Andy Griffith was an American actor, comedian and television producer. Drivel Part: Years ago I managed a grocery store on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. During my time in Nags Head (of Wright Brothers plane fame)….I actually got to meet Mr. Andy Griffith. Griffith reluctantly (on an island the options can be limited) shopped at my store though he was far from a fan of the grocery store chain that I worked for. So even if our encounters were not exactly the friendliest…..I am glad they did happen. It is safe to say the man was a legend on the Outer Banks. I always found Andy Griffith to be a likable and comforting presence on television, though I only saw episodes of his two main TV series occasionally as a kid. I also vaguely remember Griffith appearing in two min-series I really liked, Washington Behind Closed Doors and Centennial.
Later, I was a bit surprised to find this likable actor had made such a strong film debut, playing a rather devious and egotistical character in A Face in the Crowd. Considering the critical success of that film and the box office success of No Time For Sergeants the following year, it’s possible Griffith could have had an interesting film career, had he not turned to TV. However, he probably made the right decision given the popularity he enjoyed on the small screen.

Hey PhilHoF17….right there with you about how Griffith’s television persona was likable and comforting. I have not seen either of his mini-series….but many have commented on their quality….I will have to check them out. In the Danny Peary book, Alternate Oscars…..he gave Griffith the Oscar for his incredible performance in A Face in the Crowd. No Time For Sergeants is one of my mother-in law’s favorite movies.
As for my encounters…..I was star struck…….and even though he was very angry during those encounters…..it was still….a great experience to get yelled at by Sheriff Taylor….I really think the only thing that would have made him happy is for me to shut down the store….which my company was never going to do.
