Albert Finney Movies

Albert Finney (1936 – 2019) was a 5 time Oscar® nominated English actor.  Finney achieved especial success as a Shakespearean actor before switching to film.  His film career lasted from 1960’s The Entertainer to 2012’s Skyfall.  His IMDb page shows 65 from 1956 to 2012.   This page ranks  Albert Finney movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, bit parts, and his movies not released in North America theaters are not included in the rankings.

  1. Just found out Albert Finney died by reading Bob Roy and Logan’s comment on UMR’s forum page. I’m sorry to hear that he died. He is one of my favourite British actors. Ironically, Tom Jones was scheduled today on TCM as part of a day of Oscar winning and nominated comedies.

    Rest in Peace.

    1. Hey Flora. I found out this sad news today while I was at work, WoC was nice enough to do the post that shared this sad news. In many ways he always reminded me of Michael Caine….as he always made a movie better when he appeared. Watching Tom Jones today might be a little bittersweet. Good thoughts on Mr. Finney.

  2. I saw 16, including 11 of top 12. to annoy The Bob you can add oceans 12. 10s and favorites: erin brochovich, oceans 12, the big fish, the bourne ultimatum, tom jones. another 10 is traffic. hidden gem is amazing grace an 8 and a solid historical picture. was pope john paul II made for tv? it was long but okay historical picture .
I disagree with him being in top 100 all time despite 4 Oscar nominations, just not my cup of tea. I felt he was the weak link of the picture in his top 3 leading man roles that I saw: tom jones , two for the road and murder on the orient express. I will check him out further , never saw the dresser, sat night and sunday morning, under the volcano and scrooge so thank you UMR for adding to my “to be seen” watchlist.
Joel has Brando and Wayne, I have Finney and Henry Fonda and I hope an open mind. I wonder if Joel expressed controversial opinions to help sell books? is it possible in pointing out brando’s possibly inflated remuneration/greed that Joel was pointing 3 fingers back at himself?

    1. Hey bob cox….Thanks for stopping by and checking out our Albert Finney page. 16 is pretty stout. I would say, with seeing 11 of 12 that you have seen the best of Albert Finney. Funny about Ocean’s 12. For years Bob wanted to have Superman Returns added to Brando’s page…well WoC ended up adding in lots of movies for people I had decided not to include….it swooped up Brando and 100s more….apparently her program did not pick up Finney in that movie.

I have not seen Amazing Grace…but son number two speaks very highly of that movie. I am with you about Finney….he would probably be in the discussion when we reached the 90s (if I was ranking the Top 100)…but he probably would not make it. At school I am surrounded by kids that swear Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson are the best actors…so I would have to include those all-time great thespians…lol.

As for Joel….he think he had it out for Brando…but if you read his Wayne thoughts…he gave Wayne great grades for his movies from the 1939 to 1976…..he gave Wayne lhorrible grades for his B westerns….when combining the two types of movies….Wayne got a high score…if you just take his movies from Stagecoach to Shootist he moves up nicely. Good feedback as always.

      1. Hey bob cox and bob (if you are reading)

So I just went through Joel’s book….and if you take Wayne’s rating from Stagecoach to The Shootist….he has an average Joel rating of 3.25 (the most is 4.00)…that would put Wayne in the Top 100…versus the low 300s when the B movies are included. I love Wayne but he made some real clunkers too….Brannigan, The Conqueror and Hellfighters come quickly to mind…..so when you look at that way…he actually liked Wayne.

As for Brando…maybe you are right…he just did that to sell books…as I have often told Bob…as much as Joel slammed Brando…he was sure to have Brando on the book cover…not once…but twice. Ok…I am getting real tired now. Good stuff as always.

        1. HI GUYS

So the Work Horse has come out of the closet as a secret Brando fan! Bruce actually bought Joel’s book not because of it’s Pearls of Wisdom but because Hirsch had Marlon’s photo on the cover on it!

Actually because I liked what I saw of Joel’s appreciation and analysis of opera I had already half- forgiven him. The latest information about Duke Wayne and Bruce reminding me again about the book cover brings that up to three-quarters forgiveness.

However just as it is with Bruce and Steve and their sometimes fussy movie ratings for even the great classics there’s never going to be a forgiveness level for Hirsch that reaches 100%. If I ever find myself getting near that level I will liked Pharaoh in the Bible “harden my heart”!

As for Superman Returns in my mind W o C now gets billing on this site even above her husband!

          1. My 2.38am post was meant for BRUCE & Bob Cox – apologies guys.

          2. HI BOB COX It struck me that you might be confused by Bruce and me bandying about references to the film Superman Returns. For a long while I tried without success to get The Work Horse to include that movie in Brando’s list of grosses because although he had only a posthumous cameo and voice over participation in it his name was extensively used to publicise the film and the latter is one of Bruce’s own declared criteria for giving grosses credit to a star

I even got the Superman Returns Appreciation Society to write to Bruce but it was all to no avail so because “When MEN have done their best the angels can do no more,” I gave up but hey presto some time after I had contented myself with licking my wounds in my tent the film suddenly appeared on Brando’s page because [albeit as part of a wider exercise] W o C decided it should go there.

I am reminded of a boss I had years ago who was bold as a lion when it came to confronting men who had transgressed but when a woman needed to be disciplined he got quickly off side and left the task to an underling!

Anyway W o C seems to have found a way round the old adage that” a man convinced against his will remains unconvinced still,” though maybe the slogan on a T-shirt that my brother in law wears really says it all “Who’s the boss in my house? Ask my wife!”

As it is though whilst Myrna Loy might be the heroine of Mrs Cogerson’s husband my own three greatest heroines in relation to movies are Joan Crawford, Deanna Durbin Doris Day – and W o C!

            Have a good weekend Bob.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As always…thanks for these detailed lists.
      2. I imagine his ranking will continue to decline rapidly…as he is retired and has not made a movie since 2012.
      3. No Caine…which I find surprising….but two Bruce movies…Breakfast of Champions was such a disappointment….Willis & Kurt Vonnegut (two of my favorites) = horrible movie.
      4. 30 Oscar winning co-stars is on the low side.
      5. Jacqueline Bisset as his most frequent co-star….now that is some good trivia.
      Good stuff as always.
