Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information.

Since 1927, there have been 97 Best Actor Oscar Winners. This page will rank all 97 movies from Best to Worst in five different sortable columns of information.  If you use the sort and search buttons the massive table becomes very interactive.

Table Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In The Table Below

The really cool thing about ther table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort by the winners
  • Sort by actual domestic box office grosses (in millions)
  • Sort by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort by critic reviews and audiences voting.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins
  • Sort Best Actor Oscar Winners by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.  The ceiling to earn points for box office is $200 million…once a movie passes that mark it stops earning points in that category.

  1. Cogerson, another wonderful hub. Surprised myself even that I have seen every one of the top 10 by box office and I have seen all but one (the Pianist) on the Critics list. It’s areal struggle to pick a favourite (in terms of the ‘actor’ award) from the entire list, my favourites would be To Kill A mockingbird, Gregory Peck’s acting is so understated, I like him in most of his films. I also love Alec Guinness in Bridge On The River Kwai(and again I love him in his other movies) and Gary Cooper in Sergeant York. I am just wondering why I haven’t seen too many of these movies lately, time for a trip to Play.Com. Voted up, very interesting.

    1. Thanks for checking out part 2 in my Oscar series…your comment has me motivated to start working on part 3 of that series. Sounds like you have been able to watch lots of the great Oscar winning performances. I love Peck in Mockingbird, Guinness in Bridge….although I think I prefer Cooper in High Noon more than Sergeant York…but they are both great movies. I am sure Play.com can help you find some of the performances you always wanted to watch…thanks for the visit and the votes.

  2. HI, Cogerson – voted up and awesome because you put so much work into this one (and all of them). Seeing these lists of films gives me ideas for what I want to see or see again – some real gems.

    1. Hey Dolores…thanks for the votes up and for visiting this hub. I am glad you are getting some ideas of movies to watch from my list…and I agree there are lots of real gems on the list. Thanks for compliment.

  3. Hey Cogerson, great stuff as usual. Really enjoy reading all the information you provide. So you might be a little disappointed with this number, but I have only seen 11 out of the 84. Sorry Pops, 3 are in the top 10. Keep up your amazing work. Oh hey did I tell you that John Cusack is up here filming a movie right now.

    1. Hey Bryan…only 3?…are you sure you are my son?…lol. 11 is not bad for a punk little kid. But thanks for the compliment and the comment. You did not mention that Cusack was filming near you…a quick look at IMDB and I assume the movie is called The Frozen Ground…which also stars Nicolas Cage is he up there as well? I am sure they waited for the snow to get pretty heavy before they started filming…intersting information….we might have to come to Alaska for Christmas….and like Flora said….Happy Veteran’s Day …you make your father proud.

      1. Flora, thanks for the Vet Day wishes. Indeed, Cusack, Cage, Vanessa Hudgens, and the dad from transformers are all here. One of my friends has met them a few times at the restaraunt/bar she works at. Pretty cool I am going to try and see if I can get my timing down. Yes I guess they needed the snow, the movie is about a serial killer who was here in the 80’s I believe. He would get the girl and then release them but then hunt them. Pretty messed up, Cusack is playing the cop, I think.

        1. Hey BryRog57…..very cool information…I had to go to Katie to figure out who Vanessa Hudgens is…but I am very familiar with Cage and Cusack. I do believe Nicolas Cage plays the cop and Cusack plays the killer. So I am sure the High School Musical girl will play the victim that survives. I think you should check out the restaurant/bar they are visiting. Sounds like a pretty cool opportunity. Thanks for the information.

  4. Excellent movie page with intriguing lists. I’m impressed that you’ve seen 83 of the 84 movies. I’ve seen 8 of the top 10 box office hits and 9 of the top 10 as voted by critics and audiences. On the movie score list, I’ve managed to see 9 of the top 10, 15 of the top 20, and 22 of the top 30, but after that, my totals fall off pretty dramatically to the point where I’ve seen slightly fewer than half of the 84. I’m not a big fan of musicals, but I guess I’ll have to see My Fair Lady. And a number of the others have been on my must-see list for a while.

I don’t think that Forrest Gump was Tom Hanks’ best performance, but I’m surprised by the anti-Forrest Gump comments. I still enjoy the movie, as do my kids. We had dinner at the Bubba Gump’s restaurant in Times Square a couple weeks ago, and they aced the waiter’s movie trivia questions.

I’m not surprised at the anti-Adam Sandler comments; I agree with them. But then again, I don’t see him on the Best Actor list. I re-sorted the columns alphabetically by actor, just to make sure. 🙂

    1. Hey Brianlokker…a couple of years I went through all the major Oscar winning movies….it was a great challenge…and only one actor escaped without me viewing the movie…and two years later I still have not been able to find The Last Command.

22 out of 30 is a great percentage(almost 74%)….there are many great performances between 31 and 84….but also some that you are not missing too much. I did a Best Movie Oscar hub as well….and that is when I first saw this anti-Forrest Gump opinion….I always thought everybody love the movie….but it appears not to be the case. Bubba Gumps sounds like a great place to visit…glad you had a good time there.

As for Adam Sandler….you did not miss anything….he has not even come close to an Oscar nomination…much less an Oscar win….I think he became the subject of conversation if only because he represents the opposite of the Best Actor winners…lol.

Glad to see that you were using the sort button….I have had close to 5000 comments and you are the first person to say they used the sort options….thanks for checking out my page and thanks for the comment and the compliment.

  5. I can visualize a Cogerson and FloraBreenRobison TV show rating movies, similar to ‘ebert presents at the movies’, I know I’d watch.

Your new Avatar fooled me Cogerson, I missed this scanning pictures – who needs reading instructions?

This is yet another incredible PAGE!

    1. Hey Mckbirdbks….that is an interesting idea for a show…thanks for that nice compliment. As for my new avatar….my wife and my mother hated my Conan picture that was my previous avatar….so I was only going to keep it for a little while….then it won a 2011 Hubbie Award for Best Avatar…so I felt I should keep it up awhile….but its time is finally over….but I like this new one….Woody is wearing a HubPage t-shirt and my daughter has her handy HubPage notebook. I appreciate your compliment on my hub as well.
