Anthony Hopkins Movies

Want to know the best Anthony Hopkins movies?  How about the worst Anthony Hopkins movies?  Curious about Anthony Hopkins box office grosses or which Anthony Hopkins movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Anthony Hopkins movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which ones got the worst? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

I have received not one, not two but three requests to do a movie page on Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins (1937-), best known as Anthony Hopkins. The first time I noticed Anthony Hopkins was in his role in A Bridge Too Far in 1977. In a movie loaded with stars, I thought his role as Colonel Frost was one of the best parts in the movie. His most famous role is playing Hannibal Lecter in the Silence of the Lambs trilogy. He has appeared in over 60 movies since 1968. He has received three Oscar® nominations for Best Actor (Silence of the Lambs, Remains of the Day, Nixon) and one Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Amistad). He won the Oscar® for Best Actor in Silence of the Lambs.

His IMDb page shows over 135 acting credits since 1965. This page will rank 69 Anthony Hopkins movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

Anthony Hopkins Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Anthony Hopkins movies by co-stars of his movies.
  • Sort Anthony Hopkins movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Anthony Hopkins movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Anthony Hopkins movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Anthony Hopkins movie received.
  • Sort Anthony Hopkins movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • Use the sort and search buttons to make this a very interactive table.

  1. Will attach Steve’s latest You Tube video…Mr. Anthony Hopkins to this page later today. In the meanwhile he are my thoughts on Steve’s video and Sir Hopkins.

“Nice new subject. I have seen 34 of these movies and 42 overall (my page ranks 68 of his movies). #7 Thor Ragnarok….one of the best superhero movies. #12 The Bounty….Hopkins is very good in the movie. #14 A Bridge Too Far…one of my all-time favorite movies. I have always thought Hopkins has the best role in that movie. Love how he is debating whether to take his golf clubs at the beginning of the movie….and then how he ends up having the worst job during the operation….Operation Market Garden. #18 Titus completes my favorites list. What an ending. Not a huge fan of his highest rated movies….Remains of the Day, Silence of the Lambs and Howard’s End. Though I respect the quality of The Elephant Man…it is not a movie that begs for a re-watching. Voted up and shared. Hope you have better success than I did with my Hopkins page…I wrote my page over 7 years ago…and it has never drawn an audience.”

    1. Hi Bruce, so your tally is 34 of the 50 on this video, and 42 from the 68 on your chart, nice. I’ve seen 32 of the 50. A Bridge Too Far is one of my favorites too, the James Caan segment is probably the one everyone remembers. Oh I love Silence of the Lambs and was so glad to see it win Best Picture, not that impressed with the two Hannibal sequels. Manhunter was good but it didn’t have Hopkins. Thanks again for the comment, vote and share, always appreciated.

      1. Hey Steve….seems like you have done a lot of videos with stars of A Bridge Too Far….what a cast…..we have currently done pages on 9…..I would wager you have even more on your You Tube channel.

  2. 1 Some historians claim to see the influence of Brando in Tony Hopkins’ acting and one went as far as to even say that “Without Brando there would have been no Anthony Hopkins.” I do not possess the depth of analysis that would allow me to comment meaningfully on the first of these contentions and the second one seems to be rather hyperbolic. However there is no doubt that Sir Anthony personally was rather taken with Mr Mumbles as I saw an interview in which Tony referred to Marlon as one of the universally “special people”.

2 For me though Anthony Hopkins HIMSELF has always been a special actor and I love his screen presence and admire his authoritative characterisations and the wide range of roles that he can tackle such as those in Lion in Winter, Silence of the Lambs, Remains of the Day, Dracula and even the Bond-like hero in the routine action/adventure movie Alistair MacLean’s When Eight Bells Toll.

3 I am obviously not alone in my opinion for Sir Anthony currently stands at No 8 in IMDs “Ultimate List of the Greatest All time Actors” above even his own professional mentor Lord Olivier, and Wikipedia describes Sir A as one of the ”greatest living actors”. Indeed it is amazing that the Brits could produce such a talented person. [Sorry Steve I couldn’t resist that in retaliation for you gainsaying my vigilante heroes.] Anyway it will be appreciated from what I have said above that this page on him is very welcome to me and I regard it as another another triumph for this site.

  3. Trivia: When Spartacus was restored, Olivier’s dialogue in the bathing scene with Tony Curtis was lost. Hopkins recorded the dialogue for the restoration.

Well, my list of top 5 Anthony Hopkins is a bit bizarre. Despite my love of Hitchcock and the fact that I have seen them, I do not own my own copy of The Birds or Psycho as I am not a fan of horror films or anything particularily gory. As a result, I have not seen any of the Lector movies and have no intention of doing so. So here they are in alphabetical order:

    A Bridge Too Far

Chaplin-seen because I love silent films, though I prefer Buster Keaton

    Howards End

    Remains of the Day

    Shadowlands

    1. Hey Flora, I did not know that Hopkins did the voice of Olivier in the redubbing of Spartacus. I do not think you are the only person that will not watch Silence of the Lambs… Glad to see you mention A Bridge Too Far….that is the movie were I first noticed him…..he has one of the best parts in that all-star filled cast. I just recently watched Howard’s End…..and Remains of the Day is one I need to see…..I have a Roger Ebert movie review book….and every time I pick it up….I seem to read the review of Remains of the Day…over and over. As always thanks for the comments.

  4. A great page. The first one I voted up. That is because I haven’t thought about it, I usaully just comment. I need to go back and vote up some of your pages I checked out earlier.

Lets look at Dr, Lector for a moment. He is the smartest man in the room and knows it.

He will still help the FBI not out of concern for the victems or because it’s the right thing to do but just to show how smart he is.

He loves opera, art and other snobbish things like what wine goes with flava beans and liver.

And he kills people and eat them because they are RUDE.

Yet Sir Anthony Hopkins takes this arrogant, pretentious,Serial killer and makes the view ROOT for him! That is good acting.

As for Manhunter, I think Brian Cox portrayl of Dr Hannibal was chilling. He did a fantastic job as did William peterson as the FBI specialist and Tom Noonan as the killer. The Garden of Eden song playing in the background with the blind girl and the shootout was brillant. One of my favorite movies.

    1. Hey ruffridyer…..well it is about time you voted one of these hubs up…..lol…..good points on Hopkins’s performance….I remember when he won the Oscar for the movie…and some people where saying he was not in the movie long enough to win Best Actor… after seeing the movie you realize how his presence is everywhere in the movie….I agree that Manhunter is an awesome movie….way better than Red Dragon that came out later…..Noonan was better than Fiennes. Thanks for the comments.

      1. You are welcome. The problem with Fiennes Charactor was he was too handsome. Tom Noonan was sooo creepy. I remember Fiennes pumping iron to show how strong he was yet Noonan just entering a room his physical presence was intimadating. I could write a hub about Manhunter!

        Maybe I will, thanks again.

        1. I agree 100% with you ruffridyer….I had the same argument with my son….Noonan was very scary….Fiennes was trying to act scary….and I never believed it…and one of the main rules in movies….your movie is only as good as your villain…

  5. Nice Movie Page Cogerson

A brilliant actor on stage and screen and even when the movies are bad he’s still worth watching

    1. I agree 100% with you Shinkicker….Hopkins is a great actor….thanks for reading and commenting
