ WIKIPEDIA:”Cutthroat Island had a total production budget of $98 million (though some put the figure as high as $115 million) and the total U.S. gross was $10,017,322. In 2014, the LA Times listed the film as one of the most expensive box office flops of all time as well as making the Guinness World Record as the biggest box-office bomb of all-time.” Those figures are actual but BRUCE, above, gives the film a paltry adjusted $20 mil US gross and a low 49% rating for review. The budgetary figures quoted are equivalent to 160-190 million in today’s dollars.

3/Certainly nowadays Geena [like William Hurt, Meg Ryan and Demi Moore of Geena’s time in the sun] has to be considered a ‘light of former days’ and the heady times of Thelma and Louise, Accidental Tourist and A League of Their Own [the latter two great faves of mine] seem consigned to the distant past.

4/But for Geena a t least that’s just in the movies because perhaps more importantly in the greater scheme of things Geena does much real-life charity and humanitarian work and in fact it has been announced that next year [2020] she will receive the Jean Hersholt humanitarian award bringing her total awards/noms to 12 and 29 respectively.

5/Also Geena has built up a nice little nest egg of $30 million according to Celeb Net Worth and although she has received no Cogerson love of any kind in Bruce’s book or in his Greatest female actresses 1950-2010 list, she is ranked no 41 among the 100 best actresses of the MODERN time according to an IMDB list. In addition she is ranked 57th on an IMDB list of ALL-TIME greatest actresses above (a) such classic era Legends as Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Garbo and Deb Kerr (b) the likes of my fave Streisand and Cogerson ‘pet’ Demi Moore among modern actresses who are still alive.

6/In short in my opinion Geena is worthy of this new page, which is “Voted Up.”

    1. Hey Bob. Great thoughts on Geena Davis. I agree with everything you have written. I think you are 100% correct….the bomb Cutthroat Island pretty much ended the peak of her movie starring days. It has been supporting roles and television roles since then. Also…it should be noted that she turned 39 in 1995….the curse of 39 strikes again. Her Honorary Oscar is well merited…yet I still think Harrison Ford should get one (opening that can of worms again…lol). I do not regret my exclusion of her in my book….hard to be among the greats when you only have 20 movies and half were supporting roles. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

As the song says “We belong to a mutual admiration society!” – I am content with everything you say.
