This is our attempt to statistically rank the greatest shows in television history. We are sure you have questions about our rankings, so we will try and answer them in advance.
1. Which shows were eligible to be ranked? We only included shows that were “script written”. Meaning variety shows, game shows, news shows, and talk shows were NOT included. We are sure you will quickly figure out most of the shows are American shows.
2. What is the basis of your rankings? We ranked them in three categories: (1) Ratings measured by how long the show was on the air. (2) Reviews from critics and audiences. (3) Emmy nominations and wins. Once we collected all the data, we combined the stats to get one rating per show. Then compared the rating to other shows and made our list.
3. Does this list include all “script written” shows? Sadly, no. We researched over 500 shows and kept over 300 shows for the rankings. There are many many more television shows out there. If you see a major omission please let us know.
4. Can this ranking be taken as “gospel”? Of course not! Lists are made to get people to argue. But ultimately this is just a fun way to look at the history of television shows. The following massive table does provide a ton of stats. Hopefully, you will enjoy that as much as we did researching those stats.
But enough questions….please check out our All-Time Greatest Television Shows….Statistically Speaking.

No Gale Storm show, no Donna Reed, no Mr. Ed !!!!
I am impressed with the amount of information on the page, but I am even more impressed with Dan’s comment. This comment had to take a lot of time and a great deal of patience. Surprised about a few of the shows you have not heard of before. Fringe, Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror are really good shows. So good job UMR and good job Dan.
I agree with you 100% In The Shadows….Dan’s willingness to share this information is always appreciated but his breakdown of all 351 shows is mind blowing. As for the shows he has not seen….I have not seen Peaky Blinders or Black Mirror but I really liked Fringe…I have seen every episode of that movie….and you get Leonard Nimoy in a few episodes. Thanks for stopping by…your rare visits are always welcomed.
Well done Dan. Even The Work Horse who executes some massively hefty exercises himself must be gasping at what you have produced here.
It is truly the Mother of all “Here’s what I have seen” declarations on this site. A mega direct confrontation for good or bad with EVERY one of the 351 entries in Bruce’s super-comprehensive TV stats chart. Awesome and eye-catchingly easy to follow and understand – “even Solomon in all his splendor was not arrayed like one of these.” Matthew 6:29
Seriously though Dan a tremendous piece of work.
Hey Bob…..we are having one of those rare times we agree. I agree with you 100% of your praise for Dan and his massive comment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hey Dan
1. Oh my goodness….what an epic comment. Truly impressed you took the time to tackle this monster 351 television list.
2. The reason there is no Gale Storm, Donna Reed, or Mr. Ed is because I figured you where tired commenting on so many shows….354 might have been the straw that broke the camels back….lol.
3. Actually….I have in my notes to include The Donna Reed Show and Mr. Ed……I am hoping to return to this page later in the week…..reality struck hard today….as online school started back up….and it was a long day.
4. Ok….some of my thoughts on your thoughts: Surprised you have not seen many of the Top 14…..Seinfeld & The Office are your first ones you have seen more than a handful of episodes. I guess. Some pretty famous shows you managed to avoid.
5. I like you was able to avoid most of the Friends shows….I think the Bruce Willis arc was the only time I watched the show…..though Bruce did win an Emmy for that one.
6. Star Trek…so you watched all the original shows….then avoided the rest of the Star Trek shows….you might be one of the few that can make that claim. Star Trek was huge in my house..all the shows.
7. As In The Shadows mentioned….surprised you are not aware of Fringe…but you avoided The X-Files….and those two shows are often compared with each other.
8. So in looking at your comments….I am seeing a trend…..grabbing my Sherlock Holmes cap and pipe….I will take an educated guess. Most of the shows you watched were when you were a child….as lots of the really classic shows you have seen…..but many of the popular shows of my youth and today you have not seen too many. Knowing the number of movies you have seen….you must have picked going to the theater to see movies…versus staying at home to watch these movies. Am I close?
9. If I am correct….I think I am in the same boat as you. Over the last 15 years…I have only turned on the tv to watch one show in primetime…and that was Modern Family….and that didd not really last year long. The only shows I watch now are ones I binge watch…most recently I watched all 3 seasons of Ozark in about 5 days. But I always get my movies in.
Your efforts in this comment are greatly appreciated…you are the man. Continue to stay healthy and safe…especially now that Boston has replaced New York in the frontline of the Coronavirus fight.
amazing! thanks for sharing. Dan the Man.

