  1. My Top 5 Doc Hollidays
    1. My favorite Doc Holiday portrayal is by Kirk Douglas.
    2. Jason Robards “Hour of the gun”
    3. Stacy Keach in the almost forgotten “Doc”
    4. Dennis Quaid. The problem with “Wyatt Earp” is that it was essentially two movies in one, with the first one being deadly boring
    5. Victor Mature. John Ford got Mature to actually act in that one.

  2. Cogerson

Restricting to the actors mentioned, my favorites are Burt and Kirk. The movie otherwise I thought fairly average, but the two stars were in great form. Garner and Robards were a pretty good pair.
The worst–Kent Taylor as Doc for certain, no pizazz at all. Dix was better, but over the hill for being cast as Earp..
*my own favorite, and the first one I saw, was on the TV show “You are There” hosted by Walter Cronkite. This was a fifties program which presented historical events with CBS reporters being on the scene. (to just get a flavor, try The sinking of the Tittanic or the Chicago fire episodes over on you tube–Unfortunately, the gunfight at the OK Corral episode doesn’t seem available) Robert Bray was Earp. Barry Atwater Doc. DeForest Kelley was Ike Clanton. I remember Earp being calmly interviewed in his hotel room prior to the shootout.
There is also an excellent “based on” version Law and Order from 1932. Walter Huston was the Earp character, called Frame Johnson. Harry Carey was the Doc character, called Ed Brandt. This was not historically accurate, as the gunfight was far bloodier, with only Huston surviving–but in fairness, the other versions aren’t accurate for the most part either. The reproduction of old Tombstone is probably the most visually accurate in this one.
**I agree with Steve that Ford’s version displays his weaknesses as well as strengths, and filming in Monument Valley leads to the strange scenes of a herd of cattle being kept out where there is no grass or water. I guess Ford didn’t expect us old farm boys to notice.

      I see you want 5

      Earps
      1—Burt Lancaster
      2—James Garner
      3—Richard Dix
      4—Randolph Scott
      5—none

      Docs
      1—Kirk Douglas
      2—Jason Robards
      3—Stacy Keach
      4—Val Kilmer
      5—Victor Mature

*Dix would have been top casting if he were younger. As is, I decided to give him a nod.

**Henry Fonda & Victor Mature gave good performances, but I don’t think they were at all like the historical characters. Mature was a physician! I gave Mature a vote because he gave perhaps his best ever performance even if miscast. Fonda I’ll pass on because when he played Lincoln he actually played Lincoln. His Earp was just his generic western turn, sort of like if John Wayne in Rio Bravo was named Wyatt Earp.

***My 5th Earp would be Walter Huston.

      1. Hey John…thanks for revisiting with your Top 5. In the end…your top picks Burt and Kirk ended up in 2nd place not to bad. The biggest surprise to me was Garner getting so much attention. I just saw Hour of the Gun last week (probably why I decided to do this page)….and I thought it was ok….but more than a little slow.

Good comments on Mature…and Fonda. I blame Danny Peary of Cult Movies fame for influencing me to make Fonda first….I have read his breakdown on Fonda’s Earp for years….and I think it has more than influenced my thinking.

Law and Order did not make this page…but if I ever expand this page…I will be sure to include that one.

    2. Hey John….poor Kent Taylor got nothing but bad comments…of the 16 actors mentioned….he got no votes and listed as the worst Doc 3 times. That does not make me want to rush out and see that movie.

I am not thinking John Ford would appreciate making movies in 2017….as places like IMDb and Reddit would probably really point out issues like taking a true story and screwing up all the details.

You Are There sounds like a good one to watch if it can ever be found. I kept wanting to include the Star Trek Gunfight episode….but the closest I could come up with was getting a picture of Bones in the page…lol. Thanks for the feedback.

  3. Costner
    Russell
    Garner
    Lancaster
    Fonda
    Scott
    Yulin
    Dix

    Quaid
    Robards
    Kilmer
    Keach
    Romero
    Robards
    Taylor
    Mature

Mature is one of the worst actors ever. Almost ruins My Darling Clementine

    1. Hey Tracie thanks for your entire breakdown of 1 to 8. I am impressed that you have seen all 8o f them.
