  1. Finney was one of the greats. RIP.

The downside to turning down a Knighthood is that the general public will think you were never considered, i.e. not deemed worthy, which is fine if you don’t care what the public thinks.

John Cleese is said to have refused a Knighthood, his Monty Python pal Michael Palin happily accepted his.

To quote Prince Feisal in Lawrence of Arabia – “Take the honour colonel, be a little kind.”

    1. “I can’t be responsible for what other people think.”

“It’s a powerfully hard thing to please all of the people all of the time.” legendary English Daily Mirror columnist Cassandra.

  2. Great actor. RIP.

Big Fish was my favorite movie with Finney. I lost my father in 2011, and this movie’s father-son dynamic always had a huge emotional impact on me. It was a beautiful film, and Finney was great in it.

    1. Hey sut6432…..I have the same feeling about my late dad and Big Fish as well. Sort of have the same vibe for The Good Year….only in that one Russell Crowe is the son like character to Finney’s uncle. Thanks for sharing that movie memory.

      1. The last 15 minutes of that film can bring me to tears every single time, it’s so well done, and Danny Elfman’s score is brilliant at bringing it all together. I say this as someone who grew up watching Stallone and Arnold action movies, haha. Big Fish is my favorite Tim Burton film.

  3. Been reading lots of the celebrity thoughts on Albert Finney, this one by Ridley Scott is my favorite.

    “What life ! —

    What a loss ! —

    A marvelous artist —

And the best guy to have dinner with

And Tom Jones is one of my favorite films !

Where have these golden oldies gone ?

To the bar possibly — CHEERS !

    AND THANKS ALBERT !

    With admiration

    RIDLEY SCOTT”

    Rest in peace.

    1. Hey Taylor…great find. Finney and Scott worked together a few times….with The Good Year being my favorite of their work together. I always thought The Good Year was an underrated gem.

    1. Hey Howtowho, Tom Jones is his most successful movie, it was the one that made him a star….but it is not in my Top 5 Finney movies….those would be Miller’s Crossing, Murder on the Orient Express, Big Fish, Amazing Grace (just re-watched that two nights ago) and Before The Devil Knows You Are Dead.

  4. Finney was an actor who I found genuinely convincing whenever he appeared in a movie. From his classic turns as a leading man in Tom Jones, to his wonderful supporting roles in Big Fish, Millers Crossing and Skyfall. RIP.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Sir Albert Finney. I am right there with you on Miller’s Crossing and Big Fish. His part in Skyfall, was good…but far from a great Finney role. But…it turns out to be a wonderful swan song for Finney. That is his last IMDb credit. RIP Mr. Finney.
