TGT was treated so badly. It wasn’t shown in the cinemas in Austria and I think that happened in many other countries as well. First all the postponements and then nothing. So the bad box office is no big surprise at all. That wouldn’t have happened in Barbra’s prime…
That’s what I’ve always said. If TGT is not a great success, has the impact on the financing of Gypsy. But that time, no one believed me.
Its interesting to see how the Guilt Trip factors into her overall career and box office summary. As someone said on here youre as good as your last movie ($ wise). She delivered a great performance I blame the studio for pushing it back to Christmas (they were so afraid of whatever action hero movie was coming out – a whole different market). Also I think it was a sub par script/direction and co-star.
And I honestly wonder if this has had any impact on Gypsy. If the film would have done half the biz of MTF Im sure it would have been pushed on fast track by the studio.
Hey Davegchicago…..yep I agree with you about The Guilt Trip.
If these figures can be trusted, it is just impossible Hollywood wouldn’t court her to this day. It is her prerogative to turn down offers, but no fan in its right mind can deny she’s accountable for the missed opportunities. Whoever was in charge of The Guilt Trip campaign should be hanged, for s/he jeopardized her incredible track record. They say that in Hollywood, you’re only as good as your last movie. Her legend is set (hello, we all know that!!!), thus more reasons to dare. Unless the “fat lady — one more movie” charade is insincere.
Hey Chris….these box office numbers come from Variety and box office mojo….so I am sure they can be trusted…..I agree here legend is set and will last a very long time
