Hey PhilHoF17…I think you would like both Loophole and The Good Year….Loophole is a heist movie that has an ending that I love. Finney shines in both of the movie….though his part in The Good Year is told in flashbacks..and is pretty small. Thanks for the headsup on Young Winston….I have fixed that. It seems like I have messed that movie up before…..not sure what I did….but it now seems to be fixed in our database. Good catch. Good stuff.
Just to add my RIP wishes to Albert Finney, a fine actor who depicted a wide variety of characters from the late classic movie era (early 1960s) all the way to the early 2010s. Tom Jones, Big Fish, and Murder on the Orient Express are some of the films I remember him best in. Looking through this list, it struck to me that Finney made relatively few films when he was a leading man in the 1960s and 1970s, and was more active on the screen in later years as a character actor, though like many talented British movie stars, he was also very active on the stage.
Hey PhilHoF17. Good comment on Albert Finney. You are correct about his movie output. You are probably correct about his stage performances, overriding his movie roles. Two underrated movies I liked were Loophole and The Good Year…..both bombed at the box office, but I really enjoyed them. Thanks for the visit and comment.
Thanks Bruce, I had not heard of Loophole and The Good Year. Looking a bit more deeply into Finney’s career, I noticed two things. Firstly, it was not precise of me to call him a leading man only in the 60s/70s, as I see he had a number of leading roles through the 80s and 90s, though it seems to me he was a bit passed his heyday by then. Secondly, he does not appear in the cast of Young Winston, which is one of the films listed above. Finney did, however, play the war-time Churchill in a TV film, The Gathering Storm – That’s one I saw and I can say that Finney deserved his golden globe award for his performance.
