Drivel Part: Ok…when Flora first suggested we do an Arlene Dahl page…our first response was…Who? Since being enlightened by Flora…it seems we have been seeing Arlene Dahl’s name everywhere we turn. Recently we watched our first Arlene Dahl movie…1954’s Woman’s World. Then Steve Lensman did a Lex Barker (one of her husbands) page and she got mentioned again. Well today, Bob, brought up Arlene Dahl in one of his comments. That was the final sign….seems the forces that be…want us to do a Arlene Dahl page….and we finally listened….and now have an UMR Dahl page.

Arlene Dahl came to my attention with Journey to the Center of the earth, but it was later in my life, in her moderatly budgetet movies, that I started to really like her. Of the 7 movies I’ve seen her in, I really enjoyed Wicked as they come, Slightly Scarlett, She played with Fire/Fortune is a woman. She was quite capable of making life miserable for her man in some movies 😉 As I mentioned more than once, I loved Falcon Crest in my youth, so I was aware of Miss Dahl being the mother of Lorenzo Lamas, always hoping for a guest appearance. I don’t think that ever happened, but she did join her son in one of his movies (1991’s Night of the Warrior) as well as his TV series Renegade. As Bob has already said in more elegant words than this foreigner could, Miss Dahl was a very beautiful woman, and though like so many others, while never reaching the career heights of those “Chosen Few”, remains a vital and lovely part of Hollywood History. Thank you for extending UMR to those bunch of actors and actresses without whom the american movie history would be so much less diverse and fascinating!
Just noticed the HQ Arlene pic on top of this page- Beautiful!
🙂
Hey Lupino…thanks for the thoughts on Arlene Dahl….I just recently watched my first Dahl movie….but I really liked it….Woman’s World. So I am thinking I should check out more of her more movies. Sounds you really enjoyed her movies from the mid 1950s to the end of the 1950s. Usuallly we I do a new page…one or two movies make my list of movies to watch….in this case Slightly Scarlet is one of those movies. Another connection to Falcon Crest….just shows how it is a small world.
Tally count…looks like your 7 is good enough for a three way tie for first place….with Flora and Bern1960. Bern1960 has shared her total…but had a problem getting the comment on the page. Thanks for the comment, the visit and the tally count.
1 LUPINO’s final sentence is a fine conclusion to a comprehensive post which from my perspective may not have picked up one salient point which is that on this site there is among actresses just a Chosen One The Coming Attractions suggest that the idolatry concerned may be demonstrated once again when March Madness spreads and runs away with penetrating analysis.
2 However if Lupino decides to go along for the ride I can guarantee that it WILL be fun but I would recommend that when the frenzy reaches a crescendo Lupino should give consideration to observing the spirit of Burt Lancaster’s guidance to audiences when in the opening scene of The Crimson Pirate he cautioned “Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see.”
Dear Bob,
you can’t know how happy I am to finally have found someone who agrees with me that among actresses there is only a chosen ONE! But let’s be fair to the likes of Crawford, Davis, Stanwyck, Loy, Sidney, Hepburn…they deserve their hard earned places beyond the throne occupied by Miss Margaret Sullavan!
(Seems this german fool decided to join you on the offered funride, but be aware that he knows that he stands no chance against thy powerful mastering of thy native tongue!)
Hey Lupino…..not thinking Bob is buying Margaret Sullavan on the throne…Deanna Durbin yes….but not Ms. Norfolk…Margaret Sullavan. In my upcoming….”just for fun proves nothing March Movie madness tournament) two of your favorites did not make the field. Sullavan did not have enough movies….and we have yet to do a Sidney page….but maybe next year. https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/2017/03/march-11th-umr-movie-tournament-brackets/
Your English is outstanding….as Bruce Willis says in The Fifth Element….”I only know two languages…..English and Bad English”……so your ability to communicate so well in a foreign language is indeed impressive.
As always…thanks for the feedback.
Hey Lupino…..here in my hotel in Dublin, Virginia….you will be happy to know that I just printed up the IMDb page (actually 7 pages) on Sylvia Sidney…which is usually when I am getting serious about doing an UMR page on somebody.
Hey Lupino….hanging out with Sylvia Sidney on a Sunday night in Dublin, Virginia. Here is the breakdown (I do this with all of my pages when I start researching them)….107 IMDb credits from 1929 to 1998. 65 were television roles, 2 were shorts and 1 was uncredited….that leaves 39 movies to research. I already have 15 of her movies in my database. That leaves 24 movies….2 do not look like they were released in North American theaters. 13 I feel confident my sources can help get a box office number…so that leaves 9 movies from 1929 to 1934 that will be difficult to find information on. Added bonus most are Paramount movies. Just thought you would like to know how your requested Sidney page is progressing.
