Check out Michael Redgrave‘s career compared to current and classic actors. Most 100 Million Dollar Movies of All-Time.
Sir Michael was never quite talked about in the same hushed tones as Olivier/Richardson/Gielgud but he was considered a highly prestigious actor all the same.
In the 15-year period from 1941-1955 inclusive he was listed 5 times as one of Britain’s Top 10 box office stars by the Motion Picture Herald; and in 1954’s The Sea Shall Not Have Them he was billed above Britain’s very popular Dirk Bogarde [my own idol of course].
My fave Redgrave roles have been in 1947’s political drama Fame is the Spur; 1954’s mystery thriller The Green Scarf; the 1962 “kitchen sink” drama The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; as the brow-beaten and cuckolded ageing Classics master at an English school in 1951’s The Browning Version; and perhaps most of all in the 1958 version of Graham Greene’s The Quiet Virginian.
The 1958 version was not nearly as good as Sir Maurice Micklewhite’s later 2002 offering [Cogerson ratings 62% [1958] 80% [2002] but Sir Michael Redgrave’s performance as Thomas Fowler was for me as thrilling as Sir Maurice’s interpretation of the role; and that’s saying something because Sir Maurice [another Brit idol of mine] was brilliant as Fowler and he quite frankly tends to enthrall me in virtually ANYTHING he does.
Olivier was originally cast as Fowler but when Monty Clift dropped out of the title role of Aiden Pyle The American and was replaced by the miscast Audie Murphy Larry left the production and was replaced by Redgrave. The 1958 version was the first movie ever to be filmed in Vietnam itself; but the later Micklewhite version was also shot in Vietnam [Saigon]
“Vote Up!”
Hey Bob….thanks for the feedback on Sir Redgrave. Sorry we were unable to find any box office informationon some of your favorite Redgrave movies.Good comparison of the two Quiet American movies….I think Caine’s version was more faithful to the source material, but I have not seen the Redgrave version. Good background information on the filming of that movie. Good stuff as always.

1. Thank you for these comment and information.
2. Usually when I think somebody will not be on the Oracle list, they are in fact on the list. My first thought was….he is not on the list, but he is probably in the Top 400…..so even though my first thought was no he would not be on the list…it turns out I am surprised he did not make the Top 1000.
3. At least he has Michael Caine in his connections…that would make him feel better…lol.
4. Laurence Olivier with the honors as most frequent Oracle co-star.
5. The Oracle list is filled with English actor royalty.
6. Looking at the second list, 19 is on the low end…especially for somebody who acted in so many different decades.
Good stuff as always.
