UMR Review of Reminiscence (2021)
Why I watched this one? I like Hugh Jackman and I have HBO Max….so I took advantage of being able to see this one at home versus having to go to the theater to see it.
What is this one about? Hugh Jackman plays Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, navigates the alluring world of the past when his life is changed by new client Mae. A simple case becomes an obsession after she disappears and he fights to learn the truth about her.
My thoughts on this one? Overall I liked it. This was essentially a combination of a film noir movie and a science fiction movie. The film noir comes from Jackman playing a Humphrey Bogart like character who is in love with a femme fatale played by Rebecca Ferguson. The science fiction part comes from that, it is set in the future, with the effects of global warming everywhere and that Jackman operates a machine that allows to people revisit their memories.
The movie is cast well and they all do well in their roles. The twist and turns were fun to follow. On the negative side, the main set did not really ring true….it seemed way too much like a movie set versus a real place. Some of the twists revolving around Ferguson’s character fell flat for me. Thandiwe Newton is excellent in the first half of the movie, but pretty much forgetton in the second half.
Final thought: A well done movie, that I enjoyed, but has some issues that will not have me racing back to see this one again.