BRUCE/LUPINO/STEVE
1 If Lupino can get a momentum behind Margaret Sullivan to replace Loy’s dominance of this site he can count me in and I will make her my new Chosen One.
2 The name suggested to me that Lupino is not American but otherwise I would have assumed he was because of his very fluent posts about American movies. However a friend of mine who lectures in languages opines that the actual Englishman is the most silver-tongued speaker on earth so if that is indeed the case Steve would be the Ronald Reagan of this site – ie The Great Communicator. As somebody once said though “We are all foreigners.” and certainly to me Cogerson fine fellow though no doubt he be is a foreigner. Fine quote from Bruce passed on to us by Bruce!!
Hey Bob….glad you have been paying attention….lol.
The Loy fans are already packing in the fans for our upcoming tournament. And like a good team they refuse to talk about a possible Elite 8 matchup with Katharine Hepburn….lol.
Loy, Lupino or Sullavan? My favorite actress is Elisabeth Shue….had a mad crush on her since the mid 1980s.
Actually a Sidney page could be coming soon. 🙂
Hey Bob….in my just for fun March movie tournament I made sure to bend some rules and include one Deanna Durbin….even though she did not have enough movies to qualify….but it will only be a problem if she reaches the final matchup.
The Chose One has fallen to a 2 seed……with Crawford being a 5 seed….to a Davis 1 seed.
I think Lupino is indeed along for the ride…..I dare say….this site offers up more classic movie sites than any other site….I of course can be wrong.
“Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see.” I like it.
I like John’s practice of throwing your own words back to you such as “The Chosen One has fallen to a 2 seed”
BOB’s RESPONSE -“Encouraged now to begin and live in a world to his liking at last.”
🙂
Hey Bruce
thanks for the heads up on the Sidney page! I am really looking forward to that one 🙂 So it’s the early Paramount pictures that make the most troubles…no surprise there, right?
It’s very kind of you (and Bob) to compliment me on my english, but to be honest, I don’t always get the meaning of what I am reading here…Currently, I have some problems understanding the rules of the March tournaments, and I am not sure if it was a clever move on my part to accept Bob’s original “challenge”…but to say it with
Osgood Fielding III: “Nobody is perfect” -or with the tagline from Yentl: “Nothing’s impossible”! Seems it’s time to do some serious research on the two “Chosen Ones” of this site…the Misses Loy and Crawford 😉
Hey Lupino….don’t worry about understanding Bob….half the time I do not either….lol.
As for the chosen one….this comes from a statement I made many moons ago….after updating my Myrna Loy page…I realized she had the biggest career box office total of all the actresses in my database. Bob disagreed with that statement….and for months now we have been arguing (on friendly terms) of the star wattage of Loy.
As for the March madness tournament….it basically compares UMR scores from one actor/actress to another….in the end….one will be left standing. I have been doing this the last 3 years…Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart…won the first two years…last year….I put the results on the website…Cary Grant won….so I figured I would do the same thing this year. Today…there are 64 in each tournament….by the end of the weekend….that will be down to 16 in each tournament.
Personally…I am hoping Loy will be the winner. As for Sidney….I think…she might be ready in the next few days.
Hey Bruce,
thanks for clarifying 🙂
Just came back from watching “Skull Island”, always been a huge King Kong Fan…the cinema was not even half. filled, which surprised me- but I had a lot of fun watching Kong on a really huge screen with 3D an added bonus! So, no more classics for me today, it doesn’t happen too often these days that I enjoy a “no brains required” popcorn movie this much.
BTW, wasn’t Loy labeled Queen of Hollywood to Gables King in the 30’s?
Hey Lupino….glad you liked Kong: Skull Island….I look forward to seeing that as well. Today…even the most popular movie barely reaches capacity…due to so many showings and so many theaters. I remember seeing Star Wars: A Force Awakens in a nearly empty theater four days after it opened….granted it was on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
You are 100%….Loy was the Queen to Gable’s King….as she was one of the most popular stars in the 1930s…as well as the 1940s. Women all over the world had surgery to look like her. These are stats and facts that Bob always chooses to ignore…lol. Thanks for the return visit.
