Audie Murphy (1925-1971) was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II.  After the war, Murphy became a movie star. His most famous role was playing himself in 1955’s To Hell and Back.  That movie was based on his 1949 memoirs of the same name. His IMDb page shows 51 acting credits from 1948-1969. This page ranks Audie Murphy movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, documentaries and shorts were not included in the rankings.

Drivel part of the page:  Seems like Audie Murphy has been on our request hotline for a very long time.  So long ago that we can not remember if Dan, Lyle or Laurent requested him first. Well, finally we have finished our Audie Murphy page.  Sadly, when we got to the 1960s….. box office numbers for his movies became very hard to find.  So, 4 of his movies did not make the following table:  Those movies are listed in the “Possibly Interesting Facts” part of the page with their critic audience rating.

  1. I have made one of my regular visits to your excellent Audie Murphy page, for me a valuable companion piece to the book on Murphy that you kindly sent me. On this occasion I noticed for the first time [wake up Bob!] that instead of listing Seven Ways FROM Sundown you have called the movie concerned Seven Ways TO Sundown [just as you prefer to use Chained instead of the proper Chain Lighting in your reference to a Bogie film.]

Sorry Humphrey but the Work Horse has beaten me on Chain/Chained: I’ve given up and will not mention it again. No pun intended but as the saying goes “You can lead a Horse to water but you can’t make it drink!”

However the title of the Murphy film has greater significance than usual for a movie as it is actually a play on his character in that movie, Seven Jones, so named by his mother because he was the 7th child born into her large family. Cogerson-like she preferred to use stats, rather than the normal Christian names, to make distinctions between her children!

LOOSELY RELATED TRIVIA: Murphy’s 1953 film Tumbleweed was named after his Horse in that film, which looked deceptively insignificant and didn’t impress Audie at first when it was thrust upon him; but actually turned out to be a super Work Horse which saved his master’s bacon with the bad guys on many occasions in the way that traditionally Trigger did for Roy Rogers; Champion did for Gene Autry; Blackjack did for Allan Rocky Lane; Tony did for Tom Mix; and [if I may mix my animals -again no pun intended] Asta did for The Thin Woman.

  2. Hey Cogerson….No Name on the Bullet is playing on Grit TV tonight, PST, CA at 5 pm. Comes on right after The Kid from Texas and I will watch it after current Audie Murphy movie I’m watching is finished. I grew up watching all his movies. My last name growing up was Murphy but no relation.

    1. Hey Janice….thanks for this information….hopefully some Murphy fans were able to check those movies out. Good stuff.

  3. to me audie murphy was a great actor. I am so sorry that a plane crash killed him. Enough said about private planes. I will always watch his movies.

  4. Hey Bob and Steve…this is in response to the last three Audie comments…..did it here….because it was getting confusing finding the place to comment back.

    1. There is only one Joel Hirschhorn……Bob says thank goodness….lol.
    2. As Bob pointed out other than Rating The Movie Stars….he wrote An Idiots Guide to Song Writing…..but other than that he did no other books.
    3. He concentrated on his musical career more….and has two Oscars for his efforts.
    4. Glad the Murphy book has some good stills.
    5. I have not seen Beyond Glory….I will have to check that one out.
    6. Night Passage has a wonderful cast…..Dan Duryea is fun to watch in that one.
    7. Still trying to find No Name on the Bullet…amazingly…..all of my sources 8 cities very close and 8 cities that have nice DVD libraries….none have many Audie Murphy movies.
    8. I know his movies play on TCM often….but I rarely watch television…..and when I do it is to watch sports.
    Good stuff as always.
