April 23rd – Your Chance To Be Part of an UMR Page – Results on Monday

Working on a different way to do an UMR Page.  Yes we will have a table….but we are looking for some additional input.  Your input will be in the page. Here is all you need to do.  Rank the Top 5 Wyatt Earps and Top 5 Doc Hollidays.  And then name the best Earp/Holliday screen team.

The Wyatt Earps:

  1. Randolph Scott in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Richard Dix in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Henry Fonda in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Burt Lancaster in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. James Garner in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Yulin Harris in 1971’s Doc
  7. Kurt Russell in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Kevin Costner in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

The Doc Hollidays:

  1. Cesar Romero in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Kent Taylor in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Victor Mature in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Kirk Douglas in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. Jason Robards in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Stacy Keach in 1971’s Doc
  7. Val Kilmer in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Dennis Quaid in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

Best Earp/Holliday Screen Team:

  1. Randolph Scott and Cesar Romero in 1939’s Frontier Marshall
  2. Richard Dix & Kent Taylor in 1942’s Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die
  3. Henry Fonda & Victor Mature in 1946’s My Darling Clementine
  4. Burt Lancaster & Kirk Douglas in 1957’s Gunfight At The O.K. Corral
  5. James Garner & Jason Robards in 1967’s Hour Of The Gun
  6. Harris Yulin & Stacy Keach in 1971’s Doc
  7. Kurt Russell & Val Kilmer in 1993’s Tombstone
  8. Kevin Costner & Dennis Quaid in 1994’s Wyatt Earp

Joel McCrea’s Wichita was not including because the movie does not take place in Tombstone…and Doc Holliday is nowhere to be found in the movie.

1934’s Frontier Marshall was not included because Wyatt Earp does not appear in the movie.  The main characters in that movie are Michael Wyatt and Doc Warren….just does not have the same ring.

  1. ” All right, Clanton… you called down the thunder, well now you’ve got it! You see that? It says United States Marshal! The Cowboys are finished, you understand? I see a red sash, I kill the man wearin’ it! So run, you cur… RUN! Tell all the other curs the law’s comin’! You tell ’em I’M coming… and hell’s coming with me, you hear?… HELL’S COMING WITH ME!”

I wrote an article on films featuring Wyatt Earp at Hubpages a few years ago, so I ask me any question I dare you, I double dare you! 🙂

John Ford would brag that ‘My Darling Clementine’ was the most accurate portrayal of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and the OK Corral on film and it turned out to be one of the most inaccurate, he even moved the town of Tombstone to Monument Valley, why? Because he likes Monument Valley.

Two of my favorite actors Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas were in one of my favorite westerns – ‘Gunfight at the OK Corral’ – so I’ll pick that as my favorite movie and team.

Not far behind would be Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer in the excellnt ‘Tombstone’, my favorite western of the past 40 years.

So my rankings will be as follows –

Wyatt Earp – Lancaster, Russell, Fonda, Costner, Garner
Doc Holliday – Douglas, Kilmer, Quaid, Mature, Robards
    Best Team – Lancaster/Douglas, Russell/ Kilmer, Fonda/ Mature, Costner/Quaid, Garner/Robards

I’ve never been a fan of ‘Hour of the Gun’ despite it being directed by John Sturges. I thought it too slow moving and lackluster.

Did you know – in all those shootouts Wyatt Earp was never shot and wounded, the closest he got was a bullet hole in his coat at the OK Corral, he also had the heel of his boot shot off.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for your most excellent comment. I will be digging out your HubPage Earp page and including it here…..that is if I can find my way back to HubPages without getting lost.

Tombstone is filled with some great movie lines….and I never get tired of hearing them. Love the Russell one you listed at first part of your comment.

Yeah…My Darling Clementine is one of the worst when it comes to telling the truth…..but Ford made a classic for sure.

So far Gunfight and Tombstone seem to be the favorites….with Hour of the Gun getting some surprise support. I agree with you about Hour of the Gun….I was not impressed with that at all.

Yep Wyatt never got shot….that only adds to the legend. Thanks for the votes…they have been added to the totals.

  2. After the top 3 the rest are too hard to rank.
    Fonda, Scott, Yulin

    Kilmer, Robards, Douglas

  3. 1. Lancaster, Russell, Fonda, Scott, Garner
    2. Quaid, Kilmer, Mature, Keach, Douglas
    3. Lancaster & Douglas

  4. Interesting. I have seen 7 of this movies. I liked many of them. I have not seen the Dix version.

Wyatt Earp: Kurt Russell in Tombstone, Burt Lancaster in Gunfight, Henry Fonda in Clementine, James Garner in Hour of the Gun and Randolph Scott in Frontier Marshall. Did not like Costner at all in Wyatt Earp while I thought Harris Yulin had some nice moments in Doc.

John Henry Holliday: Val Kilmer in Tombstone, Dennis Quaid in Wyatt, Victor Mature in Clementin, Kirk Douglas in Gunfight and Jason Robards in Hour of the Gun

As for best screen team. Gotta go with my top two picks here. I feel their on screen friendship comes across the best. Gunfight is ok here, but Lancaster and Douglas seem to not always be on the same side.

    1. Wow In the Shadows….glad my Earp/Holliday page got you out of the Shadows. Thanks for the votes.

  5. Best Wyatts: Kurt Russell, Burt Lancaster, James Gardner

Best Docs: Val Kilmer, Dennis Quaid, Jason Robards
