April 23rd – Your Chance To Be Part of an UMR Page – Results on Monday

Working on a different way to do an UMR Page.  Yes we will have a table….but we are looking for some additional input.  Your input will be in the page. Here is all you need to do.  Rank the Top 5 Wyatt Earps and Top 5 Doc Hollidays.  And then name the best Earp/Holliday screen team.

The Wyatt Earps:

  1. Randolph Scott in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Richard Dix in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Henry Fonda in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Burt Lancaster in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. James Garner in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Yulin Harris in 1971’s Doc
  7. Kurt Russell in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Kevin Costner in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

The Doc Hollidays:

  1. Cesar Romero in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Kent Taylor in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Victor Mature in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Kirk Douglas in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. Jason Robards in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Stacy Keach in 1971’s Doc
  7. Val Kilmer in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Dennis Quaid in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

Best Earp/Holliday Screen Team:

  1. Randolph Scott and Cesar Romero in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Richard Dix & Kent Taylor in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Henry Fonda & Victor Mature in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Burt Lancaster & Kirk Douglas in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. James Garner & Jason Robards in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Harris Yulin & Stacy Keach in 1971’s Doc
  7. Kurt Russell & Val Kilmer in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Kevin Costner & Dennis Quaid in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

Joel McCrea’s Wichita was not including because the movie does not take place in Tombstone…and Doc Holliday is nowhere to be found in the movie.

1934’s Frontier Marshall was not included because Wyatt Earp does not appear in the movie.  The main characters in that movie are Michael Wyatt and Doc Warren….just does not have the same ring.

  1. Well, I have not seen 3 of these 8 films, so I can only rank 5 anyway:

    Wyatt Earp:
    1. Garner 2. Lancaster 3. Fonda 4. Russel 5. Costner

    Doc Holliday:
    1. Douglas 2. Robards. 3. Kilmer 4. Mature 5. Quaid

Best screen team: Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas (sorry fans of the Tombstone team, but these are 2 screen legends here!)

My choice of James Garner as best Wyatt Earp may raise some eyebrows, but I think it was the first that explored a darker, more complex, less traditional characterization of Earp. The Hour of the Gun can be a rather boring film if you’re expecting traditional action and adventure, but if you give time, it’s quite a well crafted character study, and Garner conveys a virile, suppressed anger in subtle and understated manner – an atypical performance for him that was rather unappreciated at the time (and probably still relatively).

    1. Hey Phil…..I think we have seen the same 5 movies. Thanks for the votes. I think the Burt and Kirk team and the Kurt and Val team are the two gathering the most support.

As for Hour of the Gun….I work with a guy that loves that movie…so I watched it last week. It has some moments…..but it is not in my Top 3 Gunfight movies. I like James Garner…..but I have to say I was not as impressed as you were with the movie. Robards is the least sick of all the Hollidays. Kilmer looked like he could die at any moment…heck I do not even think Robards coughed until a hour into the movie….lol.

Maybe on a second viewing of the Hour of the Gun…the Garner performance will ring truer for me. Thanks for the visit and the comment.

      1. Yeah, I understand you about Hour of the Gun as I almost fell asleep the first I saw it…about 30 years ago. But I must have seen it 5 or 6 times since and it gets better as one notices the details and character development. I like the grim but realistic plot and atmosphere, revisionist approach, and musical score by Jerry Goldsmith . I’m almost sure Hour of the Gun influenced the 1968 Star Trek episode ‘Spectre of the Gun’, in which the Earps and Doc are portrayed as sombre killers. Anyway, glad to see the film got its own page on this site!

        1. Hey Phil. You might be right a repeat viewing of Hour of the Gun might be better. That movie obviously got me motivated to do Earp page.

Glad you found our Hour of the Gun page….this is a test for our future “dynamic” update…..when that is done….every movie will have it’s own page like Hour Of The Gun has.

          Thanks for the feedback.

  2. My Top 5:
