Want to know the best Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners?  How about the worst Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners?  Curious about Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners box office grosses or which Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which one got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place because we have all of that information.

Drivel Part: (That is what my wife calls this part of the page).  A few years ago, we wrote three movie pages on Oscar winners: Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress.  Our goal was to write six different pages…but we got sidetracked. Well with it being “Movie Award Season”, we figured it was time finish off the last three Oscar winning pages we wanted to write.   I have seen 79 of the 81 movies listed in the table.  The only movie to escape me so far is 1936’s Anthony Adverse.

Since 1936, there have been 85 Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners. This page will rank all Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners from Best to Worst in five different sortable columns of information.  If you use the sort and search buttons the massive table becomes very interactive.

shelley and dianne
Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters are the only actresses in the history of people to win 2 Best Supporting Actress Oscars

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners Can Be Ranked 5 Ways In The Table Below

The really cool thing about ther table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort by the winners
  • Sort Best Supporting Actress Winners by actual domestic box office grosses
  • Sort Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners by critic reviews and audiences voting.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar nominations and how many Oscar® wins each movie won
  • Sort Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winners by Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.  The ceiling to earn points for box office is $200 million…once a movie passes that mark it stops earning points in that category.

One of my favorite Best Supporting Actress Oscar winning roles is Maggie Smith in California Suite...Michael Caine being in the movie has nothing to do with it.

  1. I like it. Although I must admit I am not aware of any of the movies you listed for the next winner. Interesting website.

    1. Hey Anonymous….thanks for stopping by. I am sure some of those 5 contenders will be hitting your radar screen soon.

  2. Another big Oscar page, nice work Bruce. A few actresses here I’m not that familiar with.
Here comes the inevitable criticism – Hattie McDaniels at no.1 on the moviescore? Above the likes of Meryl Streep and Jessica Lange, ooh thats asking for trouble. This is where the Moviescore goes awry, she appeared in one very successful film and won an Academy Award does that automatically make her the highest rated supporting actress in film history? and lets be honest here Hattie played exactly the same kind of role in a number of other Hollywood films of the time including They Died With Their Boots On. I think the Moviescore would work better and more fairly if it ranked ‘multiple Oscar winning’ actresses above the single wins. Other than that another fascinating look at Oscar. Voted Up.

    1. Hey Steve…..as always thanks for stopping by and commenting.
      1. Our UMR score is a statistical equation. Hattie McDaniel won her Oscar in our 7th highest rated film in our database. Meryl Streep got her Oscar for our 18th highest rated movie….Kramer vs Kramer. I knew before doing this page that McDaniel was going to get the Top Spot.
      2. I agree with you 100% that McDaniel played the same role the same way she had done before and after GWTW.
      3. Historical McDaniel’s win was huge. She was the first African American to win an Oscar. Growing up that used to be a fact that was always brought up.
      4. McDaniel’s win was in one of the biggest spectacles of all-time….the biggest box office hit of all-time…and in one of the most beloved movies of all-time….that goes along way.
      5. I bet a month ago…..if you got stopped in the streets of London….and they said we will give you a million pounds if you can name 5 Best Supporting Actress Winners….Hattie McDaniel would be one of the first names you came up with….now you can quickly pull up this page and get your million pounds…lol.
      6. If I ranked only the multiple winners….the list would be short…..it would only have Dianne Wiest and Shelly Winters. This list is not saying Hattie McDaniel is the greatest supporting actress ever……it is simply saying that her win in GWTW was one of the greatest Best Supporting Actress Oscar wins ever….there are only 79 of them.
      7. Where is the tally count? I am at 78…and this time I am sure….no over inflation this time around.
      8. So which do you think would be better….to keep the co-stars….or separate the year the movie was made….so you can sort the movies by year?

That was fun….it has been a longtime since you challenged my movie score so hard….you comments and criticism are greatly appreciated…..P.S. If I had used the critic audience rating as the default position then Eva Marie Saint would have been sitting in the Top Spot….would that have been better?

      1. A bit of criticism keeps you on your toes Bruce. What sometimes messes things up on the moviescore is the combination of box office with critical success, the two don’t always gel. Maybe remove box office grosses and just keep the awards and critics? But that might get boring for some people. Oh well, the moviescore is it’s own thing, on the plus side it does give us something to talk about. 🙂
I have seen 48 of the 79 films listed, you have thrashed me again. I might have to hand in my movie buff badge.
P.s if Eva Marie Saint was at the top I might have been kinder in my assessment of the moviescore, but only because I find her more attractive (oh thats so shallow Steve). 🙂

        1. Hey Steve….I agree criticism keeps you on your toes. Well the way this table is set up….you can ignore the UMR score and sort by reviews. But Hattie’s Gone With The Wind is so stout…the worst you get her ranked is 4th in critic audience rating and 23rd in actual box office. 48 is good….but I think Flora is going to take 2nd place. As for your movie buff badge…we have decided to renew your membership…..but you are getting close to having it revoked…lol. Shallow Steve? The sequel to Shallow Hal? Thanks for coming back to this page…it is always greatly appreciated.

  3. Just spent about a hour looking at you Academy Award pages. Good stuff with lots of information. This could be a book!

    1. Hey Walter…..thanks for the great compliments. Glad to know that my Oscar pages kept up interested for so long. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Hey Sue….thanks for stopping by. Sorry you do not like my rankings….but…..the beauty of this page is that you can rank the movies anyway you want. A list is just good way to start a discussion. I would be real curious to know which movies seem out of whack in my rankings?

  4. And the comment box appears. I have to admit I am in love with Jennifer Connelly. So I am happy as hell that she made the Top 5. A Beautiful Mind is a good movie with great performances from Jen and Russell Crowe. I really like this Oscar look.

    1. Hey Timlin. Glad you like the ranking of Jennifer Connelly in A Beautiful Mind. We I remember being very happy when Ron Howard finally got his Oscar love for that movie. Connelly & Crowe are awesome in the movie. Thanks for the comment.