He Bob…. Mike/Anonymous is a regular contributor….one day…I will go back and change all his Anonymous to Mike….and you will see him skyrocket up the top commentor leaders lst.”
WORK HORSE Fair enough -but let’s not get carried away. There are those of us who enjoy holding down the tops spots and like telling all our relatives and friends about it. You know what I mean: “Made it Myrna – I’m top of the Cogerson charts!”
Glad you enjoyed the weekend.
CONTINUED. And briefly away from the westerns Bill Shatner/Captain Kirk remained an icon via the T J hooker and Boston Legal shows – and through being one of the most fascinating larger than life characters off screen!
However many of the performers who monopolised the TV western cycle didn’t have a great acting range[indeed if Stallone had been about in those days he probably would have been a TV cowboy; and Jace mightn’t have figured at all because plummy voiced Brits -with one or two exceptions like Stewart Granger who actually turned up in a lead role in The Virginian – “don’t do cowboy”]. Also even the most popular TV shows don’t normally run for more than a decade at the outside. Bruce’s table above shows the decade+ shows as sporadic
Accordingly I have often wondered whatever happened to the following thespians who for a short while became stars via the TV westerns.
James Drury [The Virginian]
Robert Fuller and John Smith [Laramie]
Robert Horton [Flint McCullough of Wagon Train]
Jack Kelly [Maverick]
The Cartwrights [Bonanza]
Will Hutchins [Tenderfoot/aka Sugarfoot]
Ty Hardin [ Bronco]
Lee Majors [The Big Valley and The Virginian and later 6 Million Dollar Man/The Fall Guy]
I hope you are enjoying your break.
Hi Bob, I am enjoying a break from youtube, thanks.
With all the lockdowns across the world it’s a good excuse for tv stations to revive some of the old tv shows of the past. I think there are channels that show only old tv series, there’s one here that shows old UK sitcoms with some Carry On films repeated over and over.
TV westerns I enjoyed watching when I was young include – The High Chaparral, Bonanza, Lancer (remember that one?) and Alias Smith and Jones. Kung Fu too, a sort of eastern western.
And of course 60s and 70s TV was filled with detective shows, too numerous to mention, and some classic spy shows too.
HI STEVE: Thanks for your further thoughts on this subject and I’m glad you’re getting a bit of relaxation. I remember Lancer exceptionally well for two reasons apart from the content of the series itself:
1/Elizabeth Baur the lovely feminine lead who was in all 51 episodes of the series which ran from 1968-1970. Liz then moved over to Raymond Burr’s [wheelchair hero] Ironside series as Officer Fran Belding and was in 89 episodes of that show from 1971 until its cessation in 1975. “Where are they Now?” Liz was in just 7 more television productions after Ironside and one TV movie – 1993’s The Return or Ironside in which she reprised Fran Belding. Sadly she died 3 years ago of cancer at the relatively young age of 69.
2/An occurrence in my own private life. Sometime in the mid to late 1970s I was randomly selected by one of the big breweries to join a focus group of about a dozen people. The brewery was bringing a new beer onto the market and wanted the group to select one from a number of blends that we were asked to sample – ie it was a free night’s drinking!
When we had made our blend choice on a majority opinion we were then asked to choose a name and label for the new beer from a number of titles that were based on famous TV cowboy show titles such as Bronco/Maverick/Bonanza/Lancer. We chose Lancer and the beer went onto the market under that name. Sadly it lasted on the marketplace for just a couple of years and then disappeared as far as I can remember.
I was reading lately that James Drury [television’s The Virginian] ultimately went bald in real life but he said that one of the benefits of that decline was that he was able to go outdoors in private life [minus a toupee] and get peace because nobody recognised him – ie he didn’t have guys like you and The Work Horse ambushing him and asking him for his autograph and/or telling him how wonderful they thought he was! Anyway please keep safe.
Hey Steve….well that explains why there is no video. Seems like you are taking more and more breaks for the video making. Good call back to the shows of yesteryear. Lancer had a big part in Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood. Thanks again for checking out our different type of page. Good stuff as always.
James Drury passed away on April 6 at 85.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? – The Virginian dies 2 weeks ago today on 6 April 1920
James Drury, best known for playing the titular role on the TV series The Virginian, passed away on April 6, 2020. He was 85. He left a net worth of $1.5 million according to Celebrity Net Worth site.
The news was announced by his assistant Karen Lindsey on the actor’s official Facebook page. She wrote, “THE COWBOY took his last ride. It is with immense sadness that I let you all know that James Drury, our beloved Virginian and dear friend passed away this morning of natural causes, Monday, April 6, 2020. He will be missed so much. It is beyond words. Memorial service to be determined later.”
Born on April 18, 1934, in New York, the actor opened up about his experience playing The Virginian, which ran for nine seasons, the third-longest running western TV series behind Bonanza and Gunsmoke. In 2012, Drury told Chron, “It was the greatest experience in my life. I never had a bad day at work.”
James Drury, The Virginian – The Man with No Name Video from INSP – James Drury and the Virginian Cast talk about ‘the man with no name’.2013-06-23T01:00:20.000Z NOTE: Throughout the series The Virginian was never referred to by any name Christian or otherwise other than The Virginian. When talking ABOUT him other characters called him simply The Virginian; and when speaking directly TO him they mentioned no name at all.
Drury was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 1991. He had appeared in Sam Peckinpah’s 1962 classic Ride the High Country.
In an interview shared on Medium in 2017, Drury explained how it was thrilling to learn “The Virginian” still had a dedicated fan base. While he wasn’t a fan of traveling, always preferring to drive over flying in an airplane, Drury was grateful for those who supported the series and the longevity of success it has had.
“Going to these festivals gives me a chance to see a lot of my old friends,” Drury said. “For instance, I always enjoy catching up with my co-stars on The Virginian, such as Gary Clarke and Roberta Shore, or my buddy, actor Robert Fuller, who guest-starred in two episodes. It’s great to get together with people you worked side by side with over 50 years ago, and it feels like it was yesterday. We all have that immediacy because we remember when we were making films together. I’ve always enjoyed that aspect of it.”

Thanks Mike… a few of them are already on the table…Alias (208th) Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (244th), Lawman (251st) ….I will see about some of the other shows later tonight…I did not include variety shows…so Sonny and Cher, Donnie and Marie and The Carol Burnett Show (it would have been a Top 10 show) were not included. Good suggestions.
