I have seen just 7 of Benicio’s movies and to be honest I cannot remember him too well in any of them. Pouring over the posters and cast lists of the 36 movies mentioned in the tables above I could detect only 5 movies, sporadically released, in which he was the top-billed star so I must presume that he is a prestige actor rather than one who can open a movie.
However, commercially at a personal level he has been highly successful having accumulated over the last 32 years a net worth of $45 million according to Celebrity Net Worth; and as an actor IMDB credits him with an excellent 48 awards and 71 noms and it ranks him the 67th greatest among the 100 best ACTORS as such of all time.
However although he has been acting since 1987 he is not one of those who is mentioned as even being considered for inclusion in Bruce’s Greatest Male Legends 1950-2010 list, and I haven’t seen him in any other of WH’s ranking lists. In light of those of his achievements that I have just described though he clearly deserves a page on this all-embracing site.
Hey Bob. Thanks for the feedback on our Benicio Del Toro page. I agree….he is a supporting actor more than a leading actor. Hmmm…interesting that IMDb lists him that high. He would not even be considered in my rankings…as supporting actors generally get booted off the lists when comparing stats…but that is just the way I do it. Thanks for the tally count…7 seen actually gives you a decent percentage. I would recommend Swimming With Sharks…not for his performance (it is very small)…but it is a nice thriller set in the movie making world….with an ending that blew me away on first viewing…yet on repeat viewings is all mapped out for you…a mini-The Sixth Sense. As always…good stuff.
HI BRUCE: IMDB’s lists rank the stars mainly in accordance with perceived acting ability and acting awards/nominations regardless of star stature so that big box office stars like The
Rock and Stallone don’t get onto IMDB’s lists.
Here’s how IMDB rates Benicio under its Top 3 areas of key criteria:
Acting ability 4.9 stars
Overall versatility 4.8 stars
Role transformation 4.9 stars
5 stars are the maximum [one more than from Joel!] and Brando and Nicholson at the top of the list get 5 stars in all three of those categories. A full explanation of IMDB’s criteria is set out below as I thought it would be of passing interest to you.
Whatever one thinks of their rankings at least they, like you, DO publish criteria. I have no idea whatsoever what the criteria was that AFI for example used in determining its 50 greatest Legends and therefore I am mystified that the Duke doesn’t make the top 10 on the male list and people like Ava Gardner and Lauren Bacall are on the female list at all.
An even greater mystery to me is as we have discussed before is that mega legends like Hope, Crosby and my Doris are excluded from the AFI lists and it is a great credit to your Top 50 stars book that it does include them and in my estimation all of the very top legends who would be in the Crosby/Hope bracket.
I meant to say that Benicio reminds me slightly in appearance of Chaz Palminteri [The Usual Suspects/A Bronx Tale/Jade/Legend].

i saw 15 including 9 of top 10. 10 and favorites : fearless(a true hidden gem), usual suspects. 9 not favorite snatch ( brad pitt dialect is incredible). hidden gem swimming with sharks 8. i love del toros acting. his UMR list jumps out at me for the big budget vehicles i rated low: liscence to kill 4, avengers infinity war 1, sin city 6, thor dark world 7, fear and loathing in las vegas 4. lots of disappointments.
BDT has made a lot more movies than I realized! Favorites would include The Hunted, Sin City, The Usual Suspects, The Pledge and Traffic.
