Want to know the best Best Picture Oscar Winners? How about the worst Best Picture Oscar Winners? Curious about Best Picture Oscar Winners’ box office grosses or which Best Picture Oscar Winners picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Best Picture Oscar Winners got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which one got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information.
My first experience with the Oscars® was back in 1982 when I was 14. I had watched Raiders of the Lost Ark many times during the summer of 1981. And I was convinced it was the best movie ever to be filmed. When the Oscar® nominations came out I was so happy that Raiders received 8 nominations and I was convinced that Steven Spielberg would win Best Director and Raiders won would Best Picture. The night of the Oscar® show, I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark win 4 minor Oscars® and 1 special Oscar® for sound.
After being sent to bed, I quietly turned on my black and white television that was in my room. I watched the last part of the show when they give out the major awards with the volume almost on mute. Finally they got to Best Director…and the winner was…..Warren Beatty ????? for Reds….I was stunned, but that was nothing compared to when they called Chariots of Fire for Best Picture of the Year. I could not believe they did not call out Raiders….I was convinced there most have been a mistake. No mistake, as the producers of Chariots of Fire got their Oscars®. Spielberg applauded the win, while I turned off the television and though how unfair life is sometimes. Not saying I am still bitter about the loss, but I still refuse to acknowledge Chariots of Fire as Best Picture of 1981. So there will be no Oscar® winner for the 1981 year on the tables.
Best Picture Oscar Winning Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In The Table Below
The really cool thing about ther table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort Best Picture Oscar Winners by star of the movie
- Sort Best Picture Oscar Winners by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
- Sort Best Picture Oscar Winners by critic reviews and audiences voting. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Best Picture Oscar Winners received.
- Sort Best Picture Oscar Winners by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score. The ceiling to earn points for box office is $200 million…once a movie passes that mark it stops earning points in that category.
- You can use the search button to sort by year

Hi Bruce, I tivo’d this years Oscars and finally whizzed thru them last night. Horrible is the word. Has to be the worst Oscars ever. Plus the winners were allowed to drone on endlessly. The In Memorium section was a travesty, was it on fast forward? Best award win was Anthony Hopkins’ Best Actor, the oldest Best Actor so far, and for a film I’m never going to watch.
STEVE
Two thumbs-up from me for your own comments. However how you distinguish between this year’s and all the other years’ proceedings beats me: to me they have for a long time all been uniformly **** to express myself obliquely like the Work Horse’s newfound admirer.
However we all have our favourites and I am pleased for Sir Tony I regard Hopkins’ win as being as much another statue for Brando as is for Sir Anthony. The latter is on record as citing Brando as his own influence and I recall him saying to an interviewer on TV a couple of decades
“Every now and again one of these very special people like Brando suddenly appears among us and I ask myself “Where do they come from ? and there seems no answer. I watched The Young Lions recently and even with a little tilt of the head Brando managed to look like some kind of God sent among mortals.”
Now Sir Tony joins his idol in being among the handful of thespians who have gotten more that one Best Actor Oscar
Bruce, Bob, Flora, anyone who might be reading. I thought this story from Hollywood Reporter was interesting.
Which were the biggest Best Picture upsets at the Academy Awards?

Great link Steve. Thanks for sharing it.
And now for something different. Here are all the best Oscar winners and the people from them that are on the December 15, 2018 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. The years are not entirely in order and some years are the way the IMDB lists them. There are 2 films from the last 12 years that don’t have representation on the list and one from 1929 that does. The most people on the list from 1 film is 20 for Gandhi (1982). They are listed going backwards in time.

Hey Dan. Very very cool. And perfect timing as well. I just got through updating all the new Oscar stats from yesterday. Lots of great movies and great stars on this list. I thought Around The World In 80 Days would have had even more names. I need to see One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest again….it has been years since I saw it….but I did not remember Anjelica Huston being in that movie….I imagine now she pops off the screen. All those legendary older Brits filled up the Gandhi part. Seen that one two times….not thinking I will be seeing it a third time any time soon. Very interesting…I liked the new way to look at the list. Thanks for putting it all together.
dan, great info. thanks. I noticed Hilary swank(2 best actress Oscar wins) and orlando bloom did not make the list. amazing how many connected thespians there are. good to see james stewart hanging in at 909.
thanks Dan, awesome.
I was happy with the results. A monster movie winning Best Picture of the year doesn’t happen often. And good to see Gary Oldman finally win an Oscar.
Reading the news reports looks like the biggest snub wasn’t Spielberg’s The Post but the absence of Dorothy Malone in the Memoriam section of the show. Doesn’t make sense leaving her out considering some of the really obscure technicians that were mentioned in the video. Adam West was also missing but that can be forgiven since he was really a TV star, but Dorothy Malone? tsk tsk
Get ready to add The Shape of Water to the list. Great movie.
