Alan Hale (1892-1950) was an American actor and director.  If there was a Hall of Fame for supporting character actors, Alan Hale would have a place in that museum. His IMDb page shows 248 acting credits from 1912 to 1950. This page will rank Alan Hale movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. To do well in the rankings, a movie needed to do well at the box office, be liked by both critics and audiences and earn some award recognition. FYI – Even thought there are over 100 movies on the following tables, there are still many Alan Hale movies not included.  Sadly we were unable to find box office grosses on those movies, so they could not be ranked.

  • Sort Alan Hale movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Alan Hale movies by yearly domestic box office rank

    1. Hey Dan…thanks for the thoughts and trivia on the Skipper’s dad. I grew up only knowing Alan Hale Jr. from Gilligan’s Island. No clue about his dad until I got older and wiser. I bet if the Oracle list was around in 1950, Hale Sr. would have been very highly ranked. John Carradine as the most frequent Oracle co-stars with 4 movies. As for Oscar winners….87 movies is a huge total but as you mentioned it is only from 35 thespians. Hope all is going well this summer.

  2. According to my letterboxd account, I have seen 64 Alan Hale, Sr. films.

The HIGHEST ranked movie here I have seen is It Happened One Night.

The highest ranked movie here I have NOT seen is Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The LOWEST ranked movie I have seen is Fog Over Frisco.

Favourite Alan Hale Sr. films include:

    It Happened One Night
The Adventures of Robin Hood and ALL the other films with Erroll Flynn
    Destination Tokyo
    Captains of the Clouds,
    The Strawberry Blonde
    The Inspector General
The Man in the Iron Mask
    They Drive By Night
    The Man I love
    Dust Be My Destiny

There a lot more, but I wanted to share a few of them

    1. Hey Flora. First of all, great hearing from you. Secondly, sorry there have not been many classic thespians lately. WoC and I have been doing a ton of work behind the scenes trying to fix UMR. ?When doing a report…I saw we had 100 Alan Hale Sr. movies in the database…so figured we should get these movies out, even though many of his movies were not included. He was a very busy man.

64 Hale movies seen, pretty impressive. I am at 15 of the 100 listed above. Of the ones you have seen…I have seen 14 of them (granted that comes from seeing many Errol Flynn movies. As for It Happened One Night….I have no memory of Hale’s part in that one. Good information as always.