1 BRUCE [That was quick! so in appreciation I have allowed my response post to jump the queue] Other than for their acting qualities I never got excited about the screen sirens of the 1950s because I saw no point in craving what I couldn’t have. However if I had been told that one of them would meet me outside after the show for an actual date Rhonda would have been 1st choice, Esther [Raw Mind in Eden] Williams 2nd and Arlene 3rd in preference to for example MM or Rita Hayworth
2 Slightly Scarlet – which refers to the colour of Arlene’s hair in that movie -whilst a low grosser and lukewarmly received with 65%** in your critic/audience column is one of my favourites among the movies of Rhonda or John Payne and my very favourite Dahl flick. It is a gangster yarn with the two beauties playing sisters who form a love triangle with Payne and if I recall correctly Arlene in fine form is nymphomaniacal but John ends up with Rhonda. Your unusual little posed still of the female pair is admired most appreciated. **68% in IMDB
3 Arlene was also in her element playing Van Heflin’s adulterous social-climbing wife in Woman World which was my 2nd favourite Dahl movie. In my eyes in that kind of role she looked and behaved like Eleanor Parker. My 3rd fave was her first pairing with Payne in Caribbean [aka Caribbean Gold] which was on a double bill here with Somebody Loves Me Betty Hutton’s final hit. Told you we got great value for money back then
4 4th was Fortune is a Woman [aka She played with Fire on your page ] the little British thriller starring Englishman Jack Hawkins.I might add that I personally would not object to a Lensman Hawkins video because Jack is one of my top favourites of the old British cinema and anyway a Hawkins presentation would enable Steve to show off another Chuck poster.
5 For me it’s icing on the cake that you can now produce pages on actresses who never became A list stars but who were nonetheless important to the format of classic era movies. Well done and much appreciated.
Arlene Dahl was familiar to me from the Jules Verne classic ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’, a favorite of mine since childhood and featuring one of my favorite James Mason roles.
The only other films I remember watching from the chart are – Three Little Words, Here Come the Girls and Ambush. So that’s 4 out of 25 for me.
Good to see Journey to the Center topping the UMR and critics charts, My Wild Irish Rose topping the box office chart? Not familiar with that one, Center of the Earth was hopefully a bigger worldwide success.
Arlene is 91 years old! All her co-stars must have all passed away by now. Olivia de Havilland will be 101 in July! [cue gasps] She must be the oldest living Hollywood legend.
Good work as always Bruce. Voted Up!
Hey Steve….thanks for checking out our Arlene Dahl page. Even with Flora’s tally being Farley low (7)….we still combined could not top her….as I only brought one movie to the party…..so combined we are at 5. I can see little Stevie having a crush on Arlene Dahl while watching Journey To The Center of the Earth (which somehow I have not seen). At one point in my life I was married to a red head….so part of me liked looking for good pictures of her. Just don’t tell WoC (not a red head)..lol.
I liked the stats I found on her that she said she was the 3rd most famous “Arlene” in history….not sure how they come up with that ranking…but I found it fun. I bet you are in the Top 5 of Steve Lensmans in the world….hopefully Cogerson can crack the Top 10…lol. Thanks a always for the feedback.
Strange things that connect category. I’ve been watching some of the old Joey Bishop situation comedy series on Antenna TV. Joey’s wife on the series from 1962 to 1965 is Abby Dalton. On the next to the end of the series, seen yesterday Abby gives birth for the 2nd time. They use her real kids so her daughter Kathleen Kinmont Smith is used. Abby is married to a guy named Smith at the time. Flash forward 20 years and Abby is a regular on Falcon Crest playing the daughter of Jane Wyman and the mother of Lorenzo Lamas. Her daughter Kathleen becomes Mrs. Lorenzo Lamas in real life (only 4 years though).

Hey Dan….thanks for all the information on Arlene Dahl.
1. Wow only 4 Oscar winners in her history….I find that unusual especially since she did most of movies at MGM….seems it should be higher….then again….most of these movies are pretty unknown to me.
2. Arlene and Arthur sitting in a tree……lol. Without Mr. Tovey her movie total would be really low, when looking at her connections to the current Oracle list.
3. Love the connections to the current Top 10….especially the Caine ones(of course).
Thanks for sharing all of this information…..you are the man.
Hey Dan…..you are right…how some things are connected in weird ways. Good information on the Joey Bishop show and those “strange” connections.
Thanks for doing my requested page on Arlene Dahl. Glad to know that you now know who she is.
What did you think of Woman’s World?
The highest ranked film I have seen is Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The lowest ranked film I have seen is Kisses for my President.
The highest ranked film I have not seen is My Wild Irish Rose.
So far, I have seen seven Arlene Dahl movies, four of which are in the top 5: no order:
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Three Little Words
Woman’s World
The Bride Goes Wild
Scene of the Crime
Slightly Scarlett
Kisses for My President
My favourite movie is Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
Hey Flora
1. Glad you found your Arlene Dahl requested page.
2. My tally is a lonely 1. But I really really enjoyed that one…she has one of seven great performances in that one. I really liked how they almost made it like a murder mystery….with Clifton Webb as the detective who reveals who got the job versus who was the murderer.
3. I will have to check some of your favorite Dahl movies.
4. I am beginning to think My Wild Irish Rose is one the least known major hits of all-time.
5. As always thanks for the visit, comment and suggestion.
